Cold Hearted

Nino walked into the school with his hands in his pockets and his sunglasses shielding his eyes from the last dying rays of the sun. As she stepped up the stairs and walked into the school, he instantly felt tense than before. There was a high amount of spiritual pressure that seemed to be drowning the area. Shaking his head to himself, Nino muttered a few words under his breath before proceeding farther into the school. The halls were cleared already probably due to the belief that the ghosts would harm the students, but it only seemed to make the dark walking smoker somewhat more alive than before. This was his territory of understanding, and he relished it with a sense of dark glee that at some distance would resemble normal happiness.

As he walked through the quiet halls of the school, Nino breathed little and said nothing. Draining away all the emotions that had once been present in him, he began to walk the halls feeling the spiritual pressure completely and fully. However, as he walked, there was a part of him that always lost control of his own regular sight, and in half a second, he had brushed past someone causing them to slam into a locker.

Idiots…. Nino thought to himself as he continued to walk. They should get out of my way when I am walking. However, his eyes did track the boy as Nino continued walking on for the short amount of time that they boy remained in view. Spiritual pressure…..Nino thought to himself somewhat disgusted by his find. He’s probably a weak medium at best… They always summon up even the weakest to try and get rid of ghosts… they’re useless.

“Ow…” the boy groaned as he pushed himself off the wall. Nino said nothing for a solid second and continued walking.

“Watch yourself, kid,” Nino finished after another second of thought. “Or you’re gonna end up dead.” This last part was so quiet that no one not even the ghosts could hear it, and with that, Nino continued to walk on.

As the lights shut off, Nino felt a sudden curl on his lips. The spirits would be more apt to come out and explain themselves in the dark rather than with all of the lights on. Half thanking whoever had shut the lights off, Nino continued down the now almost pitch black hallway. Suddenly, something moved not far off in the shadows, Nino froze in mid step and turned his head sharply to it.

A white vague image of a cat was sitting not far off in the shadow with its head cocked to one side and its tail swishing. For a split second, Nino felt sudden agitated that someone had killed within the grounds of the school, but after a moment, he drained his emotions again and just stared at it calmly. The ghost cat continued to stare at him but made no approach.

“And you are?” Nino asked looking at the cat with a calm complacent look. The cat just stared back for a full second before meowing at him.

“Ah,” Nino answered.

“Shadow! Shadow where are you!” a voice called causing the cat to rise. Nino turned his head in a calm manner as he saw the ghost of what appeared to be a nine year old girl running up and quickly stepping back as she realized that Nino’s eyes were following her every movement.

“Can… can you see me?” the ghost asked still clinging to the cat that she had picked up.

“Yes, and I can hear you as well,” Nino answered back with a calm but cold manner. “Are you the one who has been haunting this school?” The edge in his voice caused the ghost girl to squeal and shake her head violently.

“There are a lot of us here! And none of us would do such a thing! We just want to be happy like everyone else….” She answered looking down at the ghost cat now in her arms.

Nino stepped forwards and carefully put a hand on the girl’s shoulder. The girl jumped for a moment at being touched by this mortal, and yet after a moment, she started to relax.

“Are… are you a ghost too?” the girl asked somewhat confused by the fact that Nino could touch her form.

“No…” Nino answered in a cold form that seemed to frighten the ghost girl as she sudden started to tremble a bit. “But your group needs to rest in peace and stop wandering around. It is not good to scare the living.”

“I… I’m sorry…” the little girl said looking down and trying her best to avoid Nino’s sharp eye. “I didn’t do anything wrong though…”

“You don’t even understand,” Nino answered back as his voice began to grow in caustic value. “Ghosts belong to a realm that is not this one. You must move on.”

“I… I don’t want to!” the girl cried back at him, but sudden she froze, and her eyes widened.

Nino stood with his arm elongated and his gun pointed straight at the head of the girl’s pale form. She seemed to take on a fading complexion, but before she could get away, Nino pulled the trigger. With a sudden poof, the girl appeared solid for a second along with the cat but then returned to the transient form and started to turn into a white powder.

“I don’t wanna move on! I don’t wanan die!” the girl cried out suddenly as she began to fade against her will.

“You are already dead,” Nino answered back. “I hope you find peace on the other side.”

The girl seemed to sudden tighten but then relaxed.

“Bye…” the girl said in a calmer tone, and with that, she and her cat had sudden faded into nothingness.

Nino stood there in the quiet hall for a few more seconds before he turned and started walking again. Taking out a cigarette, he began to smoke a bit and let out a breath in a stone faced manner. As he continued down the hallway, Nino kept his eyes open for the ghosts and took each of them that he met down without mercy. He felt nothing towards forcing the spirits to leave their home and head into a place that he knew nothing of himself, and yet there was a part of Nino that was starting to grow tired of all the ghosts.

Did this school burn down or something? Nino thought to himself as he continued to walk. There are so many ghosts that the spiritual pressure is giving me a sick feeling. Suddenly, Nino felt the spiritual pressure increase, and he realized that there were others in the building causing much of the spiritual energy to be swirled. Damn kids…Nino thought to himself as he pulled out a flashlight. Need to shoo them out before I can get back to work.

As he continued walking, Nino took a flashlight out of his pocket and turned it on. Ghosts were easy to find and see in the dark, and yet real bodies weren’t. He turned and started his way up the stairs. However, just as he looked up, Nino found that a kid was staring back down into the light of his flashlight. The kid seemed to be wincing at the light, and Nino silently turned the flashlight off.

“Sorry kid.” Nino said with a calm complacent manner. He was not fond of people interrupting his work, and from the looks of it, this kid was too young to know anything really. However, there was reason for apology on the factor of blinding him. Nino let a breath out after his words were finished.

“Who are you?” the boy asked after trying to block the beam of light that was already generated away from him.

“Nino and yours?” Nino answered with as few words as there was needed to convey his meaning. On the whole, Nino actually preferred to interrogate ghosts more than talk to people.

“I’m Ryuu,” the boy answered back after a moment of staring at Nino.

In that half second, Nino understood that the boy had been judging on the appearances that Nino was carrying himself with, and yet also in that half second, Nino dropped this thought.

“You should leave, kid,” Nino said sharply. “This isn’t a playground.”

“Hey…. There’s some kind of…” Ryuu said, and Nino nodded.

“Yes, we both have spiritual pressure. That is obvious,” Nino answered back, and before Ryuu could say anymore, Nino was already side stepping him around the stairs.

“Hey wait a minute!” Ryuu said quickly, but Nino ignored him completely.

“I suggest you leave, kid,” Nino repeated. “Ghosts aren’t for people that can’t even control their spiritual power.”

“I have control,” Ryuu persisted, and Nino could see a tinge of agitation from his last comment.

“You’re spiritual energy is a torrent of whips,” Nino answered back coldly and brushed sharply past Ryuu as he continued up the stairs.
