Blaze chapter 2 (part 1)
It was a little over a month after Blaze left the coven that she decided to work as a private investigator, and about a year after she made that decision, that she got ‘the case’
She decided to work as a PI for no reason other than that she thought it would be fun. She took any case that was offered, the harder and more dangerous the better. But despite the large amount of work she got it wasn’t until ‘the case’ that she really found something she enjoyed.
‘The case’ was given to her anonymously one Saturday, her job was to protect a girl named Clo. She was given no more than an address, an order not to make her self know to Clo, and a promise of large amounts of money. It wasn’t much to go on, but then that was one of the main reasons she took the case.
It was a week after she’d first started following Clo that she had first been spotted. It was boredom that got her into trouble, which was no real surprise when you thought about it. Before then she had managed to stay in the shadows and remain unseen, but that often spent staying in one place for hours on end and Blaze had never been the patient type. So one morning she snuck closer to the house and stood outside one of the windows where she could see the kitchen reflected in one of the mirrors on the wall, yet remain just out of sight.
“Happy birthday.” Clo’s parents yelled as she came down the stairs. And Blaze watched as a wide smile spread across her face.
“Ya, Clo, now your officially a teenager.” He father said, giving her a warm hug, which was quickly followed by one from her mother.
“Your present’s are on the table I hope you like them.
Blaze watched as the thirteen year old girl approached the kitchen table whish was stacked high with presents.
“Thanks guys.” She said beaming, before sitting down a methodically ripping the paper of each of her present’s.
Blaze’s eyes lingered on her smile and sighed, remembering when she had spent her birthday with her father, still so young and innocent. She hoped Clo would be able to keep that innocence, where Blaze had long ago lost it.
Her melancholy led her to move her gaze to Clo’s parents and she was surprised to see a sadness on there faces as they watched there little girl open her present’s and Blaze wondered what they were hiding.
When Clo finished unwrapping her present’s she kissed her parents on the cheek and skipped up the stairs to get ready for school. Blaze contemplated staying and listening to what Clo’s parents had to say, but the happy girl was much more interesting to watch so she climbed up onto the ledge of Clo’s bedroom and watched.
A few seconds later Clo came skipping in and after grabbing some clothes from her dresser she went into her bathroom and shut the door. Blaze sat on the edge and waited, but after a few minutes her mind started to drift.
She wondered what Cole was doing at the moment, probably sleeping she thought. He was powerful enough to stay up past dawn, but he usually slept anyway. In the month or so since she had left the coven Blaze had contacted Cole a number of times, but the change in leadership had caused upheaval in the coven and he usually wasn’t able to talk for long. She considered contacting him via their mind link, but the distance between them had weakened the bond and it took more effort than it was worth.
She was so lost in thought that she didn’t notice Zee Zee until she landed on her shoulder.
“Great job at watching over the girl mistress.” She said sarcastically when Blaze jumped. “I’m sure nothing will get passed you.”
Blaze laughed. “I was thinking about Cole.” She said. “I guess he can distract me even when he’s not here.”
Zee Zee sighed. “You really spend less time thinking about that vampire mistress.” She said. “I know he was your friend but you’ve got a new life now and you need to focus your attention on that rather than the past.”
“He wasn’t just a friend.” Blaze said pointedly. “He was my best friend, he IS my best friend and just because he’s not here right now doesn’t mean he not part of my life!” Blaze almost yelled the last part, she was missing Cole more than she liked to think about. All the things she once took for granted had left her, and Zee Zee’s attitude wasn’t helping in the least.
Zee Zee opened her mouth to say something more, but froze when she looked through the window, before flying to hide behind Blaze,
‘What the…..?’ Blaze thought, looking up just in time to catch the eyes of Clo, who had just walked out of the bathroom. She cursed and as quickly as she could without falling, she ran along the ledge to the balcony of the room over.
“That was close.” She muttered to Zee Zee, who had, of course, followed her.
“Really mistress?.” Zee Zee replied sarcastic once again. “I wouldn’t have thought.”
Blaze rolled her eyes. “Will you stop that? It’s getting really annoying.”
“Fine. What do you think your doing getting this close anyway mistress? I thought you were deliberately told to keep a distance.”
“I was told not to be seen.” Blaze replied defensively. “Not to keep my distance.”
“When you’re the one in question they mean the same thing mistress.”
“Look do you have anything productive to say? ‘cause if not can you please be quiet?”
“Fine mistress, if you don’t want me here then I’ll leave.”
Blaze glared at her. “If that’s how you feel then go.”
Zee Zee looked at her, a hurt expression on her face. She opened her mouth to say something, than close it and flew off.
Blaze almost called out and apologized, but she didn’t. Zee Zee had to learn who was the boss and she was getting fed up with Zee Zee telling her to forget about Cole. Blaze sighed. Before now she had never argued with Zee Zee and she new it was probably her fault, but her new life wasn’t exactly what she had expected and it was starting to get to her.
‘Hopefully this case will distract me.’ she thought an turned her attention back to the house.
She watched the school bus drive past only a few seconds before Clo came out of the house. She watched as the girl run down the street a few metres before coming to a stop, she looked back at the house, but her parents had already left for work, so with a sigh she started walking
Blaze paused just long enough to cast a veil of unseeing over her self, it was a spell and it would make people less likely to see her. She followed Clo to school, staying in the shadows and trying not to be notic. It was a bright day and she enjoyed the walk. When she arrived at Clo’s school she felt happy and refreshed. She watched as Clo walked over to her friends, then frowned when one of them turned around and yelled at her.
She strained her ears and her vampire hearing allowed her to catch what they were saying.
“Clo, why don’t you just leave us alone! Nobody likes you. Why can’t you get that, the only reason we’ve been nice to so far is ‘cause your rich. But it’s not worth it anymore, you’re a spoiled little brat.” He pushed her to the ground. “Now piss off and leave us alone.”
“B…b…but, I thought. And… it’s.” She burst into tears but the other’s just laughed at her. “My birthday.” She finally finished when they were out of hearing. It took her a few minutes before she pulled herself to her feet and wiped the tears from her eyes.
Blaze stood in the shadows burning with rage. ‘That poor girl.’ She thought. ‘What could she have possibly done to deserve that?’ She considered going to teach the kids a lesson, but thought better of it. It’d probably end up making things worse.
Blaze watched as Clo’s day got progressively more horrible. Clo must have still been upset about that morning, because she failed every single test she had that day. AN when the final bell rang, she found that her ‘friends’ had hidden her bag, so she missed the bus again.
Blaze watched from the shadows as the day unfolded and couldn’t help but feel a huge amount of sympathy toward the girl. She found that she could relate to Clo’s predicament, it reminded her of time in her child hood. Back in the demon realm.
It was only around lunch time that Blaze realized that Zee Zee hadn’t come back yet. Almost as soon as the thought entered her head, she started to worry. Sure her and Zee Zee had had the occasional fight, but she had always come back after a few hours. The fact that she was still gone showed a lot about her attitude toward Blaze’s behaviour. Blaze considered going to look for her, but she had been assigned to watch Clo, and she knew the sprite would come back eventually.
When she followed Clo home blaze was so tempted to go over and comfort the poor girl, but she knew better. So she watched Clo walk home, no doubt feeling completely alone in the world.
When Clo got home, Blaze watched her walk in and dump her school bag in the hall, but when the door shut, she was forced to go back to her position at the kitchen window.
“Hi honey.” Clo’s mum said looking worried.
“What’s wrong mum.”
“Clo, I hate to dump this on you, but I’m gonna make it short and sweet. We’re broke. We’re moving to an apartment. I’m sorry, baby, things are gonna be ok.” He dad replied.
Clo looked at him in disbelief, but she could see the truth in his eyes. She opened her mouth to say something, but the tears that she had been holding back for most of the day spilled out of her eyes and she run up the stairs crying.
*(Monster by disturbed)
Blaze climbed up onto the ledge again, making sure to stay out of sight this time. Clo came running up the stairs and threw herself onto her bed, scattering soft toys everywhere. She grab a particularly warn teddy and buried her face in it’s fur, sobbing loudly. “Why now Ted?” she asked the toy. “Why now? It’s my b..b…birthday.” She hugged the toy to her and cried until she fell asleep.
Blaze watched the scene play out from her spot at the window and couldn’t help the few tears that ran down her own cheeks. How could this be the same girl who had been so happy that morning? It didn’t seem fair.
She stayed at the window till the early hours of the morning, when Zee Zee finally showed up.
“What’s wrong mistress?” She asked when she saw the sadness on Blaze’s face.
Blaze turned to look at Zee Zee “It’s nothing.” she replied. “I’m glad your back.”
“I’m sorry for what I said earlier mistress.” Zee Zee said. “It was mean and I take it back.”
“I’m sorry too Zee.”
