Gains and Losses

"And they all point to Verex's reaserch about human strength. Don't lie to me Verex, I have Mat's mind and the facts that go along with it. You were studying to re-categorize DNA and magical bonds to make the strongest human. And Minx's cells are far different from yours and mine. I have a feeling that you had to make a whole new type of cell in order to keep Minx's DNA in line. What do you say to this Verex?"

Verex gave me a sideways glance.

"I'd say either you've been trying to find me to confirm this yourself because you don't really have the fact straight or you have lost all of Mat's knowledge and are running on imagination," he finally answered.

"Liar," I answered. "You know I'm right. What are you hiding Verex?"

"I don't ever remember making the 'perfect' so then I haven't done it," Verex answered.

I sighed and messed with my bandanna. I was getting nowhere fast and all I wanted were a few answers. After a while the silence between us was broken my Minx's shaking.

"Verex....I....I'm sorry I....treated you like that before...." Minx said quietly.

I cocked my head to the side wondering if Lady Minx was opening another can of worms or just trying to chase after the last ones.

"The 'mine' thing?" Verex asked.

Minx nodded.

"It's fine," he answered back.

"So what are you doing here Verex?" I asked.

"I could ask you the same," Verex answered.

"I'm here to see the sights," I answered. "I'm guessing you're here for more though...."

"Xerebus sent me here," Verex answered. "To find something I still haven't found."

"Ah," I answered. "And Xerebus is the main boss-dude of your Organization?"

"Ya," Minx said before Verex answered. "And he's a bloody liar."

"Don't talk that way in Britain," I answered. "Bloody isn't a good word to use around here." I snickered for a moment remembering one of the teachers at the academy who had all but kicked my out of school when I said I was all bloody and she took the wrong connotation.

"And it looks like I'm not going to find it," Verex answered.

"Well then don't worry about it," I answered back. "Sometimes stuff has a habit of coming back to you in the end......."

I let go of Minx's hand and took a step towards the main wreckage. As I walked farther into it, I found where my old room....or rather Mat's old room if it was still standing....there was nothing there now except driftwood and damage. Suddenly my eyes caught a glass orb under the mass of heavy wood. I pushed the wood off it and picket it up. I looked at it and threw it at Verex who took it from the air as if he had been handed it.

"Remember what those are for?" I asked.

"I remember what they were meant to be used for," he answered. "They're magic containers."

"Hah let me rephrase that do you remember what they were used for?"

Verex gave me an eye, but I just laughed and shot a bit of water at it. The orb absorbed it because it absorbed anything and in a second it exploded in Verex's hand. He was left all wet. I laughed and he just rolled his eyes. Minx looked from me to him and laughed too.

"Anyways," Verex said calmly. "I'm going to go now. Later Mat. I'm pretty sure I'll see you again."

"Later Professor," I answered. "Don't break any test tubes."

Verex smirked and opened a portal. Minx ran over to me through the wreckage, and as I watched, Verex left the world. I sighed for a moment and then continued to go through the wreckage.

"I have a feeling I'll be seeing him again...." I said moving a few more pieces of wood this way and that.
