Dull Eyes: The James- Claude Story...
Horror. Pain. Depression. These words are rare. You don’t expect to hear nor experience a moment in your life that describes these words. No one ever expect the worst case scenario to come to them so early. No one but me. Since the day I was born, I could sense it. I sensed the cold chill of death around me.
I could still remember that day. The day I was brought into this world. All I could see was people, people staring and smiling at me. Why were they smiling? The light was blinding and the surroundings were so unfamiliar. “Where am I? Who am I?” I thought, inquisitively. So many questions which could not be answered. “It’s a boy! Congrats Madam Shirley” a man dressed in a white cloth cheered as he congratulated a woman. The woman was blessed with such beauty. She had long, beautiful hair, which was pure black, with smooth brown skin; flawless. I knew this because I stroked her skin when the man gently placed me in her arms. As she embraced me, she spoke softly. “Hello, little guy” she whispered. “I am your mother. You are my child. I gave birth to you because I love you.” The man in white smiled and asked my so called “mother” what shall my name be. “A name? Well I was thinking about two names. One is James and the other is Claude. You don’t suppose I could join the two, do you?” mother questioned the man. “James- Claude… it doesn’t sound that bad” he answered. “Then James- Claude it is” she replied. Suddenly, she turned her head away from the man, facing me; directly into my eyes. What beautiful eyes you have, James- Claude. Your eyes are so full of life. They’re just like diamonds reflecting light from the sun. You have your father’s eyes. Yes, just like your father’s” she smiled.
After she said that, I felt a sudden chill. It was a horrible feeling. This feeling spoke to me; it called out death. I began to shiver. Mother and man- in- white didn’t seem to feel anything of the sort. They just stood there, smiling at me. Couldn’t they sense it? Mother finally noticed me shivering. “What’s the matter, little James- Claude? You’re Shivering! You must be cold. Come.” She embraced me tighter. I could feel her warmth from her body, yet I was still cold. I was frightened, so I began to cry. “There, there” mother comfort me. “It’s okay. Mama’s here with James- Claude now.” She began to sing a little tune. It was relaxing and pain- releasing. Mother’s soothing voice was like nothing I’ve heard before up to this very day. “The voice of an angel” I thought, and quickly began to fall asleep.
That day was the mark of when my life began. Now I wished that day never happened. Who never knew that life could be so painful now that 16 years have passed that unfaithful day? Ever since then, I’ve been getting that feeling a lot now. Oh how I HATE that feeling. I felt it just before Mama, sister, and grandfather died right before my very eyes. That’s right, I’m family-less now. It hurts to see the memories of their death in my dreams every other day. The memories are clear as ice; oh how I wish that I could forget them.
I was only six years of age when it happened; when my mama, sister, and grandfather died. Grandfather was the first to die, as expected. He was too old to begin with. We all expected him to die sooner or later. But still it was very strange. Before grandfather died, I felt that same cold and frightening chill from when I was born. It spoke to me just as before. It said death. Suddenly, I became sick. I threw up and then collapsed in my own vomit. By the time I woke up, I found out Grandfather died. My diamond eyes began to darken, becoming more lifeless.
Two months later, something else happened. According to the news whether case, there were no expectations of cold air on that day. My sister and I were skipping to the market to get mother things she needs to cook dinner. Sarah, my sister, had left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH), which was a serious heart disease. She was also 16 years of age. She suddenly dropped her purse, so she stopped to pick it up. As a watch my clumsy sister picks up her handbag, I felt it I felt the cold chill. It began to get colder and colder. It was so cold, I began to shiver. I dropped to knees with my hands around me. I threw up just as the last time and I began to feel sleepy. Sarah panicked. “James- Claude, are you okay?! James- Claude! What’s wrong?! No! James! Please hold on!” Sarah yelled in a worried tone. All I could see was her panicking in a faint vision. As my head dropped, my panicky sister finally lost it. Then something happened. She dropped to her knees while grasping her chest. Her face looked like she was in tremendous pain. She screamed as her eyes widen. Finally she plunged to the floor; Sarah was dead. I dropped as well, going into a deep, deep sleep. I watched my dearest sister die from a heart attack.
Mother’s death was the worst of all. Three months after Sarah’s death, came Mama’s terrible death. Mother was cooking in the kitchen while I sat lifelessly in the corner reading a book. My eyes have gotten darker form seeing my sister’s death. Mother was chopping bright orange carrots for tonight’s soup. She finally spoke. “The house sure is a mess, huh James- Claude?” she asked. I looked up and noticed that she was right. The house was a complete mess. Trash scattered on the floor and frames with pictures of deceased family members, broken. It was sad just to look at the surroundings of the place, so I looked down. “You know, they’re not really gone” she said, suddenly. “Sarah and Dad are still here in spirit. They’re watching over us from heaven now, James- Claude. Don’t you believe that is so?” I didn’t answer. “Let’s just move on with our lives. There is nothing we can do now. They would want us to move on in life. Right?” mother added on. She was right. I glanced at her. “Yes, mother.” I replied. “That’s better!” she smiled. “Now let’s see what else I can add to this soup.” She started to walk towards the refrigerator. Then suddenly I felt it. I sensed the cold chill. I panicked. “Why do I always get this feeling? This feeling… every time I get it… someone… DIES!” I thought. I panicked and panicked. Mother noticed me acting strangely. “James- Claude? What’s the matter?” she asked. She walked towards me with the knife in her hand. “James- Claude? James- Claude! Can you hear me?” Mother was worried now. She walked faster and faster. Now she was running. Worried about me, she never thought about the consequences of running in the house with a knife in her hand. Then, it happened. Mother slipped on a near by cloth, therefore dropping flat on her back and sending the knife flying in the air when it slipped out her hand. But what everyone knows is that what goes up must come down. The knife plummeted down, stabbing Mother in the chest; directly where her heart was. It was silent. Blood rush down from her chest and mouth. My eyes widen as I look at the lifeless body. “Mother? Mother?” I cried. There was not else I could do or say that would bring her back now. She was dead. That day, my eyes turned fully lifeless and dull.
Since that day, my life went downhill. It was hard to pay the mortgage now mother was gone. There were no jobs for six year olds! After I was kicked out my house, I lived on the street. I’ve became the homeless bums that I laughed at when I was little. The street took it easy on me when I was younger, but now that I am 16 years old, people would treat me harshly. Everyday I would go through torture and depression given from the heartless people walking on the street I live on. Every now and then I would sense the cold chill and the next day find out that someone died. I didn’t care though. I didn’t care for anyone. I didn’t even care for myself. But all of that changed when I met her.
A curious little girl came up to me one day. “Hey Mister!” she yelled right in front of me. “Mister! Hey Mister! Why do you smell so bad?” she asked with a little grin. I did not answer. “Mister, why is your clothes like that? And why is your hair so puffy?” Once again I did not answer. I raised my head. The girl looked deep into my eyes with the look of amazement. “Whoa! Hey Mister, what happened to your eyes? They’re so big and dark! Hey, do you know that Mister? So cool! Hey, Hey! Mister? Can you hear me? “Hey little girl, why do you ask so much unnecessary questions?” I finally asked her. “Oh, so you do talk!” she rejoiced. “Well to answer your question, here’s another question! Without questions, how do you expect to get answers?” she replied. “Well…” I stopped. It was a very intelligent question for a little girl. “Gott’cha there, huh? For a little girl, I sure am smart!” she said confidently. “Hey Mister, do you have a family?” she asked curiously. I hesitated. It’s been so long since I’ve thought about them. I dropped my head, looking on the ground. “Just as I thought, Mister! You’re homeless and family-less. Me too! Well not homeless though. I’ve got a pretty nice house up there in the hills. Hey! I got a great idea! Why don’t you come live with me, Mister?” the girl asked. I was shocked. I didn’t know what to say. What is a little girl doing asking a homeless guy if he wanted to live with her in a house? What would her parents say? “Hey little girl, where’s your parents? Don’t you think you should ask them first?” I asked. “Mister, don’t you listen? I said I was family-less like you. I don’t have a Mama or a Papa.” She snapped. “You should listen more often, Mister. Anyway, it’s okay for you to live with me! Besides, I always wanted an older brother.”
Months passed since that day. She learned my name and I learned hers. Her name was Sue. She became an orphan at the age of six, just like me. Her parents left an enormous amount of money for her, though. She’s been living alone ever since they died. She is now 10. Sue managed to live 4 years without anyone by her side. I thought it was amazing. She just thought it was business. “I had to make a living after all, right? No one would help me with anything so I had to be independent.” She would say this every time I mentioned it. I always thought she was hiding something, but soon I became to realize, she loved me enough to not keep away any secrets from me.
Although my life was now happy again, I still had dull eyes. Sue would mention them for time to time but I would just change the subject. I didn’t want to tell her the reason why they were like that. It would just get her worried. I thought about my family more often now. I even went to a woman that knew my mother to find out about her life before I was born. The woman said that she fell in love with a solider from the navy. “. He had the most beautiful eyes. They were like diamonds reflecting light from the sun” she said. “Your mother impregnated herself not before long. She was crushed when she heard that her baby was going to be a miscarriage. That’s why it was a shocker when you came out of her alive and healthy. She loved you so much. You should be happy that you’re alive.” There was nothing more I wanted to hear. I finally got it. I finally found out the reason why I got those cold chills. It was so clear to me now. I just wished I figured out sooner.
The reason why I got those death chills was very obvious now. It was Death. Since I cheated Death, he was furious. He followed me wherever I went and killed the people dearest to me when I was six. Just because I came out alive and healthy when it was suppose to be dead. He’s cursed me.
One night, while I was walking on the street with Sue, something happened. I felt the cold chill. I panicked as I began to shiver. “No… no… please… no!” I thought. Then I saw him. Death appeared out of no where, ready to take away the only thing close to me, Sue! “James- Claude, are you okay? You look Tro…” she wasn’t able to speak. She was being held in the air, choking. I understood now. I couldn’t see him before because of my eyes. My eyes were now dull and lifeless, and as legend is told, only the dead is able to see. “No! Please don’t take her! I beg of you! No… just… TAKE ME INSTEAD! Death stopped. He was shocked. No one had ever given up their life for another before. The cold chill changed into a warm feeling. And this time it spoke out something different. It called out: Life! Suddenly, Death disappeared into thin air, leaving Sue to fall. I caught her just in time. Sue opened her eyes and smiled in amazement. “James- Claude!” she said softly. “Your eyes… are beautiful! They’re just like diamonds!”
