Okies, so as most of you have probably figured out, I'm an anime/manga sort of chick. I usually don't read many webcomics simply because I either a) don't know about them, or b) can't be buggered to read 'em.
But as with all cases, there are exceptions. For me, it's Trace. Trace is this Korean webcomic that I once stumbled across on mangafox and I must say-I LOVE it. Seriously. It's one of them psychological/holy crap I so saw that coming but still HOLY CRAP kinda stories.
Basically, the plot takes place in South Korea and there are two types of beings: your average Joe, and beings called "Troubles." These "Troubles" are essentially the monster of the story. They attack humans, cause the world to go into chaos, the usual. And as with any good monster-eats-human story, you need to have the ones who can defeat them. Here is where the Traces come in. “Traces” are, in a nutshell, mutants. They are humans who have gained supernatural abilities, ranging from super speed/strength to firing bullets from their fingers. It may seem that these Traces are the allies of justice, but that is not always the case. Some Traces exploit their powers, the overall result being that Traces are shunned from society, regardless of the good they may do.
There are two main plots that make up the webcomic. The first one revolves around a boy named Sa Ghang Gwon who was born as a Trace, and was therefore abandoned by his parents. After being taken in by a young girl and her father he tries to live a life of a normal human, hiding his true self from both of his caretakers. This works for a while up until he hits high school where his secret is found and Sa Ghang Gwon is forced to leave the family and home he found.
The second story revolves around the man Kim Yun Seong, your average married man. Living a happy life with his loving wife and daughter, all was well for Seong. That is, until he began to turn into a Trace. His wife and daughter are then taken away from him and end up being use as experiments. This tale follows him trying to seek his revenge as well as his running into several other fellow Traces, eventually forming the group K4.
Of course there is much more to the webcomic than these two-these are just the main plots. Surrounding each one is a subplot that is just as intricate and gripping as the mother-plots. Overall, this is a webcomic that really grasps me by the heart. Unlike most mangas that I read, there isn’t anything sappy or cheesy-yet it’s not totally psychotic. It has moments where you feel for the characters, yet has moments that make you go “WTF mate?” So if you’re in a serious mood, but you don’t want any clichéd moments or the annoying damsel in distress, then I highly recommend this. Another bonus is that it is ALL IN COLOR ^.^ However, this is a webcomic, so make sure you scroll all the way down to the end of the page. But seriously-this is epic. I can only pray that somehow it gets turned into an anime. It would probably fall under the same level of epicness as Code Geass for me. And if anyone knows me, they know I consider Code Geass to be my favorite anime of all time. So for me to say that Trace is just as good means something. So go. Now. Read. What the hell are you doing here?! GO!!
Till next time~
