Daily Lives of High School Boys Review

Boys can be hilariously stupid. This anime takes advantage of that fact.

(Don't worry, they take advantage over girl's stupidity, too)

Plot Summary

This anime follows the daily lives of boys going to an all-boys high school on their shenanigans. Really, it's all in the title.

Story

Each episode is separated into a few, shorter segments, which works to its advantage to fit as many jokes in as possible. While there isn't much of an overarching story to speak of, the individual situations that they get in are usually both realistic and hilarious. It sometimes falls flat, but when they hit it, it's perfect.

8.2

Characters

The show features an extremely large cast, and somehow, through its simple yet interesting character designs, you manage to keep them all straight. While each character feels reasonably realistic, there is little character development to speak of.

7.4

Animation

The animation is rather uncomplicated. It can have some unique character designs, but other than that, it has nothing extravagant, it simply does what it needs to do.

7.2

Music

The opening is rather entertaining, and the ending is extremely catchy. However, the background tracks aren't memorable and add little to the anime.

7.3

Overall

This anime is a rather simple comedy. There isn't much past the comedy, as the characters, animation, and music are all of general quality. If you're just looking for something to laugh at, this would work, but if you're looking for anything dramatic or emotional, look somewhere else.

Seriously, though... I don't think I will ever get sick of that ending theme. *sings* Ba ba ba bari ari a ba ba ba ba bari ari a ba, ba ba ba bari ari ba bari ba ba

Also, this is actually my second favorite comedy. You'll find out my favorite comedy soon... For some reason I don't get that much into comedies.

Aku No Hana Review

Sometimes it's easy to judge an anime's quality. Great story, great animation, great. But sometimes there's an anime that seems to be terrible and incredible simultaneously. So watchers pick a side and then continue to try and force on why they're right. Today, I'm giving my take on an anime like that - here's my review of Aku no Hana.

Plot Summary

Takao Kusaga is a blank slate, with his only defining characteristic being his love of a book by Charles Baudelaire called The Flowers of Evil. This all changes one day when he impulsively steals Naneko Saeki's, his crush's, gym clothes. He is then approached by a girl named Nakamura Sawa, who saw what he had done, and gives him a "contract" under the threat of revealing his sin to the school.

Story

Well, let's lather then shave, shall we? First off, this anime is disturbing, but not in the classically thought-of way. There is no gore or torture, it's more... psychologically disturbing. This really works towards it.

Also, there are a few absolutely brilliant moments. Ones that completely capture your attention and make you realize the terrible beauty of it all.

However, on the negative side, the pacing is terrible. At times characters will spend up to five minutes or more just... walking. While some of this makes sense, that you need a little bit of time to absorb what had just happened, five minutes is ridiculous.

7.4

Characters

This is where the anime gets to shine. The characters all have their different personalities, different thoughts, and different paths. They manage to be interesting all throughout the anime, especially in the case Nakamura Sawa. So many questions surround her that it's impossible ignore her.

8.8

Animation

The first thing you'll notice about this anime is their decision to rotoscope it. This works both towards them and against them. Because of it the movements are all fluid, and the realism in the character's movements as well as the backgrounds definitely add to the feel of the anime.

However, the animation is also... really simple to the point of being ugly. While it could be argued that this adds somewhat to the pure grittiness of the anime, the simple fact of the matter is ugly is ugly, and will more than likely be taking more away from the anime than it adds to it.

6.4

Music

The openings of this anime do something cool - there's four openings over the course of the anime, each taking a song put into the perspective of one of the three main characters, with the final one in the point of view from the three as a whole. However, the openings ultimately end up being merely passable.

The ending is... off. Odd. Not really a song, but still kind of is... and while it's initially completely creepy, it does grow on you over time. ...A lot of time.

As for the background tracks, I found them quite lackluster.

7.2

Overall

While this anime does have some major flaws, such as unattractive rotoscoping and terrible pacing, if you're willing to overlook those flaws you'll find a unique anime definitely worth your watch.

Seriously, though. Nakumura Sawa. I really love that character.

Ping Pong The Animation Review

Plot Summary

Smile and Peco are best friends and are the best ping pong players in their school's club. However, they each have their differences in their lives and in their struggles to discover who they are and what they want out of life and out of the game ping pong.

Story

The story is well done. It moves decently fluidly and manages to make you feel a little emotional. However, there are a few slow-moving moments, a few confusing moments, and overall there is little to make it stand out from other anime.

7.5

Characters

The characters are absolutely incredible. Throughout the anime it focuses on different characters, each with their goals and dreams and develops them extremely well throughout the anime. There is not a single character left undeveloped.

9.1

Animation

The animation is very unique compared to most anime. It wouldn't be considered beautiful by conventional standards, but its unique style makes it beautiful in its own way. It manages to express a lot while saying a little However, because of the drastic change from what is the norm within the realms of anime, it may turn quite a few away from it.

8.4

Music

Both the openings and endings were great, entertaining and fit well with the anime.

The background music is also beautiful, having a few standout moments. However, it doesn't stand out quite enough to become completely significant.

8.6

Overall

Ping Pong The Animation is amazing. There simply is no denying it. If you are willing to get around the animation style barrier, you are in for a real treat.

If you want a more emotional anime relating to sports and the decisions one has to make in their life, this anime would work perfectly.

Aku no Hana

If it's the unique animation that brought you in, and you still want something a little dramatic, this anime would also be fine.

Other

Seriously, this anime is one of my favorites. I just tend to forget it often.

Tokyo Ghoul Review

Plot Summary

Ken Kaneki is living in otherwise ordinary world full of ghouls, human-like creatures that can only survive on human blood and flesh. Kaneki falls for one and goes on a date with her, only to discover she is in actually a ghoul. She tries to attack him, but an accident happens instead and her organs are transferred into his body. He now must live with being half-ghoul while learning about the ghoul community and how in this world he must protect himself and his friends.

Story

The story sets up pretty will, with the first few episodes being pretty intense and immediately catches the watcher's eye. From then on, while it does have a few great moments, the quality of the storytelling starts to run along the lines of ordinary, but goes in a serious downward spiral in the end.

5.4

Characters

The anime has a diverse cast full of likeable characters. However, it is so crammed that characters will appear for an episode and will be hardly seen or mentioned again, and this makes it hard to develop any characters well.

6.2

Animation

The animation, for the most part, was up to par with current anime. Some scenes were absolutely beautiful and intense. However, there is a certain amount of censored scenes that take away greatly from the anime.

7.2

Music

The opening is absolutely incredible, and while the first ending wasn't all to great, the second was enjoyable.

While the background OSTs can be considered okay in their own right, they never fully contributed to the anime and thus it cannot be said that they reached their full potential.

8.2

Overall

While there are some things in Tokyo Ghoul that are entertaining to watch, it cannot be considered an incredible anime by any means.

Half Moon

Other

They did do something with a character that I haven't seen before, though. With Kureo Mado, they make you absolutely hate him, then they kill him off, then they make you like him after he's dead. ...Dang you, Pierrot!

Also, I really didn't like that ending. It reminded me of a combination of the endings of Neon Genesis Evangelion and Soul Eater - a deep, philosophical look into the main character's mind that doesn't quite make sense before the main character finds a deus ex machina-like power they use to quickly and easily kill the main antagonist.

Also, those torture scenes... *shudder* That's the stuff of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni right there, that is!
