Friends, Or Foes?

Kyo's POV:

"When I get my hands on him..." I growled as I ran down the hallway in a rush, knocking some people over. Like I cared. My search ended as I spotted the person I was looking for in one of the empty classrooms.

"Haru.."

I glared deeply at the idiot before me.

Haru was staring out the window. He turned his head at me when he heard his name being called out. "Kyo... You look mad." He said, his eyes blinking a few times. I clenched my fist tightly at his attitude.

"Of course I look mad! I am mad!" I yelled out as I walked up to him. "Why?" I frowned at his question. "What do you mean, why?!" "Why are you mad? Did Yuki and you got into another fight? Did you lose? Is that why you're mad?" He retorted.

I did my best to ignore his words and focused on the problem at hand. I calmed down, surprising myself at the same time.

"Could you explain to me why your acting like a complete jerk to the new girl? Or didn't you notice it yourself." I began to say in a serious tone. Haru didn't respond. He just kept staring at me with those grey eyes of his.

"Oi... Are you going to answer or what?" I spat out while crossing my arms. He still didn't say anything.

"You’re starting to piss me off again..." I grumbled as I still did my best not to freak out on him. "I have no reason whatsoever to be nice to her." Haru answered as he stared out of the window again.

I grabbed a chair, turned it around and sat down with my arms on the back of the chair.

"That's not good enough." I spoke up with a sigh. "This isn't like you. Why are you suddenly so aware of the people around you? You never cared about the curse in the first place. You did whatever you wanted to do, whenever you wanted to do it. So what gives?"

Haru looked up at me as he ran his fingers through his hair, followed by a deep sigh. "It's complicated. I can tell she's going to get close to me. So I have to scare her away while I still have the chance." He replied in a soft tone.

"If she finds out about the curse, Akito will surely hurt her. It's for her own good to stay away." He retorted as Haru closed his eyes.

"You know what happened to Rin. I just want to avoid it all from happening again." I scratched the back of my head. "I don't get you." I began to say.

"It doesn't matter whether your cursed or not. You shouldn't treat her the way that you do. No matter what you do. She'll still get hurt in the progress." I stood up and placed my hand on his shoulder.

"Think about it. By ignoring her, you’re not making the problem go away. Your just doing what you want to avoid... Hurting her in the progress." I piped up.

"Forget about the past. You can't keep blaming yourself like this. What happened to Rin was terrible. I know that much. Just don't make this new girl feel depressed just like her. It's the least you can do, right?" Haru faced me directly. His eyes seemed to soften up at my statement.

"I think you need to apologize to her. Let her know that you're an idiot. She'll understand somehow." I walked away with a slight wave in his direction and closed the door behind me.

"He really is an idiot." I muttered out with a yawn to follow.

You're POV:

Tohru, Yuki, Uotani, Momiji and a girl I've never seen before made their way up to me. I smiled at them, showing them that I'm alright. "Hey guys. What did I miss?" "N-nothing really." Tohru stuttered out.

"What happened with you? Did you trip or something?" Uotani asked me. I guess she saw the band-aid on my knee.

"I just had some trouble with my bike. But it's all taken care of." I replied with another smile. "Does it hurt?" Momiji looked up at me as he held onto his lollypop. He seemed a little worried, in which my expression softened up.

"Not as much as my ankle. I managed to injure it on my way here. Luckily, I met a doctor who fixed it right up. So I'm fine now."

"That's good to hear!" Momiji cheered happily. "Haru-chan. This is my good friend Hanajima Saki. She didn't attend school yesterday." Tohru spoke up as she pointed to her black-haired friend.

"Nice to meet you... I hope we can be the best of friends." She replied with a slight nod. "Nice to meet you too Hanajima!" I bowed deeply, but regretted the fact that I did so.

My ankle was beginning to hurt again. Didn't that doctor guy say not to put any pressure on my foot? Oh well.

"Owww..."

Yuki helped me up, in which I thanked him. "Do you want to sit down?" He asked me. "I'm fine. It doesn't hurt that much anymore." They didn't seem to believe me. But that doesn't matter.

I looked around in a daze, not seeing Hatsuharu in the area. My happy mood dropped dramatically as I realized this.

Hatsuharu's words kept on ecoing in my head for some reason.

"I'm not weak." I mumbled out softly. "Did Haru say that to you?" Yuki asked me. I just sighed deeply as I faced him. "Yuki. Your close to him, right?" He frowned at me, but answered anyway.

"Well.. Yeah. But wh-" "I want to know some things about him!" He couldn't finish his sentence as I got into his face and poked him with my index-finger on his chest.

"What does he like? What does he hate? What are his biggest fears? What kind of brand does he prefer? What kind of music does he listen to? Stuff like that." I blurted out.

Yuki seemed a little taken aback by my actions. Tohru, Uotani and Hanajima just stared at me in a daze. Momiji seemed amused by all this.

"Come on! You know him right? Right?!"

"C-calm down Tanaka-san. I don't know him that well." Yuki retorted with his hands raised as if I was arresting him or something.

"Come on! I must have done something wrong to make Hatsuharu act like this. So It's my job not to make any more mistakes." I piped up. Yuki backed away from me, making me hold onto his arm tightly.

"Tell me already!"

"Ah! Haru-chan! You shouldn't do that! Yuki-kun might..." I looked up at her in confusion. "He might what?" I asked her. All eyes were on Tohru.

"Umm.. Well.. I was going to say that it's not safe. Yuki-kun has a.. A very contagious disease. You might get sick if you keep clinging onto him like that."

I took a few steps back, as did Hanajima and Uotani. Momiji just stifled his laughter. I looked up at Yuki to see him slap himself in the face at Tohru's answer.

"Are you sure? If it's true. How come Kyo's not sick. Yuki and Kyo get into a lot of fights, right?"

"They sure do." Uotani retorted with a smirk. "The two of them resemble Tom and Jerry." Hanajima spoke up in a mere whisper. I backed away from Yuki, not wanting to take any chances.

My mood dropped dramatically as I realized that there was nothing I could do to help Hatsuharu.

"Heitern Sie auf Haruhi! Lassen Sie albernen Haru zu Ihnen nicht kommen!" (Cheer up Haruhi! Don't let silly Haru get to you!) I nodded softly at Momiji in response.

"Thanks Momiji. Even though I hardly understood a word you said just now." I piped up as I messed up his blonde hair with my hand.

Just then, Kyo came walking towards us, along with Hatsuharu by his side. Hatsuharu seemed to avoid eye-contact with me, making me stare at the floor with my bangs covering my eyes.

"Kyo-kun! What a surprise! And you brought Hatsuharu-san along with you!" Tohru retorted happily. "Of course I did. I can't let him walk around on his own. Accidents might happen. He could turn black or somethin'." Kyo spoke up without sharing any interest in the situation.

"Even though you’re the one that causes for him to change, stupid cat..." Yuki muttered out with a sigh. "I heard that!!" "I planned for you to hear it, moron." Tohru stood between them before they got physical.

"Forget it!" Kyo snarled as he crossed his arms and turned his attention to Hatsuharu.

"What are you waiting for? Are you going to apologize for your stupid behavior or what?" He demanded. Upon hearing that, I looked up again with a dazed expression on my face.

Kyo pushed Hatsuharu in my direction until he faced me properly, even though he still couldn't look me in the eye.

"I'm not gonna recite the words for you to say, so you'd better be serious about this." Kyo muttered out for Hatsuharu to hear. He stood there, looking all uncomfortable under my gaze.

"Well. I think it's time for all of us to go to the cafeteria. Or else there won't be anything good left for us." Yuki spoke up as he smiled at everyone. (Exept Kyo… Poor Kyo.)

"Yes. That sounds like a good thing to do." Tohru followed Yuki closely as Uotani and Hanajima trailed behind her.

"I'm gonna stay and see how things work out!" Momiji jumped happily, until Kyo dragged him along on his ear. "You will do no such thing, ya little brat!" "It hurts! It hurts!" Momiji complained.

After a minute or so, the hallway was empty. Not a sound could be heard other than Hatsuharu's soft breathing. The silence was driving me crazy! I had to say something.

"So... How are you doing?"

Anything else other than that, perhaps? I'm such an idiot. Hatsuharu was staring at me as if I grew another head.

"I'm... Fine. I guess." He spoke up in a daze. "Listen. I want to apologize for the way I was acting before. I had no right to treat you like I did." I nodded softly, being glad that he was actually talking to me.

"Well. I accept your apology, on one condition." I spoke up with my index-finger in the air.

"What was it that made you act like that? Did I do something wrong? If I know what it is, I can change." I asked him softly. The look on his face softened up as he sighed dramatically.

"It's just that? I thought that you were going to give me a difficult task. Like making your homework or something." I frowned at his words.

"I would never ask that. Just answer my question." I said. Hatsuharu stuck his hands in his pockets and continued to stare me down. "It has something to do with my past. Back then, I experienced something that I never wanted to face again. I can't say anything else about it."

At that moment, I saw Hatsuharu's eyes clouding over in sadness. His hands were clenched into fists as he frowned deeply. I felt a little sad myself for seeing him like this.

Guess I should stop asking him any questions. I don't want to open his wounds even more. I don't want to soil his heart by doing so.

"I understand... Just don't make me feel left out and miserable like that ever again. Even though I know you won't. You waited for me at that tree, so you’re a nice person." I smiled brightly at him.

Hatsuharu seemed a little taken aback by my answer. I held out my hand for him to shake.

"Friends?"

Was the only thing I could say at the moment. This time, Hatsuharu surprised me as he dismissed my hand and placed his own on either side of my face. He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against mine.

"Friends..." He chuckled out softly as he closed his eyes. It was like he was enjoying the moment in full bliss. I know I was. My cheeks burned up and my feet were frozen to the ground.

After what seemed like hours (But were only a few measly seconds.) he released me and backed off a little. I still found it hard to breathe.

"You okay?" He asked me as he took a closer look at my face. "J'ai oublié.. quelque chose. Je vais aller faire maintenant." (I forgot.. something. I'll go and get it right now.)

I started to blabber about in French. Hatsuharu just raised an eyebrow in curiosity, seeing that he didn't understood a word I said.

I walked ahead of him and collided against a locker in embarrassment. "Je suis bien! D'une façon..." (I'm okay! Somehow..) Again, I spoke to him in French.

"Oi Haru-tan. Look out for tha-" He began to say to me. But it was too late as a loud crash occurred. I collided against the wall this time.

"Je suis très bien. Je suis très bien." (I'm fine. I'm fine.) I blurred out as I disappeared around the corner. Hatsuharu seemed to smile softly as he shook his head. "Maybe I need to learn the French language…"

------

After Hatsuharu and I made up, I felt like nothing could bring me down. Until I got home, that is. "Haruhi, ma petit abeille! What happened to you?!" Mom embraced me tightly, not giving my lungs enough space to do their job.

"Mom. Mom. I can't breathe." She released me and dragged me over to the couch. Etoile, my loving Dalmatian dog, jumped up and placed herself next to me. "Let's see that foot of yours." She began to say as Mom pulled of my sock.

"M-mom! I'm fine. I sprained my ankle, but it's been taken care of." I complained. I know that Mom means well, but this is just too much.

"You just sprained your ankle?"

"Yes. But I'm fine now." I retorted with a soft smile. Etoile seemed to worry even more. I just patted her on the head and gave her extra attention. "Don't worry so much Etoile. Your beautiful spots will turn grey." I spoke up as she licked my hands.

"See Mom? Etoile understands me. Mom... Mom?"

I looked around to see her sitting in the couch with the remote in her hand, just zapping away. "Mom!" "Yes dear?" She replied cheerfully. "It wouldn't hurt if you were a little bit concerned about my health. You are my mother after all." I complained to her.

"That's true. But my favorite soap is starting right now. I already missed the part where Micheal dies in the hospital. Stephanie must be crushed. And right after she found out she's carrying twins. And both Kevin and Micheal are the fathers. Fate can be so cruel, I tell you." She replied blankly.

I just crashed down on the floor anime style. I forgot that Mom’s duties as a true mother ceases to exist when her favorite soap is on.

"Never mind. At least my friends were worried... Right, Etoile?" She yawned slightly and rolled up in a comfortable position, completely ignoring me."I miss them already."

Hatsuharu's POV:

The day has finally ended. I threw my backpack in the corner of my room and plopped down on my bed with a sigh to follow. Just when I thought that I was alone, the door creaked open.

I didn't bother to look up and just lied there. The sounds of footsteps could be heard, stopping before me. "Looks like you had a tiring day, Haru." I looked up to see Hatori standing there. I crashed back down onto my bed after that.

"I guess so."

Hatori shook his head at my reply. He was just about to leave, when I sat up straight and faced him. "Hatori..." He turned around to look at me.

"What is it?" He asked me. "I just... Wanted to thank you properly." I mumbled out, completely catching him off guard.

"For what?"

"For helping the girl with the bike." Hatori just sighed at me. "Looks like you saw right through me. Think nothing of it. It was worth the trouble." He retorted as he walked off and closed the door behind him. I looked up at the ceiling again in silence as I laid on my back.

"French people are so weird."
