We’ve got MOVIE SIIIIIIGN!
Every Sunday at 6:30, I nestle down with my laptop and enter theOtaku’s Chat, a drink and snack of some sorts typically in hand. The group mingles and talks about everything under the sun, until 7pm rolls around and TimeChaser does the countdown. From there, we watch a series of ten YouTube clips that comprise an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000, laughing and riffing along the way.
Bathroom and snack breaks are strewn in-between, making an episode that aired on a two hour TV slot last about…two hours on the internet.
Not to sound egotistical, but yeah, Movie Sign is my brainchild. I originally envisioned it as a sort of Sunday matinee, but due the awkwardness of syncing timezones, it was shifted to the evening (making it only slightly awkward rather than mostly). The premise was simple: We’d make a room in Chat, que up YouTube clips, and watch. Every week, we’d switch off between the hosts, and simply see how far we could get.
And so, with minimal planning in hand, me, TC, and Shinmaru hosted our own KTMA of Movie Sign – episode 303, Pod People. For me, it kicked off at 6pm, and I was barely able to scarf down dinner and make it in time.
We learned a lot from that test run – namely, to push it back an hour. Not many showed up (I think five did, including us), but it was still a blast. We were encouraged enough to keep going, though, and keep going we did.
The next week, we officially launched Movie Sign, complete with a spiffy banner. To honor our home of theOtaku, we kicked it off with a Japanese film, Prince of Space. Man, what a crackfest. Here, however, we learned one more thing: to make the Chat password protected, since people wandered in and would just sit around and be annoying…
At the start of the year, Movie Sign was fourth in the ten most important things to happen to theOtaku in 2008. In February, when the great Viacom MST3K Purge of YouTube occurred, we switched over to watching the shows on Google Video – but when that sweet nirvana came to an end, we crusaded on to our own account on YouTube, where we stand as MovieSign2525.
We get a surprisingly good turn-out for MS, and we’ve even managed to draw in new people – aka, “new meat” on their first run. It’s a fun time, and I hope we can do it for a long while.
