Burnt her insides out of course.’ This is one of the first things the mysterious inspector Goole says as her sits down in the Birling household. The play ‘an inspector calls’ has many dramatic parts in it just like the quote above. The play is about a poor working class woman that commits a tragic suicide. The whole of the Birling family, each have a twisted secret, involved in her death.
Titanic is used as a metaphor in the play. Just as titanic sunk in 1912 so did the Edwardian society. Titanic and the Edwardian society are similar because they both have 3 layers upper middle and working class. During the 1900s people were treated differently depending on what class they were. Working class were treated with very little respect while upper class were treated with a lot of respect.
Priestly wrote the play in 1945, the play was set in 1912. The play was written just after WWII and WWI, of course Priestly has knowledge of this therefore he uses this to create dramatic irony. At the time all people wanted was money. They didn’t really care how people suffered in the process but then in 1945 people wanted ‘a new Britain’- there was higher employment and better wages. Priestly wanted to see who had caused both wars so he ‘went back in time’ Also he wanted to show people that if they carried on they would end up having another war.
The characters in the play are very different. The characters Mr. Birling and Sheila appear to be most different . Mr. Birling is selfish and ignorant even when his mistakes are clearly pointed out to him he refused to admit it ‘a man has to mind his own business and look after himself and his own’ this quote shows how selfish he really is. He says how he doesn’t care what happens to anyone, in his eyes it’s just him ans his family. This is why he reacts so stubbornly and cold when he hears about Eva’s death.
