Vixen has a few changes she wants to make to this, but i figured that since we haven't posted anything for ages i may as well post this chapter. So vixen, copy and past this to word and make whatever changes you want, then post the edited version and i'll delete this.
Also i haven't gone back through this so it'll probably be rougher than my previous chapters, but i am way over this chapter. I'll try harder next time, i promise. Anyway, here it is;
Chapter 7: Whitahkay joins the group
‘Hey wait up!’ Valentina called as she ran to catch up with Kit.
‘I said I was leaving. You shouldn’t have stayed behind with that boy, we don’t have time to wast on someone like that.’
‘What do you mean ‘someone like that’? He’s just like me!’ Valentina protested.
‘No. He’s not. You have dealt with your life, better than most of your kind, and you haven’t let the fact that you were born different from you peers corrupt your values and morals. That boy on the other hand, he may think he has no choice. But we all have choices and he was enjoying that fight. I could tell.’ Valentina stopped, but Kit kept walking, forcing her to catch up again.
‘But you fight and you enjoy it. How is what he does any different?’
‘I fight to increase my skill. Not to prove myself to others, especially to those weaker than me. I enjoy bettering myself and the thrill of the fight. I don’t enjoy hurting others, but it’s a part of my life. That boy back there let’s his anger control him, soon he will be a monster, just like all the other part-demons I have come across over the past few years.’ Kit sighed with just a hint of sadness, and continued forward.
‘But maybe we could help him.’ Valentina said, refusing to drop the subject. ‘Maybe if he sees how we’ve dealt with our lives he might be able to change.’
‘No. You’re lucky that I’m allowing you to accompany me, I refuse to let some random part-demon join us.’ Kit’s voice was firm and left no doubt that she was serious, but she could tell by Valentina’s sigh, that though she would drop the argument for now, this fight was far from over.
They walked in silence for a while before Valentina piped up ‘I invited him to join us you know.’ She said cheerfully.
‘You did what?!’ Kit asked stopping in her tracks.
‘He said no. But I thought I should tell you. In case he changes his mind.’ Valentina replied, ignoring the angry look in Kit’s eyes.
Kit took a breath and opened her mouth to reply, then thought better of it and continued walking. ‘Don’t ever do anything like that without asking me first.’ She finally said. ‘I am the leader here and I make the decisions.’
‘Fine. But I wont feel bad for asking him and I still think that we should take him with us.’ Valentina said.
I guess I can understand her feelings toward the boy. Kit thought to herself, purposefully ignoring Valentina’s last comment. But she needs to learn that not everyone can be saved and to focus on herself. We don’t have time for stuff like this.
Valentina and Kit continued walking, both lost in their own thoughts, when Kit heard footsteps a couple of hundred metres behind them. She listened closer but kept on walking. The last thing I need is for Valentina to know he’s following us. She could hear him getting closer and quickened her pace, but he must have know the county well, because he was gaining on them surprisingly fast. And kit knew there was no way of avoiding him without Valentina noticing that something was up.
About ten minutes later the boy stepped out from the trees behind them. Valentina spun around with surprise, but Kit just sighed. She had developed a sort of friendship with Valentina and she dreaded the thought that this meeting would ultimately lead to. Finally she turned around to face the boy, not quite sure what she was going to say. Before she could open her mouth the boy stepped forward and, completely ignoring Kit, started talking to Valentina.
‘I have decided to accept your offer.’ The boy said, slightly embarrassed. ‘I have cut my ties with the village and I am willing to help and join your group.’
‘What do you mean her group.’ Kit said, furious at being ignored. ‘I am the leader here and there is no way that I will allow you to come with us, so you may as well turn back now.’ She glared up at him, hands on hips, but he just laughed.
‘You, the leader? Don’t make me laugh. You can’t be more than ten years old.’
‘My age is irrelevant. I am the stronger and most powerful here, and I am in charge!’ She yelled the last part, and on the sidelines Valentina winced, surprised that this boy had made Kit, the usually so calm Kit, lose her temper.
‘What’s your name?’ Valentina asked. Surprising both Kit and the boy and making them break their death glare and look at her.
‘My name’s Whitahkay.’ The boy replied, going back to ignoring Kit. ‘What’s yours?’
‘Valentina.’ Valentina replied. ‘And this is Kit.’
Kit growled. ‘Right, now that the introductions are out of the way lets get going, we have places to be and Whitahkay has to get back to his village.’ She grabbed Valentina’s wrist and dragged her toward the other side of the clearing. Wanting to get as far away from Whitahkay as possible. Angry at him and angry that he was making her angry, she hated losing control of her emotions.
Whitahkay stood there for a second, staring after Kit with a slightly fearful expression on his face, before starting after them. ‘I’m not going back. I’ve made my decision and I’m going with you.’ He reached out to grab Kit’s arm, but stopped when she twirled to face him. Kit stared directly into Whitahkay’s eyes and focused her power.
‘Leave us, go back home.’ Her voice was cold and commanding and there was no doubt that she expected to be obeyed.
‘No.’
‘Wh… what did you say?’ Kit stuttered. How could he resist my mind control, it’s never failed me before.
‘I said no.’ Whitahkay replied, confused. ‘Why would you think that I would change my mind that easily.’
Kit stood there her anger turned to shock. ‘But, how could you..? Oh, never mind. Your not coming and that’s final.’
‘I am to coming, and you can’t stop me.’ Whitahkay stamped his foot and Valentina cracked up laughing.
‘What are you laughing at?’ Whitahkay and Kit said in unison.
‘You two. You’re arguing like five year olds.’ They glared at her and she took a step backwards. ‘Not that there’s anything wrong with that of course.’
Kit sighed. Why did everything have to be so difficult? She was seriously considering knocking Whitahkay out and leaving, when something jumped out of the bushes, crashing into Valentina and sending her flying.
What the..? Kit thought, before rushing at the demon that was now standing in the middle of the clearing. She drew her sword as she ran and severed the demon’s head from it’s body with a single stroke. I can’t believe I was so distracted that I didn’t notice this demon. Kit thought to herself. What if it had killed Valentina? Her thoughts were interrupted by a sound from the other side of the clearing. She lifted her head to see another demon about to attack the now unconscious Valentina.
Kit started running, but she knew that she wouldn’t be able to reach her in time. She was too far away even with her enhanced speed. Just when she thought all was lost, Whitahkay jumped forward. He was carrying a massive sword and Kit could feel the power radiating from it. Whitahkay swung the sword toward the demons head and though the blow was clumsy and unskilled, it easily sliced through the demon skull.
Kit stood in shock for a second before running forward to kneel at Valentina’s side, all façade of emotionlessness gone. She dropped her sword on the ground beside her and grabbed Valentina’s shoulders, relieved to find her still breathing. ‘Valentina can you hear me. Valentina.’ She squeezed her shoulders slightly, letting go when Valentina let out a small groan of pain.
Valentina’s eyelids fluttered and finally opened and Kit sighed with relief, though the worry didn’t leave her face. ‘Are you alright?’ She asked, moving back and trying to regain control of her emotions.
‘I think so. What happened?’ Valentina asked as she pushed herself up into sitting position.
‘A couple of demons attack us.’ Kit replied. ‘But it’s ok, they’re dead now. And your alive, thanks to him.’ She gestured to Whitahkay who was standing a couple of metres away. ‘If he hadn’t killed that last demon you would’ve been dead now.’
‘Really?’ Valentina asked Whitahkay. ‘You saved me?’
Whitahkay shuffled awkwardly. ‘I Guess so.’
Valentina got to her feet, slightly shaky but otherwise steady, and threw her arms around Whitahkay. ‘Thank you.’ She said as he tried to get out of her embrace. ‘I really don’t feel like dying today.’ She finally let Whitahkay go and he took a hurried step backward, looking more embarrassed than anything else.
‘That’s ok, it’s really not that big a deal.’ Whitahkay said blushing.
Kit looked on with amusement, it was obvious that Whitahkay had little experience with girls and he wasn’t that skilled with a sword either, considering the blow he had delivered to the demon before. That brought her attention back to his sword. Whitahkay was holding it limply in his hand, paying little attention to it, but Kit could still feel the power radiating from it.
‘Can I have a look at your sword?’ She asked, taking it from him before he could reply. It was easily half the length of Whitahkay’s body and was almost as tall as Kit. The sword was heavy but Kit lifted it with ease, holding it up to inspect it in the light. The blade was a bright silver and inlaid into the hilt was a single yellow topaz. ‘Where did you get this from?’ She asked.
‘It was my grandfathers.’ Whitahkay replied. ‘Can I have it back now?’
‘Just a second.’ Kit said and opened up her second sight. First she looked at Whitahkay’s aura. It was a deep forest green in colour, with slashes of black, blue, red and gold that represented the pain and hardship he had been through. The only other noticeable thing was the glowing symbol that represented his demon clan, it was a golden eye surrounded by two fangs which said that he was from one of the more respectable snake clans.
Finally she turned her gaze to his sword. It glowed faintly green, the same shade as Whitahkay’s aura, but occasionally Kit could she other colours shinning through. Flashes of blue, purple, yellow, orange as well as a multitude of others. This sword holds the power of many generations. Kit thought as she handed the sword back. It’s a pity that it’s in the hands of someone so incompetent.
‘Come on Valentina.’ Kit said, turning to leave. ‘We’ve already wasted enough time today.’
‘Awww, come on kit. Please can we keep him.’ She said grabbing Whitahkay’s hand putting on her cutest expression. ‘He did save my life after all so he can’t be too bad.’
Kit sighed as she thought it over. It was true that he had saved Valentina’s life, but if he hadn’t distracted her, she would have sensed the demons long before they attacked. No that was unfair, she was the one who had lost control and for such petty reasons too. She shook her head, ashamed at herself. Then she thought back to his aura. The green was unimportant, it was simply what he had been born with, no it was the other colours that interested her. Red for pain, blue fro grief and purity, gold for strength and courage and black, black was the hardest colour to interpret, it could represent evil, death, or nearly any other strong negative emotion, or experience.
He’s obviously been through a lot, Kit thought, and Valentina defiantly wants him to come with us. She was surprised to see just how much of a influence Valentina’s opinion had on her, their friendship had grown a lot in the past few weeks.
‘Fine.’ She said turning to Whitahkay. ‘You can come, but you have to remember that I am in charge and you have to do what I say. Understand?’
‘Yes.’ Whitahkay said reluctantly, as he sheathed his sword into the tiny dagger sheath on his hip. The sword glowed for a second then slipped in.
‘How the hell did you do that?’ Valentina asked with her usual excitement.
‘I’m not quite sure, but I figured that since the sword came out of it, that it would fit back in.’ Whitahkay replied and kit sighed.
‘It’s a simply magic.’ Kit said. ‘A displacement charm. Though I’ve never seen one used like this before, it’s quite a good idea.’ She was trying to be civil, if she was going to have to travel with Whitahkay then she should at least try to start off on a better foot.
