Tale of the Browser War

A calm, clear sky envelops the city of New Delhi on the 8th of February, a sky that cannot be herald to a grim deathly day. But all was not ll right, for on the ground, the carcasses of several Browsers lay....

OK, OK, it's not that dramatic. But yesterday was an incredible day of browser-hunting, which resulted in a great triumph.

Inspired by Emmah's post, I thought of DLing the AOL Browser. But the DL was taking so long I canceled it, and went to download.com to check out some other browsers.

I sorta liked Maxthon, so I DLed that. Turns out it's an IE clone, notoriously unstable and moody. Well, that was goodbye to that.

Next I tried the Netscape Navigator. I really liked its interface, browsing and porting-until it alerted me that its support had ceased since 2008. With lots of heartbreak, I put it down.

Next I tried Google Chrome. I sorta liked this simple little browser, but its sheer simplicity became a bitch after a while. It didn't have adblocking, couldn't show any advanced features and was rudimentary in its design. But I liked it still (it's nearly crash-proof), so I kept it.

Next I went for Avant Browser. And what do you know? That browser is a CPU hog! It ate up all of my 1.33 gigs and wanted more! So that was the end of Avant.

Eventually I decided to go for the AOL browser again. I waited an hour to dl that, only to find--oh God--that it works only for AOL connections! I needed an AOL network to use it.

Well, that was the crunch time for me. I (dejectedly) went back to download.com, and looked for another browser. Then I stepped on to Orca Browser.

It was pure perfection! A magnificent little Firefox-based browser with low system footprint and a ton of features. I loved its design, its speed and safety. Bang! Just like that, I was in love with my browsers.

So now I have 4 browsers: Flock for my social networking, Firefox for my proxy, Orca as my default browser, and Chrome as my backup. I hope I can now walk into the sunset with these 4 in peaceful harmony.

Peace!
