Chapter 1
The air was rigid and cool; sweat beaded on my brow. I could feel the small dagger I carried tremble slightly in my hands. I watched as my opponent fell limply to the ground blood escaping the wounds to his chest. My heart beat hastened as I heard my name being screamed. I turned around quickly and dashed towards the deafening sound. Another young man ran towards me, a grim smirk on his face. I stopped and gazed deeply into his eyes. He looked very young however I knew better. In this particular group of Soul Eaters, no one was as young as they looked.
I readjusted my stance preparing for a strike. He smiled widely, “So, you’re the next leader of the Romain Clan? I must say I am a little excited to fight the child prodigy of the fabled Romain Clan. I am a little disappointed I will probably end up killing you and Samuel will be very angry with me.” He lowered himself in an attack position, “But when will I ever get another chance to kill someone like you?”
I readied myself clutching tightly to my dagger. I inhaled deeply this was the first time I had encountered so many enemies at once. I could feel my strength dwindling. I have to continue I thought to myself I need to escape with Sebastian and the others, the sake of the village depends on it. I, as well as a few other skilled members of the Romain Clan, was sent on a mission to kill the Soul Eaters that were lurking around our village. My father had heard word of their hideout and sent us. I was picked because I was the strongest and the most skilled when it came to fighting and tracking. I had quickly developed my techniques as a child and had even acquired the Romain Clan’s secret ability. The others were chosen at random including my best friend growing up Alexander. There was a problem however, it seemed my younger brother followed us here and managed to get tangled up in the mess. He wasn't as skilled or prepared for a mission like this, to him it was life or death. I had to find him, I had to make sure he was safe. He was my number one priority as selfish as it sounded. The others were strong and fully aware of the situation. Sebastian was not, he was young and ignorant. He had to be found.
I hesitated for a moment before springing into action. I quickly darted towards the young man standing in front of me. He smiled widely and dashed towards me as well. He swung with his right arm and threw a small knife with his left. I avoided the weapon by shifting to the left sliding into a full circle behind him. My movements were so sudden he hardly had time to dodge my grasp as I reached for his throat. I stood there with my hand extended as he regained his composure several feet in front of me. I watched barely winded as he glared menacingly at me.
“I didn’t realize you were so proficient at the flower step. Had I not already been forewarned I’m sure you would have finished me off right then.”
I cocked one eyebrow questioningly “You know about flower step? Well.. you are in for a world of surprise if you thought that was it.” It was true I was much faster than I was revealing, but the fight was already taking a toll on me and I didn’t really want to use flower step. I sighed deeply to myself, it cannot be helped, this fight needs to end now.
I readied myself once more and attacked without warning. He dodged my first three strikes but struggled to counter the next seven. My arms moved quickly as I attacked punching, kicking and eventually slicing. In a matter of seconds my opponent knelt covered in blood. Thick sticky dust circled around us; his breathing grew heavy and choppy. Spouts of steam filled the air with each breath he took. He stood there, his red eyes piercing through me, anger flushed his face. He had blood dripping from the cuts on his upper arms and chest. By the look of it, he shouldn’t even be able to stand up.
I gently slid my knife into my side pocket and began to look around. The smell of blood was everywhere; I could hear my comrades fighting, some even moaning loudly with pain. My heart began to race as I realized we could be on the losing end of the battlefield. I pulled up the cover for my nose and mouth, not only to keep out the cold air but to prevent it from mixing with my breath. The condensation and steam created from the mixer could easily give away my position.
I heard a snicker from behind me. “Is this your first fight? You look like a frightened little rabbit. I can smell the fear swelling up inside of you.” He began to cough from the excursion of talking.
I pulled out a poison needle from my wrist holster and turned my head slowly towards him. “I am not scared. You are the one who should be, mocking someone who has the upper hand.” I inhaled and in a matter of three seconds I was behind him with the needle plunged deeply into his neck. He gasped loudly, not from the pain but from pure surprise. It wasn’t until then that I had fully moved as fast as I could. He turned his head to try to look at me. I kicked his back and watched him fall forward towards the ground. “It is not my first fight and you will be dead in less than a minute.”
His breathing slowed as the poison took effect. “Your brother…” There was a loud ear curdling scream as a small knife flew through the air and struck him in the back. I turned around startled and began to search for the culprit. My eyes flickered in the full darkness looking in every direction. I could not see nor hear anything other the sounds of my comrades.
My brother? My brother… what did he have to do with this? Why did that Soul Eater know who my brother was? His words echoed non-stop. I turned quickly and started back towards our meeting point. I could see the crumpled shells of Soul Eaters littering the ground. I stopped occasionally when I can across a fallen comrade. They were all dead.
As I approached the meeting point my heart skipped a beat. I could count three out of the ten members of my team. They were all covered in blood and mangled. I could see Stacy, Laurence and Miguel. I looked around frantically as I tried to find Sebastian. I turned hastily and headed back towards the hideout. I peered from side to side hoping to find him. Everything was growing quiet. There was a strange darkness in the air.
It was beginning to appear that we were victorious even with all of our casualties. There was no sight or smell of anymore Soul Eaters in the area. I grew more frantic as I looked for my brother. I heard a light moan coming from the trees to my right. I cut towards them sharply making sure to avoid hitting any. “Sebastian?!” I yelled out loudly hoping to hear a response. “Sebastian!”
“M-Micah?” I stopped abruptly and listened once more. “Micah behind you.” It was Sebastian's voice. I turned around with relief expecting to see him.
There was a sharp pain on my upper right arm, a slight burning tingling sensation soon took it’s place. I felt my body begin to grow limp, my eyes fluttered. I blinked and tried to steady myself. When I focused my eyes, there was a tall dark figure gazing at me with burning violet eyes. My breath caught for a moment as I pulled my arm away quickly from him. His stare pierced my soul; I felt a strange sensation run through me. I inhaled deeply and reached out fiercely with my mind. I grabbed ahold of his memories and began to shred them urgently. The faster I went the more pain I saw fill his eyes though he made no sound. I began to take the memories and bend them unwillingly until they shattered leaving small fragments to penetrate and haunt his thoughts.
He finally blinked and I was free from his gaze. I used flower step to avoid any further contact with him as I maneuvered around him to grab my brother. When I had Sebastian in my possession I ran as quickly as I could back to our formation. My feet began to drag as the burning sensation gradually consumed my body. I felt my hands growing limp; I struggled to keep ahold of my wounded sibling. I could hear a voice calling out to me. What was he saying? The words were muffled by the sound of my heavy pants as I ran for our lives. I closed my eyes and listened. What was he saying…what was he saying…
The weight of my brother proved to be too much as I fell motionlessly to the ground. I could feel the poison spreading vigorously through my veins. My breathing was choppy and my hands shook relentlessly. I looked over and saw my brother laying on the cold ground, blood trickling down his face. His eyes were closed and breathing even. He must have passed out from the exertion and the lack of adrenaline that had filled his body. I need to get up I need to save him I thought angrily to myself. Get up Micah… Get up… you need to get up. Tears welled up as I tried to force myself off the wintery ground. A sharp jagged pain coursed through me as the poison began to eat away my soul. I closed my eyes in an effort to escape my reality.
A sweet smell of lavender followed by an angelic voice seemed to penetrate the dark place I was entering. I tried to open my eyes but the effort seemed pointless. If this soul eater was going to kill me there was nothing I could do. No I thought I will save Sebastian if it’s the last thing I do. My eyes flew open as I forced myself to sit up. Shock set in me as my eyes met those of a beautiful young woman. Her stunning grey blue eyes danced in the moonlight. Her pale face was surrounded by thick jet black hair. Her smile was timid and divine. She wasn’t a soul eater.. she was too pure. “Wh-who are you?” My words were short and quiet.
“Micah,” She whispered, “you are dying.” Her eyes pierced my soul. I could feel her evaluating me, reading and judging me like I was a book. “But I can see that you do not want to.”
My hand shook with anger and pain. “Tsh…. I can’t die yet. I have to save my brother.” I could feel the poison working faster the more I moved around. It was true though. I would not let myself die until I knew Sebastian would be safe. I could feel her reading my soul once more. Anger being to flood in my as this stranger examined me. I reached out and grabbed her arm. Her warm bare skin surprised me at first in this weather. I quickly cast the thought aside and reached out with my mind. I seized her thoughts and her examination of myself and took her memories of it. My mouth dropped slightly as I realized what and who she was. Afraid of her wrath I let go and dropped my hand quickly on the cold hard ground.
Tears beaded at the corner of her eyes as she watched me with a strange emotion on her face. “You have the Romain Clan’s ability?” Her voice was a low whisper that chimed throughout the forest. She leaned in closer looking at me deeply with her memorizing grey eyes. “Do you really wish to live? Do you really intend to keep your brother safe?”
My mind began to race as I felt the last of my strength dwindling. “Y-yes.” I answered as I fell back limply. I was on the verge of death. My body was betraying me. I no longer had the ability to sit up. My time to depart this earth was upon me.
She leaned down further and whispered hesitantly in my ears. I could feel her soft hair fall carelessly over her shoulders and onto my face. The warmth of her breath tickled my numbing skin. “I want to be …” there was a strange melancholy tone in her words, “free.”
My eyes closed slightly and I nodded feeling the last ounce of energy escaping me. “Okay.” In a sudden stir of movement I felt her pull down the cover on my lower face; her cool soft lips press firmly on mine. She carefully parted my dying lips and began to inhale. I could feel a dim tingling sensation creep sluggishly through my veins. The numb warm feeling was dissipating. Deaths cold grip was beginning to loosen. A strange emotion stirred my heart as I realized I was slowly moving my arms towards the strange being standing in front of me. I wrapped my fingers in her hair and slowly placed my hands on either side of her face. It was my turn to give her what she wanted. I paused, “Y-you know what will happen if I die…” my words were beginning to get stronger.
She paused and looked at me sternly. “As long as you protect your brother.. you will not die.” She began to extract death’s grip once more.
