Life's A Drag

Ever since Davie was a toddler, his parents had pushed him to play and act like the other children. He never did; he was just the boy who crayoned his own drawings in the kindergarten class, pushing away the colouring books, and, when he was older, waving the girls' advances away with a flick of his perfectly straightened black hair. He'd always watched the pretty girly cheerleaders and burly jocks from high up in the stands. It had made him feel alone. Living with demanding parents and n older sister who, well, got to do everything he wanted to do, made him bottle up his feelings. He'd tried playing drums and guitars to make him feel better, but had given up quickly. He hadn't had a way to let everything out for years.

He had a brilliant way of doing it now, though.

Davie snuck quietly into his older sisters room, careful not to disturb her, and silently opened the top drawer in the dressing table. His sisters silky nightgowns and stockings were folded neatly in the small drawer. Davie stroked the soft materials gently, loving the feel of the silky gowns slipping through his fingers. He glanced over to his sisters bed. She hadn't stirred.6

Davie carefully picked a single nightgown out of the drawer and folded it over his forearm. He slid the drawer shut and closed the door, quiitly quietly. He went into the bathroom and closed the door without turning the lights on, sat down on the edge of the bath and locked the door. He waited until his eyes had adjusted to the dark, and held the nightgown up to his nose. He breathed deeply, smelling the fresh, girly perfume smell.

He rubbed the cold silk on his cheek, slowly fingering the lace and spaghetti straps. He smiled and his breath became shuddery. It felt beautiful, and he couldn't wait...

Davie stripped his pyjamas off until he was standing in his underwear. He pulled the nightgown over his head quickly, repulsed by the, well...boyish silhouette in the mirror. The material slipped over his bare skin and clung to his sides. He smiled at the dark shape in the mirror. He felt normal, not at all strange or weird. He felt like he was meant to dress up like this. It was right.

He smoothed the creases out of the gown and pulled the hem down. He felt smaller in the dress; like all he had to do was put it on and he'd be able to escape this world of sport, testosterone and Nuts magazine. He was free like this.

Davie stared in the mirror for at least half an hour. Afterwards, he tugged the gown over his head and got dressed again. He cautiously went into his sisters room and replaced the nightgown, backing out silently and retreating across the landing to his own room. He recalled the feeling of the soft silk on his skin and held a pillow on his arms and legs to try and get the wonderful feeling back. When it didn't work, he curled up underneath the duvet and squeezed his eyes shut.

He couldn't wait for tomorrow night.
