Of Life, Love and the Journey to Maturity

Episode 2 comes and gives us the lay of the land.
Magical girls are created from wishes, literally. Kyubee, our mascot, grants girls one wish, any wish, all for the price of becoming a magical girl and fight the witches that plague human emotions. There was a small caveat to all this. The life of a magical girl is not one of sugar plums and fairies. It is one of life and death.

The rest of the episode plays out in usual fashion of slice of life/school girl anime style. Well, that is if you exclude the witch hunt at the end.
Madoka and her friend Sayaka follow their “mentor” Mami on one of her hunts for a witch, bringing us back to the LSD world of the end of the first episode. Mami kicked ass, no two ways about it. And then she ends the battle with a cup of tea… Priceless. I was all for the two youngins becoming magical girls.

Sayaka with her crush on an injured friend and her desire to save him and Madoka wanting an outlet for the confidence she wishes she had. The wished were ready, all was in place for the next episode to be the one where it all starts. When the girls begin their journey to maturity.

It started alright. Just not in the way I thought it would.

Sayaka is torn between what it means to make her wish and to leave it be and Madoka is searching for the right words to let Mami know her decision. Homura, who now has shown herself to be highly obsessed with keeping Madoka from being a MG, confronts Mami again. She’ll do anything to stop it from happening.

Tragedy strikes and the hospital Sayaka’s crush is at becomes a witch’s feeding ground. This is where we see some of the extent of Sayaka’s love for this boy. Putting on a brave face and holding justice in her heart, she opts to stay by the witch’s seed while Madoka gets Mami.

Full of confidence, Mami enters the domain, ignoring Homura’s heartfelt warning. Madoka reveals to Mami her wish and make an oath to fight alongside the every lonely Mami. Mami gains a warmth and strength that she’s never felt since after her near death and wish.
As sappy as that could have been, I liked the shipping it was doing. Yuri FTW, right.

Wrong.

Any other day, I might have caught the hints, seen it coming, but I was enjoying the ride too much. And because of that, I was thrown from the car so to speak. Shit got real. Not just for our budding magical girls but for the audience as well
