A look at Bebop

Please be informed, this rant refers strictly to the anime Cowboy Bebop. I have not read the manga. Also, this was watched dubbed in English. So, now that we have established that, let’s get to the good stuff…

I’ve met a few new friends at college. One of which, upon finding out that I had never watched Cowboy Bebop, took me back to his place, and we spent a week on and off watching almost the entire series. I must say, I liked the concept, so I stuck with it till the end. However, there are some things in it that really ticked me off, I would like let off steam about.

First off all, all the women fall into one of two categories. The first is very independent, scantily clad, and slutty. The second is warm, loving, and dramatically helpless. Look, I know this is an anime for guys, but why go all the females have to be damsels in distress, or look like hookers? I admit no one is perfect, and I agree with that women to be less rational, and more emotional, then men, that’s just a fact of life. But that doesn’t mean we are so instinctive that we can’t take care of ourselves without acting totally self-absorbed.

Also, ALL the men in the show are shown as having enormous egos. Now, it’s a show about bounty hunters, cowboys of the future, so egos are expected, but it makes me laugh when they talk about “women and kids only thinking about themselves”.

Ok, now for the good news… A lot of the themes in the show were really interesting. The humor was well, REALLY funny. Some of it was a tad cheesy, but it wasn’t all gags, most of it was just good old sarcasm. Also, the comic relief, and my favorite character, Ed, wins the most spastic of all time award as far as I’m concerned. And, she’s adorable to boot! The language made me wince in a few places, but the overt sarcasm reminds me of home. LOL Take it from a Texan, real cowboys are hardly anything if not sarcastic.

Also, I do find some of the religious explorations interesting. I think their conclusions are wrong, but the thought process is intriguing.

Anyway, I won’t spoil the ending, but I will say, that it does actually END. It completes the story, going all the way to the end, without all the “and the lived happily ever after” stuff.

So, I think this really would appeal more to guys then to girls, and it can be rather rude at points, but it is funny. I give it an average, but very funny rating.
