FILM///Wreck-It Ralph (A spoiler-free review)

So I saw Wreck-It Ralph the other day in theaters. Here's my general reaction:

This movie feels remarkably different from other Disney movies. Not saying that's a bad thing, though, as it shows the company's trying to branch out and try different things. If anything, coming from Disney's main animation studio, I thought it was better than both of Pixar's last two efforts, but it's certainly not better that some previous animated films from the house of mouse.

On a more positive bent, it had moments that genuinely surprised me, and twists that I did not see coming. The cameos of the first 40 minutes are glorious to look at and recognize as a gamer. The movie's animation is gorgeous as well, with bold colors and a great visual style where each game carries its own look.

The characters are nicely done (aside from Vanellope... dlkhjruigah she's annoying). But I liked Ralph and Felix; I thought they carried the personalities of their respective roles well. And one of the biggest surprises was how much I enjoyed Sgt. Calhoun's character. King Candy and Sour Bill are also two of my favorites.

One of my complaints is that there were missed opportunities to make this movie truly a masterpiece. I think a little too much time is spent in Sugar Rush, but I didn't mind the climax in said game. Another complaint of mine is the crude humor. All right, we get it, Vanellope is supposed to be irreverent; we get it, "Hero's Duty" sounds like "Hero's Doody"; WE GET IT, STOP WITH THE POOP JOKES THERE'S CANDY EVERYWHERE YOU'LL SPOIL THE CANDY.

Overall, though, it was an enjoyable movie. The pros outweigh the cons, so it's definitely worth a look if you're interested in something different from Disney!
