Beat to Death Angel (I don’t know its proper Japanese name, sorry. It sounds way cooler). The name sounded very interesting when they said it in anime club. And the basic plot, sounded cute, so I voted for it. I regretted that the next week when I had to sit through an hours’ worth of its mind-numbing stupidity.
The main idea is that this guy really messes up the world as an adult (I won’t say how) so an angel is sent to kill him in his youth. But, she falls in love with him, and decides if she can make his lazy and lecherous, that he won’t become the evil genius that messes things up. So, she moves in with him and spends most of her time trying to turn him into a bum. However, she is still a death angel, and prone to violence, so whenever this poor kid ticks her off (which happens many times per episode) she kills him with a mallet, then instantly feeling sorry, heals him again.
Do you see the problems yet? If you do, great, if you don’t, I’m going to vent about them anyway, so don’t worry. First of all, this angel is retarded. Falling for a middle-school kid does not seem very angel-y. And what kind of angel tries to turn a guy into a lazy bum, even for the good of humanity? What kind of girl wants a lazy bum, middle-schooler who isn’t even into for a boyfriend!?! This angel has severe ego issues!
To make it much worse, they throw in gags that are useless, and don’t make sense. For instance, halos are sharp, and removing them gives angels severe diarrhea. These, and other insane little gimmicks are what drives most of the action. Once you realize what is going on, the action is predictable and gets dull incredibly fast. It’s all gags, and no real story-line, which wouldn’t be so bad, if the gags weren’t so lame.
To top off the lameness, they use excessive blood and gore, gushing from the body of the helpless young man for laughs. Like, it MIGHT be funny the first couple of time, but after you see a geyser of blood gush from his mangled body five or more times in thirty minutes, it just gets gross.
Usually, I try to call attention to good shows, but I felt obligated to warn the masses away from this atrocity. It’s a dark mark in the face of the anime kingdom.
