Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm Review

My NUNS review starts by stating that the HD graphics make this a beautiful game. I don't think I've ever seen cell-shaded graphics this beautiful. Everything moves very fluidly and it truly feels like you are in the Anime itself when you are playing. Aside from the awesome boss battles, which are repeated more than needed, the story mode is rather boring. Mute characters all around leaves a lifeless sense to the village. I mean Ultimate Ninja 3 on the PS2 had townspeople with voices and the PS3 doesn't, Why not? The transitions between each story mission seems so poorly done. For example, you'd be running through the Forest of Pain and than you run into Orochimaru. "Oh No!" But wait a second, now you're back safely in the village, since the mission is over and some of the missions don't even make much sense. I'm training to learn the Rasengan and all that is asked of me is to run up a tree and fight Jiraiya? They could have come up with far more imaginative games that actually take you through the actual process, instead of placing a 1 size fits all label on the 2 existing mini-games in story mode, Not counting the boss battles. Although there's plenty of stuff to unlock such as Statues, Music and the New Dioramas, like from previous games within the UN series, there really isn't all that much to do after the story mode is done. There's Ultimate Mode, which is the story mode and there's also a Freeplay mode. A few good things were the inclusion of the option between Japanese and English dubs and an option to have the CPU fight each other, which I personally enjoy, so I can watch some classic Naruto battles or even just for "What If" matches. The gameplay controls feel pretty smooth and natural. It's very easy to pick up and it's great for all casual gamers. After the Ultimate mode is complete, all you're left with is Freeplay, which does get boring when you don't have your friends or brothers around to play with you when you get that multiplayer itch. Since there are less characters here that are playable (25) the lasting effect is slightly less than the other UN games in the series.

I give this game an 8 out of 10. I enjoyed this game a lot, but the lack of features was the only bad thing of note.
