At first Blaze had only meant to stay for a few months, but those months soon turned into more months, and before she new it she had been there for almost four years. The time passed quickly and she enjoyed being with the coven while not being part of it. Because no matter how many times Cole offered, she still refused to actually rejoin the coven. She liked her freedom too much for that.
It was an ordinary night when news of the first attack reached Blaze, Cole and Zee Zee. They had been watching horror movies, when a young vamp named Charles came bursting through the door. “Master.” He yelled. “There’s been an attack outside.” He gasped for breath, while everyone stared at him. “It was a group of hunnters, they were trying to get in. Amy tried to stop them, but she wasn’t strong enough.” Tears wet Charles’s eyes. “You have to help her master, she’s really badly hurt.”
“Take me to her.” Cole said jumping to his feet. “Blaze you go outside and see if you can track the hunnters.” Without hesitating Cole left, led by Charles to try to save Amy.
“I guess we’d better go outside then.” Blaze said to Zee Zee as she turned the TV off.
“Yes mistress.”
The two of them left the room and walked through the coven house to the front entry. Blaze could smell the blood from half way down the hallway, but it didn’t phase her. She had seen enough blood in her life to ignore it. She walked forward and gazed at the street with cold efficiency. There was blood everywhere, most of it Amy’s.
The first thought that came into Blaze’s head was that they’d have to get someone to come clean up soon. The walls were stained dark red and the ground was covered in slowly clotting blood. Taking a step away from the entry, Blaze took a deep breath through her nose and tried to pick up any other scents.
The most overwhelming was the smell of Amy’s blood, but under that was the blood of the hunnters who had been injured. Blaze could pick up the distinct smell of the blood of three different hunnters, as well a surface scent of at least two more. Breathing deeply she stored the scents in her head, but then she noticed something. One of the scents was familiar, it took her a few moments to recognise it as the same scent that had been at Clo’s apartment four years ago, when they were murdered.
“This is the same blood from Clo’s parent’s murder.” Blaze said to Zee Zee. “Why is a hunnter from the other side of the world here in Rewer city?”
The last bit was addressed more at herself than Zee Zee but Zee Zee answered anyway. “I don’t know mistress. But that’s hardly important at the moment. Cole asked you to track these hunnters if you could and that seems like a good course of action to me.”
Blaze frowned, but figured that Zee Zee was right. “Fine then. Let’s go.” She took another breath and turned in the direction the hunnter scent was strongest. Making sure she didn’t step in any of the blood pools, she made her way there and closed her eyes.
Blaze’s senses had already been heightened from her demon blood and becoming a vampire had increased this by nearly ten fold. She dipped her finger tips in one of the blood pools at her feet, slowly she raised her fingers to her lips and licked the blood off them. It was one of the hunnters blood and while it wouldn‘t tell her much more than she had already figured out, it would form a temporary bond that may prove useful later. With her eyes still closed she turned all her attention to her sense of smell and with one breath she could start to put the events that had transpired in order.
The hunnters had come from both ends of the street and across the rooftop of the opposite building, Amy hadn’t stood a chance, the fight had been short and brutal. If Charles hadn’t interrupted when he did Blaze had no doubt that Amy would already be dead. All the hunnters had left in the same direction when they were interrupted and Blaze could easily see the path they had taken. She too a few more seconds to let her mental map sink in before opening her eyes and starting forward.
“Aren’t you going to let Cole know where your going mistress?” Zee Zee Asked as she flew after Blaze.
“No. He told me to follow them, and anyway, he’s probably busy with Amy right now.” Blaze said as she continued forward. “Catching these hunnters is much more important.”
After a while Blaze stopped and cast a concealment spell over herself and Zee Zee.
“Why did you do that mistress.”
“The hunnters were moving very fast, if I don’t catch up with them soon they might be able to escape.” Blaze smiled. “Now I can run.”
At her last words, Zee Zee quickly grabbed hold of the collar of Blaze’s jacket and held on tight, she knew how fast Blaze could run. With a laugh completely unbefitting to the situation, Blaze started running.
After little more than a minute Blaze was moving so fast that the walls surrounding her were a blur of colour. She laughed under her breath, it had been far too long since she had done anything like this and she missed it more than she realized. After ten minutes of running, she reached the building that the hunnters had retreated to.
She stoped just out of sight of it and took a few minutes to catch her breath and enjoy the refreshing rush she had from her run.
“What are you going to do now mistress?” Zee Zee asked.
“Watch.” Blaze replied. “There was obviously some reason for their attack. Even hunnters aren’t stupid enough to attack a coven house without reason and if we kill them without finding that reason out, we’ll be doing more harm than good.” She sighed. “And anyway. Don’t you think this has all been a bit easy? I mean look at how easy it was to find them.”
“They were surprised mistress.” Zee Zee answered.
“Were they? You don’t really think they would attack a coven house and expect no resistance?”
“I guess not mistress.”
“Exactly. So we have to figure out exactly what is going on, before we act. And I think it might be best if you back to Cole for the moment. I’m perfectly capable of dealing with this myself and someone needs to tell him what’s going on.”
“But mistress I want to stay and help you. What if you get hurt?”
“If they’re strong enough to hurt me then I don’t think you’ll be of much help Zee. Trust me, this is the best for all of us.”
“Fine then mistress. Take care.” Zee Zee said and flew away reluctantly, she knew it was useless to argue with Blaze when she was on a job.
