Chapter 2: Way home
Aya let out a loud breath, ‘Great’.
She turned to face Sephiroth. He was still sitting on the rock, with his elbows resting on his knees; his chin in the palm of his one hand, watching her. Right, she thought. His eyes stayed on her as she made her way over. She came to a stop in front of him. Now what?
He calmly peered up at her with emotionless eyes, like he’s expecting something to happen. It made her a bit uneasy. Strange, tilting her head slightly, no man has ever made me feel this way. It’s those eyes. I have to admit, it is…
‘Is there something you want to say?’ His deep voice had a clear, almost liquid quality to it. Aya’s jaw slammed shut, she did not dare say a word in fear of loosing that incredible sound in her ears. ‘Well…?’ He asked impatiently. She felt like a nervous little girl being questioned by an adult for doing something wrong. Aya came to her senses and cleared her throat.
‘Yes…, um….’ Come on. What the hell is wrong with me? She gave herself a mental shake, took a deep breath and pointed. ‘Mountain is up, village is down and home is this way’. She smiled a small smile, turned and started to walk up the path. Sephiroth’s gaze followed her. He carefully observed the way she moved; graceful, with a gentle sway of her hips. ‘Annoying girl’ He muttered, ignoring a strange feeling. He got up from the rock, took up his sword and started after her.
The way to the house was long and steep, making Aya very grateful for all the times she had to run up and down the path for urgent matters, it made the walking hardly a challenge. She glanced over her shoulder to make sure Sephiroth was keeping up. To her surprise, he was 2 strides behind her and not showing any signs of fatigue or a need to rest. Their eyes met for a brief moment, she quickly turned to look ahead. She didn’t want to trip and fall, especially not in front of him. How embarrassing would that be?
Aya let out sighed, thinking about her upcoming mission. Another day, another drama, these guys never learn... Oh well, I spouse someone has to teach them a lesson, it might as well be me. An image of her beating a gang of 15 men alone crossed her mind. She chuckled remembering the look on there faces when this little girl whooped their butts. Ah yes…good times, she chuckled again.
Sephiroth thoughts, however, were occupied with questions. He looked down at the small woman, walking in front of him. How did she do that? What kind of talents does this girl have? His eyes dropped to her legs, disrupting his thoughts for a moment. He slowly traced the lines of her perfectly lean toned muscles, his sight settling on her hips, watching the gentle movement as she walks. He started to get that same strange feeling, but was instantly lost when the images of those 2 creatures flashed in his mind. But the real question is what those creatures are…? His thoughts trailed off as the image danced in his mind.
After hours of walking they started to hear the faint sound of rolling thunder. They could see glimpses of a waterfall through the dense trees; the noise growing louder as they approached the area. The waterfall was about 250 feet high, with a huge pool collecting the water below. Thick vines snaked their way up the rock face behind and to the sides of the waterfall. A medium size patch of green grass was on the far side of the pool and the only way to get there is to swim. Thick brush and trees surrounded the huge pool, making it impossible to access from the sides. The only way in was through two large boulders that leaned against each other to create an archway. There was a round stone on the other side to close off the archway for privacy. This was one of Aya’s favoured places. No-one ever came here, but her. This was her small peace of heaven.
‘Hey you!!’ A voice called, bringing Aya out of her daydreaming. Aya and Sephiroth looked around.
‘Who, Me?’ she asked.
‘Yes you.’ Came a sarcastic tone. This she didn’t like one bit.
‘Who are you and what do you want!?’
‘The name’s Flint.’
Suddenly, standing next to them in the archway of the two boulders, was a man, with short dark brown hair and deep purple eyes. He was an average size man, with a medium athlete build. He wore simple brown pants, dark brown boots and a white shirt. A gun was strapped to his one leg, with a whip hanging from his belt. He was still young and looked a bit arrogant for his own good.
‘You live around here?’
‘Yes’ she said slowly, lifting an eyebrow. ‘Why?’
‘I am looking for a girl named Aya Miyamoto.’
‘Why?’
‘I want to challenge her.’
‘Why?’
‘The people around here say she is the best fighter around. So, where can I find her?’
Sephiroth lifted an eyebrow. Fighter? He looked down at the small woman next to him.
Aya studied Flint’s eyes before answering. ‘You’re talking to her.’
Flint looked at her and then burst out laughing. ‘You... You are Aya Miyamoto. You are a bit small to be a fighter, huh?’ He said, lifting his one hand to indicate a small size standing of the ground. That got her steamed.
Flint’s eyes jumped from Aya to Sephiroth. He looked him up and down with an arrogant smile.
‘Nice outfit, it’s a bit early for Halloween, don’t you think?’
Sephiroth unnatural eyes snapped back to Flint. He gripped the hilt of his sword tightly, a sudden rush of pure hatred pounded through his veins. An incredible urge for blood, begged him to kill this arrogant human for his insult. Flint leaned over to the side checking out Sephiroth’s sword.
‘Nice sword. A bit long, but nice.’
‘It would be my pleasure to educate you on its many qualities.’ Sephiroth replied, his perfect lips curling into a dangerous smile. Through Aya experience of dangerous situations she instantly knew where this was going and from the look in Sephiroth’s eyes, it was no place anyone wants to go. She sensed a dark vibe coming from him and she had to do something. So she interrupted Flint before he could respond to the hidden threat, drawing his attention back to her.
‘You must be new here.’ She stated, folding her arms.
‘Yes’.
‘I thought so. Well, unfortunately I am very busy today and will have to give the challenge a pass’. She turned to continue up the path.
‘How disappointing, ‘Flint sighed, placing his hands on his hips, ‘Just what I expected from a little sissy girl.’
That comment made Aya stop dead in her tracks. She slowly turned back to face him, giving him a dark look. ‘I’m sorry you want to run that by me again?’ She asked, with a deadly tone. It was a question she did not expect an answer. The arrogant smile on Flint’s face disappeared. He slowly lowered his hands to his sides. Sephiroth looked at Flint, pleased at his sudden distress of the fatal mistake he just made.
‘Fine.’ She finally said. In a blink of an eye she was standing right in front of him. Sephiroth eyes narrowed. How did she - , but his thoughts was interrupted by Aya’s voice.
‘I don’t have time for arrogant boys like you.’ She said irritated.
A few seconds later Aya tided a knot tightly of the vine she used with Flints whip, to hang him from a tree.
‘What the…, how did I…?’ Flint started. He was hanging 20 feet of the ground. ‘How did u…?’
Aya leaped down from the part of the tree she tided the vine to. She came to stand in front of him on the ground, looking up. ‘That is my little secret……this is what happens when you challenge a “little sissy girl”’ she said, almost laughing.
‘Let me down you little crytin’ Flint yelled, trashing in the air.
‘Ok. First of all its cretin, if you’re going to insult me do it properly. And secondly NEVER judge a book by its cover, no matter how small the book.
Bye – bye’ she waved and walked off.
‘Hey, you can’t leave me here!’ he screamed. Aya waved again over her shoulder without looking back. Sephiroth followed her up the path, looking back at the struggling Flint. Not quit the justice he was looking for, but it will have to suffice. ‘How did you do that?’ he asked.
Aya’s heart jumped into her throat hearing his voice. ‘Do what?’ She asked back. He didn’t respond. He didn’t even hear her question; he was off in his own thoughts again.
*’Gee, this guy is as responsive as a brick.’ Yami complained.
‘Yes, he dose seem odd. What do you think Aya?’ Telisa asked. ‘Aya?!’
‘Hmm...?’
‘Are you listening?’ Telisa asked, pulling Aya’s ear.
‘Huh, did you say something?’
Telisa sighed. ‘Yes, I asked, what do you make of this guy?’
‘I don’t know. It’s too early to tell what he is really like.’
‘That’s true’ Telisa admitted
‘Well I think we should keep a close eye on him.’ Yami said, narrowing her red eye.
‘Yami is right. Just until we can trust him’
‘Ok. We –‘*
Aya’s phone rang, cutting their discussion off abruptly. Aya reached into her pocket and pulled out her phone.
‘Yes Fie ku?’ -------
‘Calm down Fei and talk slower. I can’t hear you if you talk so fast’--------
Aya exhaled noisily.
‘Slower.’--------
‘That’s better. Now what’s wro -’--------
‘A Diger! Ok, I’m on my way, just don’t let it eat anyone else.’ She hung up the phone.
‘It seems that we are going to have to run the rest of the way’ she said, putting the phone back in her pocket.
‘Hope you can keep up’ she smiled at Sephiroth over her shoulder. She turned and sprinted up the path at an incredible speed. Sephiroth just smirked and disappeared up the path after her.
How about a race, let’s see how good he is on speed, she thought. It wasn’t a split second after that thought when she noticed that he had caught up to her. The man is fast, but how fast is he really, she smiled. She increased her speed, pulling away from him easily. Sephiroth watched as Aya started to leave him behind, annoyed, he too increase his speed and caught up to her again. Good, she thought, let’s see if you can beat this. She gave powerful leaps forward making her go faster. Sephiroth easily matched it. The large house came in to view. We will continue this another time, she smiled, pleased with the results. Aya came to a stop next to a building, which was off to the one side of the main house. Sephiroth stopped next her; he glanced over at the large dark wooden frame of the main house. It was an old Japanese styled house, with windows covered by wooden shutters and large sliding doors, some made of wood and some glass. It was surrounded by large, beautiful designed gardens.
A big fish pond was set in the middle of one of the gardens surrounding the house. The pond had a bridge to cross over into the other half of the gardens.
Roars and screeches from the Diger, with the shouts of people could be heard from the other side of the house. Aya quickly ran in to the building to emerge a few seconds later with a bow and a quiver full of arrows on a belt tide around her hips. Sephiroth looked at her from bottom-up. She smiled at him and ran off. He quickly ran after her. This he had to see.
They came around the house to where all the noises were coming from and there in a large clearing of the garden was a beast surrounded by 10 people, trying to fight it off.
The beast was bigger than a horse, with dark brown scales that looked like thick horns on its back that served as protective armour, a short neck and a short snout. Its teeth were long and sharp, with curved claws as sharp as blades from all the digging. The tail was as long as the body self, with a ball of spikes on the tip. It is an ugly creature that meats eat. It will eat any meat from an animal to a person, what ever it can get. There is no difference when it comes to food.
The Diger is known as an underground dragon that lives in the mountain; the deep caverns they dig are like a maize of endless tunnels that runs under the mountain. It’s easy to get lost in them and Aya had first hand experience in getting lost in those tunnels and was almost eaten by one of the Digers. It had chased her around the tunnels for days, until she finally found the exit. She promised herself to never ever go there again.
It was also very seldom for these dragons to come to the surface, but sometimes they do wander into her garden or into the village at the foot of the mountain, when looking for food. Unfortunately there is only one way to get rid of them and that is to kill them, because they’re not scared off easily. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Aya had already kill 5 in the past, but most she was able to scare away.
The Diger jumped for a nearby man, an arrow with a diamond tip zipped through the air, hitting its mark just below the armour plated scales. It howled from the unexpected pain. The beast shot Aya a hungry and angry glare. ‘That’s it big boy, come this way…Come play with me.’ She said taking out another arrow. It slowly turned to her, looking at her with fierce yellow eyes. She nocked the arrow ready for its attack.
With a terrible howl it charged at her with frightening speed. Aya gripped the bow tight. It leaped high into the air. Taking a deep breath she pointed the arrow up, aimed for its chest and......released. The arrow hit its target, right between two scaled into the heart. The beast fell on the ground, with a hard thud.
Aya exhaled with relief. ‘Well that was easy. Normally they put up a bigger fight and don’t go down so easily.’ She told Sephiroth, turning half way to look at him.
But it was not over yet. With its last energy, the Diger jumped up and attacked one last time. The sudden attack caught Aya off guard; she had no time to nock another arrow. Without a second thought she grabbed one arrow from the quiver and stabbed it through the Diger’s palate into its brain. It jaws came down on her arm like a bear trap slamming shut. She silently winched as the pain shot up her arm. They stared at each other for a second. Aya could feel the beast hot fowl breathe on her face. Finally the Diger’s jaws relaxed and it fell to the ground, dead.
Aya looked at the puncture holes in her arms. ‘Mmm…’ She turned back to Sephiroth. ‘Welcome to my world. Hope you enjoy your stay.’
His eyes went from Aya’s smiling face to the dead Diger on the ground. What next? He smirked. His gaze lifted to her arm that was covered in blood. She followed the direction of his eyes.
‘It looks worse than it really is.’ She waved her hand to dismissal. ‘Well now that that is over, let me show you your room and…give you a grand tour of the house’. She swiped her bloody arm dramatically in the direction of the house, before heading in its direction. One of her house maids ran up to her to hand her a damp towel to clean off the blood. Sephiroth looked one last time at the Diger before walking off.
