I've heard quite a bit of debate among otakus as to whether Avatar: The last Airbender, is really anime or not. Well, I've seen the first dozen or so episodes, and my sibs are buying the videos, even my parents are getting into it, so I wanted to express my opinion on the matter.
So, here's my opinion: Does it really matter that much?
Seriously, it's NOT Japanese and to be honest, it doesn't look quite like the Japanese stuff either, but it looks close, its fun, it's theme is loaded with the same themes we've loved in our favorite anime shows. It may never be ranked among the most over-watched and loved shows like Naruto, but perhaps it can bridge the gap between "cartoons" and quality anime, and if can do that, then whats the problem?
If my people take baby steps, Spongebob yestersay, Avatar today, then maybe it will be Fruits Basket and D.N.Angel getting more attention and serious fans tommorow.
So, don't be surprised if people show up to cons covered in blue arrows, carrying stuffed monkeys and six-legged bison. Think of it as a simple step away from painting your face blue and munching apples in the years to come.
