Having changed into some more comfortable clothing - a grey t-shirt and darker sweatpants - Durant approached the school's sizeable gymnasium. Thinking to himself that he had better look the part now that he had been awarded the position of teacher, he took a whistle out of the supply room. Entering the gym, he took note of the students scattered about the room. He instructed them all to gather together, but still stood at some distance from them as he began.
"Students, in this class, I will be instructing you in the methods of advanced defence. As such, there is every chance that some of you may get hurt whilst practicing these techniques. It is also my intention to occassionally remove the lesson from the classroom, so that you may gain some experience in a real situation. But know that I will never intentionally put you in harm's way unless I am unquestionably confident in your individual ability to deal with it effectively. And, at all times, I will be present, to give you a relative degree of safety.
Now, let me introduce the first technique we will be working on. Don't worry, we will be starting small."
He turned, and walked to the side of the room, where there lay several basketballs. He picked one up, and weighed it in his hand, before launching it with all his might at the group of students. Several of them scattered as it rocketed through the air, others put up their hands to defend themselves. Durant rushed forward, catching the ball mere inches from one of their faces, and he lowered it slowly.
"You're going to need to be a lot faster than that," he smirked. He instructed them to get into pairs. One half of the pair was to throw the basketball as far as they could, while the other, starting from their side, rushed to catch it. He blew his whistle, and retreated to the side of the room to supervise.
