Today, Deadline reports that U.S. film company Skydance Productions is currently in talks about trying to get the license to produce a U.S. live-action "Star Blazers" film (note that we are talking about a live-action film based on the Americanized English dub of "Space Battleship Yamato" and not on the anime's original Japanese version). Furthermore, Skydance's head David Ellison indicates that if the deal gets through, he and Josh Klein will produce the U.S. movie with Christopher McQuarrie (the writer of the 1995 movie "The Usual Suspects") working on its screenplay.
My thoughts: although info on cast and release date aren't yet decided on, this news makes me happy as a fan of old school anime because whether or not the Japanese live-action "Space Battleship Yamato" will be licensed for North American distribution anytime soon, this film can be an opportunity introduce the new generation of Sci-Fi film viewers to "Star Blazers", espcially when it seems like most of North America-based otaku society today don't care about old school Sci-Fi anime. Furthermore, I hope the U.S. movie does become a hit if produced and filmed so it can increase the North American popularity of the Sci-Fi classic.
