'I'm scared,' she thought. 'No, not scared, worried, or excited? Anxious? Yes, that's probably it.' Kisa Sohma looked back over her shoulder. There was her new Friend, Tohru Honda, and her cousins, Haru, Yuki, and Kyo. Kisa looked at Tohru, who smiled back encouragingly. "Have a good day at school, Kisa-chan!" she called.Kisa managed a small smile for her onee-chan. She remembered when she had first met Tohru.Kisa had run away from home and Haru had come to find her.
Kisa glanced at Haru. He gave her a smile, too. He had found her and brought her to Shigures house. Kisa's eyes watered as she remembered how she had bitten Tohru when they first met. She had only been trying to help.
Kisa would never forget what Tohru had told her mother that day in the garden. Her mother was tired, getting fed up. Tohru said "You know, it could be she just didn't know how to tell you. Or she was worried that she'd . . . disappoint you. Maybe she was afraid . . . and maybe . . . she didn't want anyone to know. She tried to hide it. She put on her bravest face . . . and she did her best to look brave in front of everyone. Still she knew. She knew she wasn't strong and the more she tried to hide it the more ashamed she felt. And the more she began to hate herself and the more she thought you would hate her too if you knew the truth. If you knew how cared she was to face the other kids. And maybe that's the reason she wouldn't say anything to you. The think that scared her most . . . is that her mother would reject her. That she would be hated by someone she loved."
Kisa had transformed again after that.she sat in the garden, naked, in front of Tohru and her mother. Tohru had given her something to wear and held her while she cried. The relief she felt was so strong. Kisa had wanted to ask Tohru about what she said. but what could she say? How do you know? What happened to you when you were my age? Were you picked on, too? But Kisa knew that those were the kind of questions that you just don't ask people.
Kisa had clung to Tohru for days after that. She didn't want to be alone, away from someone who understood her so well. Kyo had once called it annoying. She looked at him too now. He just stared at the ground. She knew that Kyo got frustrated easily . . . like when she couldn't answer Tohru's question "What do you want for dinner?" She had be unable to answer of course, on account of her words being locked away.
"Can't you even say what you want for dinner?" he said. "I know!" And Tohru pulled out a peice of paper with fortune ladders drawn on it. Much to Kyo's disapointment, they ate steamed leeks for dinner. Kisa liked leeks, Kyo hated them. He had Tohru make them any way, though. Kisa suspected that Kyo liked Tohru, in that special way.
Kyo looked up, she looked away, at Yuki. He seemed to be lost in his own world, too. He caught on quicker then Kyo, and looked up at Kisa. He gave her a small, almost sad, smile. She wasn't sure what it meant but she knew that he wanted her to be happy.
Kisa remembered one of her last days at Shigure's house. Haru had brought home a letter from her teacher.
Dear Kisa,
I hope that this finds you well and I hope that you are thinking of coming back to school. We all miss you very much and I know that you're classmates are anxiously awaiting your return. The rest of your teachers and I are here to help you in any way that we can, to welcome you back into the group with open arms. But more than anything, Kisa, it is my hope that you learn to feel good about yourself. I beleive that you will come to find that you have many good qualities. That's my wish for you. There is no way for a person who doesn't like themslef to be liked by others, is there?
"What is that supposed to mean?" Yuki had asked. " How are you supposed to find these good qualities if all you can find are things you don't like? I don't think you can, not like that. I think that what it takjes is for someone to say "I like you." "
Kisa had realized then that that was what Tohru had done for her. She had cried again then and her words were unlocked. "It's beautiful," Haru had said, as he pulled her close and gave her a hug, "It's been so long since we've heard your voice."
Kisa pulled her gaze to Haru again and found that his eyes had never left her. It made her feel safe . . . and loved. She decided to be brave . . . she would not give up this time.
She took a deep breath and entered the schol. Her stomach felt strange. Like there were strings pulling her stomach sso that it was becoming smaller, but the strings kept breaking. She stood a moment before the door. Again she remembered Yuki's words "It's okay to feel scared sometimes. We need to be afraid to face our fears. It makes us strong."
Note from the author . . .
This is my first fan fiction EVER so please don't be too hard on me . . . I'm hoping I'll get better in time. Also, I apologize for the not so imaginative title . . .
I know this isn't exactly accurate. There was only Haru, Momiji and Tohru when Kisa went back to school. I wanted to keep the people at Shigure's house in the story and this is what came out of it. I hope you liked it!! Please comment! I apoligize if it's horrible . . . and for spelling mistakes . . .
The other day was Halloween. I was walking to the bus stop at 7am and thinking about L. 'Today is his birthday' I thought. 'He'd be 29.' As I walked across the tiny town I live in, I remembered a peice of artwork I saw on TheO the night before.
The art was titled We Love You L! by WiNtErLeAf. It featured L with his eyes closed and a rose in the background. In small elegant font to his left was writen his birth and death date. I recalled what he had said the day he died. "The bells are ringing awfully loud today."
I sighed and continued down the road, nearly at the bus stop. Then I heard bells. Three soft, high pitched rings.I stopped and stared at the paavement beneath me, straining my ears for further sounds.
Nothing.
I glanced up the hill to the old stone church. It sat still and calm.
I shivered and continued walking, a strange panic within me.
'If I die today there's a good chance I'll be around my friends. My imagination carried on until i was almost sprinting down the road to the bus stop. I rounded the corner and stared into the dawn darkness that surrounded me. Two boys, both on skateboards, and a girl, watching.
I sighed. They were fine. I silently scolded myself for getting so carried away.
When I reached the bus stop I asked. "Did you guys hear bells a few minutes ago?"
They looked at me and shook their heads. "Nope, why?"
"I just thought I did." I shrugged.
*****
"Oh," I said. "It's midnight"
Two of my best girlfirends were sitting on the bed with me, munching on mini smarties and kit-kats. They glanced at the digital clock on my bedstand and nodded.
"Lets not go to sleep." they said it like it was actually a possibility.
I laughed."Ya, lets not" I said and grabbed an aero out of my friends candy bag.
Perhaps I really did hear bells, or maybe I just let my imagination get carried away. I dunno, it just kinda freaked me out and I thought it made a good short story as my first post.
