Hello there, this is Katana, also known as Kat in some circles. I'm your friendly neighborhood twenty-two-year-old illustrator/writer whose sarcasm is second to none and harboring the ability to verbalize the parentheses in stories. I drink coffee and draw like an addict and am liable to get you into things that I like. Currently the wielder of a BFA in Illustration and a minor in English.

Questions? Comments? Death threats? Feel free to PM or message me in some iteration. I'm always around, you just don't know it.

A forway into acrylic: Kat's painting adventure

THIS POST IS ABOUT ART THINGS, IF YOU COULDN'T TELL BY THE TITLE Today we started using paint and therefore color in Illustration II. I was nervous as all get-out, having not touched acrylic paint since sophomore year of high school and eve...

Test/V-log: Dorm Tour

First, I ganked this from Trip. Interesting, if not trippy (*rimshot*) personality test.

You need to help others and to be thought of as a generous and kind individual. Often you are taken advantage of and regarded as simply part of the scenery. You work best when handling the work yourself; you do not appreciate a managerial role and tend to be uncomfortable in that position. Friendship is important to you, but it is generated on a personal basis, rarely a professional one. Consequently, family life is very important to you, and is often the most important aspect. Because of a strong sense of propriety however, you will sometimes consider the eccentric behavior of your friends and family as a personal affront. Often you find it difficult to speak up about personal anguish or pain, feeling instead that it is something an individual should bear in silence. Tradition is important to you, and you feel a sense of belonging when operating within the constraints of a predictable routine.

I'd agree with most of that.

And also, a v-log! Been meaning to do this for a while, but here it is now. Guest starring MagicalZombie.

Laid out all of my Illustration I projects earlier. I'm going to have a meeting with my prof tomorrow, just to see if I'm alright for review and the like.

This is what one semester looks like.

It's all down to waiting

I have not been posting. Agh. Why. WHY? WHY DAMMIT, WHY? I don't know. It's not like I have nothing to say. In fact, I have a lot of things to say. Look at this right now, I'm saying things, right?

No, it's just that I'm back to being BUSY. And I know that's a tired but true excuse, that hey, I shouldn't sound like I'm complaining. I mean, if I have time to do Movie Sign and podcasts (oh right, I was on two podcasts last Sunday), then I have time to have some semblance of a life, right?

It's once again time to crunch numbers! Classes take up 21 hours of my week, office work 10 hours, and, if I restaurant-work, another 10. So any given week, I am busy a minimum of 31 hours, and that's not even counting homework. Oh my God, homework. Anybody who ever thinks drawing pictures is easy shall get punched in the face.

So yeah, I'm tired like, all the time. Ah well. I'm alive.

Anyway, enough bitching. I went roof climbing last Monday night. 'twas cool.

This summer, I'm looking at taking two online classes, so therefore my junior year I can maybe slide by with five classes a semester. Wow, easing up my workload! And I'm looking at three studios in the fall, one art history, and (*groan*) grammar. Class listings haven't been posted for the art department yet, so it's hard to tell what my schedule will be like.

But I am getting ahead of myself. There's portfolio review in May, which will then cause my most sleepless weekend ever (turn them in Friday, get results on Monday). I'm not sure how to feel about it. I'm averaging a B, a high B at that, but it still feels...meh. I dunno.

Wow, this is one of the most whiny, rambling, depressing posts I've written. Let's stop that note and say....PUPPIES!!!

C4E2: Chicago, Chinatown, and the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo

Also includes my spring break round up! Whee...

Right so, stuff! Stuff happened this week! I played Pokemon Black but not a whole lot, went to the orthodontist, went to the dentist, and then finally had some stuff happen.

Wednesday my mom was substitute teaching a third grade class, so I tagged along to help out but also talk to the art teacher out of curiosity. Turns out third graders love just about anything you do, like drawings of lizards and making words from "leprechaun". Also discovered the wonders of Crayola art supplies since I last used them in grade school. Those oil pastels are AWESOME.

The nighttime shift had me hiking to MagicalZombie's house for a sleepover with our friend Trisha. We played Pokemon (yay for nerds) and talked and talked and talked and talked and decided to hit up IHOP at midnight. There we got hit on, or rather, MZ did, and it was hilariously awkward and weird. And...very strange because it was 1:30am.

Thursday I got to do nothing, and it was great.

Friday, yesterday, was C2E2, the Chicago Comics and Entertainment Expo. Took the train in with Autumn and Arturo, and at the station was a 3DS booth. Had a go and was thoroughly unimpressed. Basically it reminded me of the cover of my Doctor Who series 5 boxset, and while there may be a "graphic upgrade", I really don't think many games will take advantage of it and it will be more of a gimmick than anything else (like how the touchscreen on the DS isn't well-utilized by games). So Nintendo, nice try, but I'll wait for your real next gen.

ANYWAY

I finally got to eat Chinatown food, and it was remarkably cheap, especially split between five people. As a sidenote, it is fun to have a Japanese, a Mexican, a Chinese, a Caucasian, and a halfer (Japanese/Caucasian) at the same table in a Chinese restaurant. Better yet is when only one of them understands the waitress.

After that we headed to C2E2. Wandered around McCormick place and marveled at its girth before finding some con people and latching onto them. It was rather amusing to hit the entrance area, as it had this blazing red carpet that reflected onto the ceiling. You don't really understand, even with a picture, but seriously, it hurt your eyes to walk on it.

The show was smaller than ACen by far, but it was still rather impressive. Thing was, it was really all comics, and as such, we were rather out of place. I mean, the main reason for us going there was because our illustration prof was all "art and stuff!", but you didn't see any of that until the artist's alley.

That's why artist's alley was my favorite place. It was really fun and interesting to go around and see all the artists. It's really like an anime convention, except the art was overall a lot better (ouch, sorry). One guy was really nice and fantastic, wonderful talker, AMAZING art. Terumi and I bought a print from him while Jiaqi, Arturo, and Autumn got books. He gave us free stuff! Like, pulled things he was selling at the table and threw them at us because he was awesome like that.

And while at this man's booth, Brad Jones (aka the Cinema Snob on TGWTG) walked by. I walked up to him and said "I don't mean to sound like a creeper, I just want to say hi". Really nice guy, he signed my sketchbook.

That's the story of the con. Walking, walking, talking, admiring art, snatching a ton of business cards, more walking - LOTS of walking. I hit up the Alien Entertainment booth before leaving and got a TARDIS cell phone charm (it lights up and spins when you get messages!) and the first comic book in the 11 series that just started releasing this year. Also, theguywhoplays Winston Churchill was there, but it was $25 for an autograph. We figured out a way, though.

Adventures on the bus proved to be an adventure, getting off too early 'cause the bus driver gave faulty information and hoofing the mile back to the train station. Done it several times before, but yeah. Quick coffee/doughnut stop and we were on our way home.

So...ah. Spring break is always too fast and a general waste of time, but at least it was relaxing. Now I've got a cake to frost.
