Once in a Lifetime
Night watched Lizzy’s face as she tried to cover up her emotions with others. She was a lot stronger than he when it came to her mind. He was starting to realize what the phrase “Great things in small packages” was all about or something to that effect. She was always so positive and it moved him in ways he wasn’t used too. She was a pillar and he was but one nail in the support.
He lazily watched her freshen up and though he knew his stomach was loud, hers was apparently more boisterous than his. He laughed aloud at Lizzy’s rumbling tummy. "Little Elizabeth, I do believe you might be floating along in the same boat as I." He wiped a tear from his face and watched her face with pure amusement as she tried her best to look mean… and ended up looking more adorable than usual.
"I don't know what we're supposed to do. It's not like we can start climbing our way d-..." Lizzy said but cut off her sentence midway… What was she looking for? He sat back upon the bed and stared as she worked something on the wall. Her eyes, ever searching, apparently had found something his had not. Her wondrous, illuminative eyes… his vision faded out as his mind took over and he started to day dream.
"Look, Night, look!" Lizzy said with delight and he blinked a few times coming back to reality. Night stared at the strange fruits, or what appeared to be fruits that Liz had found. He wondered if they were safe to eat… but if the Spreekalings had stored them here then they must be safe. He was still cautious but Night nodded to Elizabeth for the go ahead to eat them anyways. So far the Spreekalings had been trustworthy although curious and the elder had even saved Lizzy’s life.
Night picked up one of the strange fruits as well; it was a bright orange and forest green. He eyed it at first, smelled it and then tested the skin with his finger tips to see if it had a rind or was completely edible. He looked at Lizzy, already chowing down on the pink and blue one she held in her hands. The meat inside was white and she seemed to be enjoying it very much. She smiled up at Night with juice dripping from her chin and pulp on her nose. He laughed thunderously, as everything else he did was loud and echoing.
He took out his knife and sliced the bizarre fruit in two, setting half aside for Lizzy to sample for herself. It dripped a blue liquid but the pulp inside was like that of a lime. Night sniffed it once more and thought a second before slowly leaning in to bite down. A burst of sweet and tart rushed over his tongue and he wasn’t quite sure if he liked it or not. It reminded him of limes, coconuts and star fruits all in one… he didn’t understand it but they needed something to eat and so he tasted various fruits until he found ones that he liked.
There was one in particular that he found was his favorite. It was shaped like a banana but it had spines on the outside. It was difficult to handle but with as thick of skin as he possessed he would be fine. He didn’t let Elizabeth handle it, he peeled it for her. It was orange and yellow, like a sun set and the inside was the consistency of a banana for the most part, except for the second layer inside. He picked off part of the second layer, which was more like a berry attached to the banana like pulp. He slowly tasted one… a very sweet flavor similar to a berry he’d eaten once before. A berry he’d acquired while on the high seas, raiding a Chinese charter ship. Lychee he believed it was labeled, whatever that was.
He scooped part of the pulp out with his knife and placed it on his tongue. After a moment of chewing and impatient looks from Elizabeth he smiled at her with amusement. “I am most confident you will love this one Elizabeth.” He handed her one of the berries and a piece of the pulp as well. “I am sure I will never taste a fruit such as this, of lychee, banana and ice cream. It almost feels sinful to each such a treat for breakfast.” He laughed aloud again and started to peel yet another for Liz.
As Elizabeth enjoyed the last of what Night has peeled for her he gathered the shreds of peels and discarded them into a basket off to the side. He wasn’t sure what the Spreekalings would do with them but he didn’t want to make a wrong move. He cleaned off his knife and returned it to its sheath, drying his hands on a rather fuzzy looking towel that was actually a leaf woven with mosses. He was impressed at how everything here was so natural and that they had lived purely off of the lands. He was jealous in a way but he had loved the seas and his ships. He would not want to give them up.
He sat himself back upon the lofty bed and waited. He didn’t know what he was waiting for but he wasn’t about to climb down those damn trees himself. He felt almost helpless in a way because he hated heights. Land or Water but damn the trees… that was not a place for him.
Breakfast
Lizzy sat there for a few moments still giggling. finally a yawn interrupted the giggles and she stretched, easing her muscles. She spun to the side, lowering her legs off the bed before standing.
"I feel... great, actually. I had a bad dream that made me wake up in the middle of the night, though..."
She made a face that was immediately covered up by a grin. "I don't know about you, but I'm starving!" This made her burst into giggles once again as she wobbled over to the wash basin, shaking from laughter. She cupped her hands, lowering them in the water to catch some and rinsed her face off.
More rumbling echoed throughout the room. This time it was Night's turn to laugh, almost causing the room to shake it was so loud.
"Little Elizabeth, I do believe you might be floating along in the same boat as I."
He wiped a tear from the corner of his eye as Lizzy tried to make an angry face at him. Of course that worked. She surveyed the room, hoping there might be some source of food lying around. None could be found, though. She sighed and looked at Night.
"I don't know what we're supposed to do. It's not like we can start climbing our way d-..."
Her eyes widened as she walked over the side of the room where the wall looked a tad misshapen. She ran her fingers lightly over the same spot a few times.
she tilted her head to the side as she kept at it. Night was thoroughly confused, but kept quiet. She was usually spot on about random things like this.
Thirty seconds later and a soft click was heard. Lizzy jumped in delight. "Look, Night, look!"
Lizzy was proud of herself. She had noticed while aimlessly staring at the wall that one of the whorls looked... odd. So she decided to do some investigating. Luckily she did, for inside was a cabinet of sorts. Lined with a few shelves and a dip on the bottommost part of it, there was food! Fruit, to be exact.
Her eyes were as wide as the strange pink and blue one that was directly in front of her on the middle shelf. She reached for it, noticing it was shaped like a small watermelon. She ran her fingers over it, curiosity itching at her, making her want to dig in.
She twisted around to look at Night and tilted her head to the side again in question.
Deeply Stirring
Night awoke to Lizzy calling his name rather loudly in his ear. He tried to jostle the sleep from his brain in order to figure out what she wanted. It wasn’t a worried call for him so his head swam with grogginess a bit longer. He groaned as he leaned forward and blinked at her with a haze in his vision. He heard her giggle and was a bit confused but the corners of his lips couldn’t help but tilt in response.
“Night… Are you hungry by any chance?” she asked him as he scratched his head and pushed back his dark hair. His stomach rumbled again and rather loudly. His eyes went a bit wider and then he laughed. “Seems like that’s a yes little Lizzy.” He leaned forward a bit to stretch out his legs and then straighten his back out, reaching for the sky. After a loud and apparently good stretch he swung his feet over the side of the earthly bed.
He walked like a stone golem to the water basin and splashed his face once or twice. After shaking out his hair he tied it back again and set to put on his boots. “Elizabeth…” he said, sticking one foot in. “Yes Night?” she giggled again with amusement that it took him so long to wake up. “How are you feeling?” He asked her, deliberately trying to keep distraction in his voice.
Apples
Lizzy rolled over and cuddled closer into Night's arms where it was warm. She could hear the sounds of birds twittering outside amongst the trees. There were plenty of other sounds mingling with the birds' calls, but it was impossible for her to guess at what they were.
She lay there like that for a few minutes, not wanting to get up. It just didn't seem like something she wanted to do at the moment. This made her smile to herself. After a few minutes she heard a loud rumbling sound. She lifted her head and looked around the room for the source of the sound.
She gave up after not seeing any possible source and put her head back down. Suddenly she heard it again. She scowled to herself in annoyance. She wanted to know what was causing the sound! Not even a minute later, she heard it again. this time she noticed how close it seemed to be. She paused, waiting for it to come again. This time it definitely sounded like it was right next to her.
Getting a bit nervous, she buried her face into Night's chest. RUUUUMBLE
".....You're kidding..." she said quietly to herself. She scooted down so that her ear was right over where Night's stomach would be. RRRUUUUUUMBLE
Lizzy started giggling uncontrollably. "Night!" she said as she started shaking Night. His only response was to mumble something and then go quiet. "NIIIIGHT!" she yelled right near his ear as she poked his belly. He groaned and sat up some, blinking lazily down at her. She couldn't stop herself from giggling more now.
"Night... Are you hungry by any chance?"
Sleepless Sleep
It must have been midnight when Night felt Lizzy stirring beneath his arms. He held still as if still asleep and listened. He didn’t want to shock her from the nightmare she was apparently having. Sometimes disturbing one from such a nightmare could affect them in negative ways. So, he laid still and waited.
After a few moments Lizzy woke with a start, he held as still as possible, yet relaxed as not to alarm her. He would answer if she called for him but he still felt reserved and didn’t want to over whelm her. He made himself available but didn’t push. His mind still felt like a child’s room, things scattered everywhere and piled up to his knees.
The night sky was raging with wind, rain and lightning but up here in the trees it seemed as though it wouldn’t faze us. Lizzy seemed to be calming down and eventually she fell back asleep. Night kept her sheltered from the wind for the rest of the night and though he slept lighter than normal he felt completely at ease.
