(Picture-heavy!)
Oh, where to even begin...
We've been told of this huge major snowstorm for the past few days. It was mainly talked about on Monday, from my memory. I think it was sorta brought up in my classes last Thursday, but nothing really came of it. Me being the ever doubtful person that I am, I claimed the storm that everyone was freaking out about was going to be a disappointment.
Monday night, a bunch of my floormates and I were hanging out in the lounge, doing work for Tuesday because we were certain we'd have class. Talked a lot about it and I gave my basic instructions on the freshies should and shouldn't do, and where to check for cancellations. See, the campus may not close, but professors are a lot easier to get to cancel. We watched the snow outside and called it a night around 1am.
Tuesday morning, I awoke to go to 11am History and did my usual thing of checking my e-mail and such. Well. Turns out History and EPFE at 2pm were both canceled by the profs. So I had nothing to do until 3:30.
The snow had ceased in the morning, but it started coming down around 2. It was just constant snowfall, not heavy, kinda fluttery, but dang was it coming down. A notice went out later that all classes from 3 onward were canceled. Sooo...no Tuesday classes.
At 5pm, it was announced that classes were canceled for Wednesday. I should note that this is rather historic, as NIU has not closed for weather in like, 20 years. We are very hearty folks 'round here. Me and some freshmen went to our favorite diner to celebrate, but that meant going in what was the start of the blizzard. Windy but not heavy snow. The goggles came in very handy.
I took some photos later that night.
(Personally my favorite.)
Woke up for Wednesday feeling so odd not being in Illustration at 8. Looking out the window, I found it very odd that none of the paths or service lots were cleared. Around here, those things are ALWAYS clean by 7 in the morning, but instead, we got nothing. Seeing the path wasn't cleared, it was a bit more of a trek to get my coffee.
Then I wrangled together a group to go snow romping. Layering for the snow is a bit more difficult when you don't have snowpants, so you improvise with layers of PJs and jeans.
After jumping in the snow, we headed to my car, wherein I retrieved my telescoping shovel and we made way to a snow mound. Found a bench in our trek on what is normally a path to get around, took a picture on the bench.
After a pitstop for drinks, me and one of the freshies trekked on out to explore the further reaches. As it turns out, no one really ventured to the art building, so there we went. I climbed a freaking huge mound that must've been two stories tall, then we cut through the law building to see where it led. It was very pretty.
Dinner was rather amusing, as we spent it lamenting over whether we'd have class Thursday or not. Taking the pessimistic route again, we instead marveled at the snow day we had.
Then there came a shout, and a huge cheer, like an explosion from everyone in the dining hall. Huh? What? What - you're kidding! Tomorrow too?! No classes two days in a row?!! NIU, you surprise me sometimes!
Jiaqi and I high-fived for getting out of History for a week, Terumi was excited to not have to lug ceramics work around, and Deb lamented on what some theatre show would to considering the were supposed to have their opening show. Ah well. Two days off!
This'll never happen again, so I'm enjoying it while it lasts.
