Color and Wonder
Night felt like he was going to have a heart attack. Elizabeth was very curious and loved to venture off on her own to investigate. He had never met one as fearless as she. He wondered where her courage came from and him being such a big guy, why the hell was he so worried?? It was the fear of the unknown that bothered him… that really didn’t seem to bother Lizzy.
He wondered if they were being followed. He would see shadows or felt as if he saw something out of the corner of his eye but would shake it off knowing that everything in this forest was alive.
Not too far ahead was an opening. Night was excited, inside, to be out of this walking death trap. Although nothing had happened he really didn’t feel comfortable staying in there any longer than he had too. As they approached the end of the forests grips there was a curtain of odd colored roses. He thought it strange for them to grow this way but he kept on. Lizzy happen to know where she was going, he was just the muscle for now and so he would do his part to help her in this quest she was given. Night looked over the roses one more time, tilting his head to the side to figure out why he felt funny about them. They were a variation of glittering violets and reds, they ranged in all shades of that family and yet he still felt nervous about them.
As they came upon this curtain he reached out to touch one, before Elizabeth’s curiosity could capture her feet and he pulled one closer to him. Glass… they were all made of glass… His eyes went wide and wondered how glass roses could grow or rather, be made? He wasn’t sure how it worked and the stems seemed to be real… He plucked one from its birthplace and realized that it was dripping its contents onto the ground. His eyes went wide once more with wonder. All of the color in the glass rose had leaked out onto the ground as if the thing had been a container.
Night shook his head and looked a Liz. He gave her the empty glass rose and lifted an eye brow. “What of this? How can this be?”
Tik tak
Elizabeth walked along merrily, singing small snippets of songs that would pop into her head. she could tell Night was worried and that he was anxious to get where they were headed, but she felt fine. They had their own guardian of sorts, after all.
Every now and again, she would she a flash of orange moving through the trees. The creature from the night before walked slow, but sure did move fast through trees. Maybe that was what they mainly did, and walking was a secondary mode of movement.
Walking around with Night was fun to Elizabeth. Every time she tripped or stumbled (which was often) he would catch her in no time to prevent her from hurting herself. He seemed intrigued by all the different things around them. Almost as much as Elizabeth was, but not quite.
She was constantly wandering away from the path trying to look at the strange plants that surrounded them. Some were pointy and some were round. A few looked like they would try to swallow her up if she got too close. Night would usually have a small panic attack each time she got near one of those. It made her giggle each time because his facial expressions were hilarious to see.
Danger Will Robinson!
Night was bewildered at how he could sleep through such commotion. He was still a bit confused as to what she really saw and wondered if she had just been dreaming. He shook his head with the thought, knowing that this island was beyond what one could comprehend. He knew that he must trust the wee one and he can tell with the way she looked at him as she explained the whole event that she must be telling the truth.
Night gathered together some large leaves like he had used to make the bed and fashioned a sort of carrying bag. He instructed Liz to collect what she could that looked edible and he would carry it. One of the extra sticks they had gathered for the previous night was used to hoist it and Night stuck it over his shoulder like any hiker would do.
He bid farewell to his last barrel of rum, thanking it for helping him get ashore and apologizing that he could not down it as he’d liked too. He turned to Elizabeth and put his large hand on her shoulder. She looked at it as it encompassed most of the space. He smiled and motioned to her that they start their journey so as to get there as soon as possible. He didn’t want to be traveling in the midday heat and not knowing whether there was fresh water or not was a problem.
He let her lead the way into the tree line, stepping over large fallen logs and shades of purple and blue mosses covered. The ground was very soft yet sturdy enough to hold Night’s weight. They kept an eye out for anything that may be dangerous or too pretty not to be dangerous. Night knew that usually brightly colored things in nature were a sign of danger but here, that didn’t apply. Everything was brightly colored! This worried him because he thought that everything here was dangerous. He was especially worried after the event last night that he wasn’t awake enough to experience.
Poki Poki
Smiling happily, Elizabeth drifted off to sleep where she dreamed of small, brightly color animals that kept following her around. They were nice little guys, and kept offering her candy and cupcakes which she of course accepted. What a great dream this was!
Suddenly she woke up for no reason. Night was beginning to shift around next to her. It was obvious she was a much lighter sleeper than he was. It appeared he was beginning to wake up. Soft light was starting to shine on the pair, warming them up some as the sun rose.
Finally after a few more minutes of moving around and stretching, Night was fully awake, looking around blinking.
"This really is a pretty place.", Elizabeth said to the bleary eyed man next to her. "Let's find some food before we move on. We have a good ways to go until we get where we need to be."
At the odd look Night was giving her, Elizabeth stood up and began to explain everything that happened while he was sleeping. They walked around looking for more fruit and such as she spoke, giving her time to tell every bit of it.
Amazement
The lemur leaned on his staff a bit more and swished his tail towards her to hold in her hands to touch. It was like nothing she’s ever felt before, like the softest blanket she could ever imagine, almost like real silk itself.
Elizabeth’s eyes were very large at this point and she was so careful as to not pull or tug on his tail in her excitement. She wanted to jump up and down but she didn’t want to disturb Night or hurt the Lemur that saved her in any way.
The creature turned for the last time and hobbled away in a slow pace, which seemed like it’s usual pace. Elizabeth watched it disappear into the tree line and turned back to Night to check on him. Yep, still sleeping… she pursed her lips to the side and plopped herself back down. She nestled against Nights body once more to get some more rest. Liz was still worried that that Oil Horse thing would still come back for her but the Lemur said that he’d watch out for her. She was still hesitant to fall asleep but she knew she’d need her rest for the journey that was to come.
In Nights dreamy slumber he grabbed Liz by the waist and brought her closer to him, protecting her with his large frame from anything that may draw near. It was a habit of his when a woman was near to be protective, even in his sleep. Liz was a little taken back but she snuggled her head against him, welcoming the comfort and finally closed her eyes.
