Chapter 56: An Idea

Eevie

I was glad we were able to get back to the human realm relatively quickly, but I was also a little disappointed I hadn’t been able to see Alistair at all. I still saw him at training, but he always had to get back right after so that no one would suspect where he was actually going. It was funny how I had thought bonding with a human would be fine because there was nothing about my life I would miss. But I was wrong. I missed Alistair and his family. I missed being able to be alone. I missed doing whatever I wanted when I wanted.

Shaking my head, I reminded myself that I really liked being with Elena and protecting her and going to school and living a normal human life. I didn’t regret my decision whatsoever. It was the best choice for me, and if I had to, I’d do it all over again. However, that didn’t stop me from daydreaming of all the things I had taken for granted before. What I wouldn’t give to be able to hang out with Nori for an entire day without demons interfering, without Noel and Elena in our heads. I wanted it to just be Nori and me.

Making the mistake of sighing, Elena heard me and asked what was wrong.

But how could I tell her I was growing restless being cooped up inside for so long. How did I tell her it was in my very nature to be reckless and a thrill seeker. We hadn’t fought a demon in a while, I needed the adrenaline. But I knew we had to be careful so as to not arouse the suspicions of the exorcists. Nothing, just tired, I lied. There was no point in burdening Elena with my wayward thoughts.

I made myself focus on what the teacher was saying in one of her biology classes, it was an interesting chapter, and I knew I needed to pay attention in order to help her get her homework done at a reasonable time. With fewer demons lately, she had been able to devote more time to studying and homework, but she still pushed herself a little far, and I wanted to help lessen the load a little. She needed to train, but if how late she was staying up to finish all of her reading assignments and making flashcards was any indication, we would probably need to cut back a little. She’d be useless in a fight if she was tired.

After classes, we headed to the commons to check her mail and to grab a bite to eat. Along the way, she called her grandma to fill her in on the last couple days. And I listened idly while Elena talked about her classes and some of the friends she was making. Her grandma asked about Alexis and Noel, and Elena answered all of her questions as best she could. We reached the commons, and Elena loitered near a bulletin board before heading up. She wanted to finish talking to her grandma while she could still hear her before heading up to where all the noise would be.

While Elena spoke on the phone, I was looking over the bulletin board and noticed a flyer for a Halloween party that was coming up soon. I waited patiently for Elena to hang up the phone, and as she did, she started heading towards the cafeteria. Wait wait! Go back to the bulletin board.

Elena did as I was asked What am I looking for? She asked looking at all of the different flyers advertising tutors, evening class schedules, a sports schedule, and the times for the midterm break.

The Halloween party.

I’m not really into the whole dressing up thing on Halloween, Elena told me.

But I want to go, I replied. Halloween is a time when people dress up. What a better way for me to fit in then this night where I don’t have to hide who I am? I just have to tell people I’m in costume. No one will know it’s not actually a costume.

I don’t know, Elena trailed off uncertain.

Run it by Noel and Nori. I want Nori to go with me.

But what about the exorcists? Do you really think it’s a good idea to be out in public like that?

They wouldn’t do anything in a crowd. I knew my plan was reckless and not very safe. But I so desperately wanted to be able to run free and do whatever I wanted for one night, I was willing to do anything. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I also really wanted the exorcists to try something. I wanted to compare my power with theirs to really see what we were up against. But I couldn’t tell Elena that. She would never go for it, and neither would the boys. But I figured I’d deal with the situation if it arose at the party if I could only talk everyone into being okay with it.

Elena

“You’ll never guess what Eevie wants to do,” I told Noel in place of a proper greeting. I set my tray of food on the table and slid into the chair across from him. When Noel just stared at me waiting for the answer right away, I continued, “She wants to attend the Halloween party that the school is hosting in a couple of weeks. She saw a flyer downstairs and hasn’t dropped the issue since.”

You’re presenting the idea all wrong, Eevie told me. You need to make it sound like a good idea!

But I don’t think it is! I retorted, and I felt Eevie push to mentally switch with me, which I allowed her to do in a huff.

She leaned across the table, pushing the tray off to the side so that she could rest my boobs on the top of the table and give Noel a clear view of my cleavage. I watched as his eyes dipped down, and I could sense Eevie relished when his face started turning red. What dirty thoughts is he having, Eevie wondered, which caused me to turn red.

What did you expect showing him my cleavage like that? I exclaimed a little embarrassed. Noel thought it was me being so provocative.

I was just testing him. Life lesson number one: If you are a big chested woman, you can usually bend men to your will showing off a little skin. I didn’t question her; I knew she was speaking from experience. Eevie seemed like the kind of person who was hardly ever told no from the male population.

Noted, I replied. I didn’t think I’d ever be comfortable doing that to someone.

“What do you think?” Eevie asked Noel in a low, sultry voice that I never used, but which came out a lot more seductive than I ever knew I could sound.

Noel swallowed before looking back up into my eyes, “About what?” he cleared his throat and became intensely interested in the bowl of fruit on his tray.

“Letting Nori and Eevie go the Halloween party?” Eevie asked. Before he could argue, she held a hand up. “Think about it, everyone is going to be dressed up in costumes, and it’s the perfect explanation for Eevie and Nori’s unusual, demonic extremities. If anyone asks about anything, we can lie and say it’s all part of our costume.”

“You don’t think people will realize they don’t actually go to school here?” Noel asked.

“We would just need to figure out their major and year and then tell them we are opposite year and major. It’s a big school. No one can know everyone. And if worse comes to worse, Eevie can cast a spell to erase their memories. Easy peasy,” she explained.

“What about the exorcists?” he tried a different approach.

“I doubt they’ll try anything in a crowd. And Eevie can come up with an amulet we can each wear that will mask our demonic scent so no other demons or exorcists can sense that we are there.” I wondered if she really could. She hadn’t said anything about that before.

“Can we think about it?” Noel asked.

“Of course. But it seems Eevie is going to go no matter what, so it might be best for Nori to be there to keep her in line,” Eevie put in, hoping that would be all she needed to really reel him in.

Before Noel could reply, Austin and Alexa joined us, and Eevie gave me mental control again. They brought up the Halloween party, too, but I made it known I probably wasn’t going to show up, and Noel told them he wasn’t sure, yet. Halloween was when my grandma and I would give out candy to the kids, and I enjoyed our time together, so I never went to any of the parties. I had hoped to just stay in and watch scary movies with Noel. But I also didn’t want to keep Eevie from experiencing the party. It seemed she really was looking forward to doing it, and her and Nori rarely had time to themselves. If she could really make the amulets, I would be all for them going together.

It might even be fun to see how things play out.
