Wouldn't it be nice to think about absolutely nothing for a while, have a lot of random pieces of unrelated drama spoon-fed to you, and call in a cultural investigations project? Great, because I have just the anime for you!
Azumanga Daioh is incredably straight-forward. I've watched the first dozen or so episodes, and it doesn't pretend to be anything its not. Its about the daily life of high-school girls and thier teachers. There is no evil scheme, no sinister plot, no hero, no super-powers, no cross-dressing, and no love interests. Its just real people trying to get through life, and dealing with the wacky wonderful wierd little problems and steriotypes everyday. Even the manga (which I have skimmed through) is incredably blocky and simple, but incredably funny and easy to relate to.
Now, each girl in this anime is unique, and its hard to pick a favorite. But they all come together to creat one "what the?" moment after another in ways only teenage girls can.
The teachers are no better, one being the perfect, responsable adult, one being her super-competative but typically lazy sister, and one being the school pervert (yea, he'd never get hired in America).
Now, why did I call this epic randomness? Well... becuuse if we all can admit it, thats what high school is. There is one entire episode about the wierd dreams these girls have. one about what teachers do over the summer, one about random cat attacks, and so on. Even though the characters are all basically steriotypes, I cann look at them and say "Yea, I knew her in high school, yea I've met him, wait, I WAS her..." and so forth.
So, here's a pat on the back to all of us who survived high school, and a warm hug for those of you still trying. Either way, I think you'll find this anime entertaining.
