Part III: Past Tense with Verbs
Last lesson, we learned about verbs and how to conjugate them into the present tense. This lesson, we'll learn how to conjugate verbs into the past tense.
To conjugate a verb into its past tense form, you take the stem of the verb and add either 〜ました for the affirmative or 〜ませんでした for the negative.
Present Tense: 〜ます (Affirmative) 〜ません (Negative)
Past Tense: 〜ました 〜ませんでした
There is also affirmative and negative past forms for です. These are:
Present Tense: 〜です (Affirmative) 〜じゃありません (Negative)
Past Tense: 〜でした 〜じゃありませんでした
EX: ケイさんはエバンズビル大学の学生でした。
(Kei-san wa Ebanzubiru daigaku no gakusei deshita.)
Kei was a student at the University of Evansville.
それは日本人じゃありませんでした。
(Sore wa Nihonjin ja arimasen deshita.)
That was not a Japanese person.
昨日、私は何にも食べませんでした。
(Kinou, watashi wa nani ni mo tabemasen deshita.)
I didn't eat anything yesterday.
