Born in Rouen in the year 969, Matthieu is 1,042 years old. He has been through much in his time on earth. His parents were Gérard and Elise. His father worked hard to provide for the family, but when he was taken ill, and eventually died, Matthieu and his mother struggled, and she died soon after, when Matthieu was just 13.

By age 18, he had a wife, Emily, and a child on the way. Two years later, his wife and son, Isaac, were kidnapped by vampires. Matthieu left Rouen, spending two years searching the globe for them. He came across many vampires during his travels, but none could lead him to his family. Presuming them dead, he had all but given up hope, when he received a letter from his wife, telling him to meet her, so they could be reunited "for eternity". Upon arrival, he finds that his wife and child have not been murdered, but have become vampires. They intend to turn him, but he kills them out of self defence. He is then bitten by a member of their clan, and forced to become the thing he despises most.

Matthieu spends centuries tormented over what he has become. Drunk by the power he realises he posesses, he starts to enjoy being a creature of the night, committing atrocities against human beings. However, this soon passes, and he becomes acclimatised with the world again, and his place in it. He now sees his 'curse' as an opportunity to learn, and to explore and see as much of the world as he can.

He has discussed taking on a job at the NightLife Academy, so that he may pass on some of his knowledge to their students.
