As I walked fowards through the brush, I caught sight of two fawns and a white rabbit. I looked at them and they looked back.
"A nobody," the first fawn said looking at me sharply.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" the second fawn asked.
The lady rabbit didn't look at me but curled up on the grass.
"I'm Tamex," I said taking a bow....or rather trying to. "I'm just a wanderer and happened to end up here. May I ask who you two are? I can tell that you two are nobodies as well....and the rabbit......"
The two fawns looked at me, then at each other, and the back at me.
"I am Aidex," the first said calmly.
"And I am Xyta," the second continued. "And she is Minx."
"Well hello then m'ladies," I said taking another bow. "It is very nice to meet you both. May I ask why you are here?"
"We are seeking refuge......from other nobodies," Aidex said calmly.
"Yes.....we are here to be at peace for a bit...." Xyta continued. "Now tell us. Why are you here?"
"Ah hahahahah well I just kind of ended up here...." I laughed.
Both fawns looked taken back by me, but I just stood straight again and smiled. As I rubbed the back of my head, I found that my bandanna was still there. I laughed a bit.
"So then you are just a wanderer? It seems way too coincidental to be so," Lady Aidex started. "We just left a bad situation, and now another nobody has found us.....You are not lying are you Tamex?"
I looked at them both and then shook my head. Both fawns seemed to sigh a bit, and the rabbit cried softly. I hopped over to her quietly.
"What is wrong m'lady?" I asked.
Lady Minx looked up at me in a terrified manner.
"I don't want it....I don't want it...." she cried quietly.
"She's been like that for a while," Lady Xyta commented her voice reflecting a strange harshness.
"What don't you want hun?" I asked.
She wouldn't answer, and I began to wonder if something was medically wrong with her. I closed my eyes and started examining her cells, but I found something strange.....they were different.......not like the ice like Lady RaXi's but a completely different type of cell.....it astounded me. A completely different type of cell.....it preforms the same function....but it's entirely different.....what is this child?
I wanted to know a bit more, but this wasn't the time. I looked for damages, but there was nothing needing to be healed. I sighed and sat beside her. Lady Xyta and Lady Aidex lay down, but remained silent. All that could be heard in the Thicket was the occasional sound of birds.
After a time, I moved a bit closer to Minx, but she neither protested no moved away. When we were were shoulder to shoulder, Minx laid down on my shoulder and was asleep.
All the time, a strange thought kept coming to mind. What is this child?
I felt the fogginess of a memory coming to light. When Mat was still in school.......
"Students today we have a guest coming. His name is Verex. He is here to lecture on Human Strength. Everyone on your best behavior or I'll send you to the pits of despair ok? good," the teacher said some what blandly.
It was just another day at the Academy, but apparently a nobody was coming to lecture.....Great......
I put my head on my desk and prepared for a nap. I hadn't gotten once as good as the time Dr. Eicris lectured, but I was hoping for a really good one. As this Verex guy came in we all could instantly tell he was a nobody. A few of the students laughed nervously.
"Thank you all for having me," Verex said calmly. "Now then, I have been made aware that most of you will become researchers relatively soon, and I hope to show you a new feild of study. It is called the Extent of Human Strength. Now then who can tell me what I mean by that?"
Yep....nap time........but this guy did sound pretty interesting in his own right....I had to give him kudo points for that.
A few brave souls who thought they could answer raised their hands, and Verex called on each of them.
"Do you mean the limit humanity has on their muscular strength?" Taylor's voice asked.
"Partly, next?"
"Do you mean the strength of the heart to resist nobodies?" another voice from the back of the classroom asked.
"No," Verex answered. "Come now...anyone?"
"You mean the strength of the connection between DNA and magic," I said just as blandly as the teacher had talked about Verex. My head was still on the desk, but I was sure they could hear me through the desk.
"Each of us have different levels of connection, and that is the basis of other magic users. Researchers have been trying to maximize this connection for years, but it seems unchangeable because it is written into the very DNA of people. It is the Extent of Human Strength in comparison with their DNA or as you called it the Extent of Human Strength. It's mean of you to not have used the last part."
A silence erupted after that. The teacher laughed nervously. I guess he feared for his job. Couldn't blame him. I was about to go back to sleep when I heard Verex start up again.
"Very good," he started. "What is your name?"
"Mat," I answered.
"And where did you learn the proper definition of Human Strength?" Verex asked.
"From a book," I answered.
At this some students laughed nervously again. I sighed and wondered if this guy was going to let me take a nap or if I was going to have to explain further."
"Ok, then tell me Mat, what if I told you, you could change the level of Human Strength?" Verex asked wryly.
"I'd say that either you destroyed the genetic code or made your own with a mix of amino acids and a hell of a lot of magic," I answered.
"Very good," Verex said. "You've even thought it through.....but then if I made my own genetic code what about the cell?"
"The cell wouldn't be able to read the code due to the fluctuation of magic and therefore would die. You would have to create your own cell that could read the genetic code you made. It's a pretty simple process when it comes down to it. The only problem is linking the DNA with enough magic to exstend human potential," I said.
"Very good," Verex continued.......
The memory faded, and I found that I had nearly gone to sleep. Lady Aidex and Lady Xyta were still awake, but they appeared asleep. I looked at the lady rabbit sleeping on one side of my arm.
"Verex....." I said a loud. "Wonder where he is now heh......"
