Blood & Regret
A Rayne story by VWBSZWAS
Rayne took one last sniff of the blood soaked air, there was no denying it any longer. The blood was that of his sister. He smiled sadly, his little sister who he had hated so much as a child, his little sister who he had thought of so much in the past five years. Their last meeting had ended horribly and he regretted his words now, but at the time he had hated her with such venom, blaming her for their mother’s death and consequently everything that went wrong with their family.
When he looked back now, with the distance of years, he could see that his hatred was unfounded. His mother dying during childbirth hadn’t been Kit’s fault, and neither was his fathers reaction to her death. It was his fault that he had driven his sister, no more than a baby, away with his hatred. It was his fault that she had become so cold and closed off. And it was his fault that their father had become so distant. Everything was my fault. He thought to himself, a thought that had entered his head far to often of late.
Since his last argument with Kit, Rayne had dedicated his life to hunting down the demon who had murdered his father and avenging his death. On the night of his fathers death Rayne had managed to track the demon deep into the forest that had surrounded the town, but, blind with a need for revenge, he had lost it before he could get even so much as a look, something that had angered him greatly.
After he’d searched the forest in vain for the missing demon, his anger slowly dying, he was left to consider what to do next. I have too go back to get Kit he’d finally decided as much as I detest her, it is what father would have wanted. And with that thought he’d returned to the village. Only to find Kit missing.
He’d found it ridiculously easy to follow her scent and it took him very little time to find her, fighting a demon no less, a couple of couple of miles from the town. He’d watched with surprise as she killed the demon with a single swing of her sword, a smile gracing her face for the first time in years, putting on an air of disdain, Rayne leaned against a tree and clapped his hands sarcastically, drawing Kit’s attention from the fallen demon to him.
She whirled around, her smile vanishing, and he smiled at her expression, to anyone else it would look blank and cold, but he could see by the tightening around her eyes and the hold of her shoulders, that she was annoyed and angry at him, Just like always He thought bitterly.
‘Brother’ She said, her voice cold and full of disdain.
‘Sister’ He replied. ‘So good to see your safe’ He filled the sentence with as much sarcasm as he could. But deep, deep down he felt proud that his sister could defend herself, not that he would ever admit it.
She laughed coldly, ‘You didn’t think I could be taken out by such a pitiful demon, one such as this may be a challenge for you Brother but it is no problem for me.’ She replied, taunting him, hatred in her eyes. His smile widened, but otherwise he didn’t react, She must be pretty shook up if she’s challenging me so blatantly, She’s usually much more subtle. He felt a pang of sympathy toward his sister, for her this was the equivalent of breaking down completely and it kind of scared him to see Kit, who was usually so collected, lose even this much control of her emotions.
‘I’m sure your aware that I am here to take you back to the village.’ He said, not bothering to reply to her taunt.
‘And I’m sure you are aware that I have no plans to do so.’ She said disdainfully. ‘As you can see Brother,’ she gestured to the demon corpse at her feet ‘I am perfectly capable of looking after myself and I have no desire to go with you.’ He felt regret at that, he hated his sister and wanted no more than to leave her to fend for herself, but it hurt that she hated him even more, though in hindsight it was a perfectly reasonable reaction, not that that made it any less painful.
‘As I have no desire to stay with you Sister, but it is what father would have wanted and I at least am willing to respect his wishes.’ He replied keeping all hints of his thoughts out of his voice. Certain that he would be able to change her mind eventually without having to resort to showing his true feelings.
‘You’re pathetic Brother, almost as pathetic as a mere human. It does not matter what father would have wanted he’s dead now and I refuse to let a dead man have any control over my life.’ She said ‘Are you so weak as to give in?’ The coldness with which she said it shocked him and he stared at her for a few seconds not believing that his sister could be so heartless.
‘Are you really so cold Sister, that you feel no sorrow for fathers death? Even I am sad that he is gone. Do you feel nothing?’ He felt his shock turn to anger, which leaked out into his voice, setting his words on fire, as he asked a question her knew he didn’t want answered.
‘Yes Brother, I do feel, I feel relief, relief that he is gone and that I am free to live as I wish. So should you Brother, there’s no point living your life by the wishes of a dead man.’ He gaped at her and she smirked back, the expression angering him even more. Why is it that she can always get to me.
‘Is that truly how you feel Sister? Have you no respect for your own father, your own flesh and blood?’ He yelled at her, trying to wound her with his words, but the smirk stayed stubbornly on her face.
‘I do not Brother and you would do wise to feel the same.’ He stared at her for a second more, his anger fading to nothing.
‘I do not understand you sister.’ The words were soft, barely above a whisper, but he knew that she had heard him and heard the truth they held.
The siblings stared at each other across the clearing, before Kit finally turned away baring her back in an obvious sign of dismissal . ‘Goodbye Brother, do not bother to follow me.’ He watched, too confused to do anything, as she picked up her stuff and left.
Rayne had stood in that clearing for nearly an hour after his sisters silhouette had disappeared over the horizon, before returning to the town and packing the last of his belongings. He had decided against following Kit and had chosen to track their fathers killer instead, after one last look over the town he had been brought up in, he turned his back on it all, leaving with nothing more than the demon’s scent and a shady description from on of the townsfolk, to go on.
That was five years ago and he knew much more about the demon now, the most important being that it wasn’t the weak, lower class demon it made itself out to be, in fact the demon was actually a powerful, higher class demon named Mauvais. Mauvais was a demon lord in his youth, but had thrown it away for the chance to gain more power. Fuelled by a myth, he had searched for the legendary blood amulet, an artefact that was said to be able to absorb demon power and transfer it to the amulet’s owner. It had taken many years of searching, but he finally found it in the possession of a powerful, higher class snake demon. This demon was his first victim and the source of the first power he absorbed.
Mauvais had spent the past few decades hunting down the most powerful demons in the land, including Rayne’s father, and adding their power to his collection. And while Mauvais had more than enough power to seriously threaten the control of the land, he was too intent in trying to gain demon power to focus on gaining political power and so was ignored by most in the position to stop him.
Rayne had been tracking Mauvais for five years now and after numerous battles, Mauvais was well aware that he was being followed, but didn’t see the value of defensive magic, which was where Rayne’s skills lay, and after a number of failed attempts on Rayne’s life, had chosen to simply ignore him.
Rayne had been spending time in a local village earning money to support his travels and it was over a week after the fight, when he finally came across the clearing that was the sight of kit and Mauvais‘s battle, and though both were long gone, it was easy for Rayne to piece together what had happened as he looked around the clearing. The ground of the clearing was cover in deep grooves, obvious signs of a fight and though the whole clearing was a mess, there was one tree that looked worse off then the rest.
Rayne went to take a closer look at the tree and found more blood there then anywhere else. He sniffed, it was defiantly his sisters, but it was tainted with the smell of strong magic, his sisters magic, which surprised him as Kit had never shown much interest in learning anything but the basics, preferring to rely more on strength and physical skill. He had never understood that about her, she had so much raw power, but she had never bothered to learn to tame it. Maybe she finally has. He thought, sniffing at the air again, This smells like very high magic and very well cast.
He took a closer look at the tree trunk, at about the height of his head was a huge crack, which Rayne suspected Kit had made, finally he turned his attention to the ground, raising one eyebrow in surprise at the perfectly circular scorch mark on the grass. He knelt down to take a closer look, switching to his second sight. He could still see the faint glow of his sister’s aura, which meant that her circle had been extremely strong and had stood for a long time, Interesting.
After a few more seconds of inspecting the ground he got to his feet, his mind a muddle of thoughts, this was obviously the remnants of a protective circle, something that took years of dedicated training to perfect. How had his sister managed it? Sure she had the power, but who had taught her? And how had she perfected it only five years? Even Rayne couldn’t cast a circle like this and he had a strong natural talent in defensive magic.
He considered once again, to go after Kit, as he could tell she was alive by the connection all demon siblings have, but decided against it. His goal was Mauvais and if Kit had gotten away, there was no doubt that he would eventually go after her again, Rayne could confront his sister then, there was no point going after her now, especially not after she had lost a fight.
He walked out of the clearing to follow Mauvais again, a pang of regret resonating inside him at the relationship he had with his little sister. Maybe one day I’ll be able to make things right with her, he thought, but he doubted it, especially now that he had chosen vengeance over his sister for the second time.
