A Few Thoughts on Death Note

I had heard a lot about this show, and several people recommended it to me. So, I looked it up.
Now, I am only on episode four, since school has been crazy, and real life keeps distracting me. (hehe) But I have seen enough to form an opinion.
The show, in general the show gives a very intriguing look at society and psychology. Also, themes such as justice and responsibility are shown in ways I find unique and fascinating. Unlike traditional shows, there really is now “good guy” here. Our main character, Light, who might be called the “hero” is an egotistical, over-intellectual with delusions of grandeur. He goes on and on about the perfect world he will rule over, and keeps putting himself in a god-like position, when he is really too dumb to see his own flaws and the trouble he is creating. His ego also makes him somewhat rash when he is challenged, which leads to bigger mistakes. This ego also seems to fuel a paranoia, which exaggerates his mistakes.
The man standing opposite Light, and creating the much of the conflict, is known simply as L. L is so much like Light, they are nearly the same person. He is also egotistical and plotting and does what he does in the name of “justice”. The only main difference I can see, is that while Light tries to create a utopia, L is simply enjoying the mental challenge of finding Light.
Pretty much, the only character not being manipulated by these two forces, is Ryuk, the demon who is rather stuck following Light around. He adds his commentary and occasional hints, and is sometimes used to introduce information that deepens or furthers the plot. He is very much the Loki-like figure and seems to enjoy the chaos he originally helped create.
Now, again, if you can see this show for what it is, a display of deterioration and decay on various levels, both personal and societal, ( a subtle warning of sorts) then it is a good, entertaining, and thought provoking show. But, don’t look for heroes, or a clear cut definition of right and wrong here. This show is more to make you ask questions, than to provide you with answers.
It is really good, for what it is, simply do not take it for what it is not. Men do not become gods, and spirits do not play with our world out of boredom. This show makes light of some serious matters, and we should take care to keep everything in perspective.
