Visitors to Las Vegas spent nearly 80% more year-on-year in 2002, according to a survey released by Las Vegas' QMark Research & Polling on Jan. 27.
According to the survey, visitors spent an average of about $844 last year, up from about $469 in 2001. The largest percentage (33%) of visitors spent $251 to $500 on travel, while 29% spent up to $1,000 and 19% more.
About 94% of visitors gambled downtown, down from 96% in 2001 but down in 2000. In 2002, about 72% ate at high-end restaurants, up sharply from 25% in 2001 but down in 2000.
About 65% shopped last year, compared to 68% in 2001 and 67% in 2000. And about 62% watched showroom entertainment in 2002, a significant increase from 34% in 2001 and 56% in 2000.
In addition, 89% of respondents said they were "very likely" to return to Las Vegas within the next two years. For the overall experience, 47% in 2001 and 60% in the previous year rated it "very good." Most travelers (65%) said they prepared for a solo trip last year, with 10% buying a full travel package and 24% buying transportation and hotel packages but other items themselves. QMark conducted individual interviews with more than 600 Las Vegas visitors from various strip and downtown areas from October through December. Respondents stayed in town for at least two nights.
The results showed that visitors spent an average of about $700 on food, drinks, performances, tourism, shopping, transportation, and hotel stays over three nights, compared to a 2001 visitor survey by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Association, a top Las Vegas tourism organization, and $85.34 on non-discounts

According to the survey, the largest proportion of visitors who gambled (30% in 2001) said they spent at least $600 on gambling. In the survey, 86% said they gambled in Las Vegas in 2001, up from 85% in 2000 but down from 89% in 1997.
