Legendary PKMN of the Week 5

It’s Saturday once again, which means it’s now time for one of my Legendary Pokemon of the Week posts. I’ve mentioned in the intro of this world that I’m working on a Pokemon fan fiction project. That project has recently reached its second phase, a trilogy of stories that tells the story of an OC I came up with. So to celebrate that, and promote the story here on TheO, I’m going to talk about the Legendary Pokemon that features prominently in this trilogy. It’s one of the fourth generations event Legendary Pokemon, and perhaps the darkest Legendary Pokemon of them all, Darkrai.

Dawn looks a bit possessed in the image I used for this post. Anyway, Darkrai is known for causing terrible nightmares. This would make one think that Darkrai is an evil Pokemon. But like most Dark-type Pokemon, Darkrai is not evil, just very misunderstood. The ability to cause nightmares is simply a defense mechanism, and it’s one that Darkrai can’t seem to fully control. This is implied in Pokemon Platinum after Darkrai is captured, but more on that in a moment.

Hangout: In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Darkrai is only found on a place called New Moon Island. According to what I’ve read, there isn’t anything else to the island except an entrance to the Sinnoh Underground. So once Darkrai is captured, there isn’t really any reason to come back to the island, except perhaps to use the Underground entrance. However, the island can only be reach by obtaining an item called the Membership Pass. The only way to get this item is through a special Nintendo event.

According to what I’ve read, here’s how the event goes down. Once the player has the Membership Pass, he or she is able to get into the old inn at Canalave City. There are some differences with this little event between Platinum and Diamond and Pearl. In both versions of the event, the player goes to this inn and takes a little nap in one of the rooms. In Diamond and Pearl, the player has a nightmare and wakes up to find a diary about Darkrai. After this, the player must go talk to the sailor in Canalave City to get to New Moon Island.

In Platinum, after the player falls asleep and has the nightmare, he or she simply wakes up on New Moon Island and goes to battle Darkrai. In Platinum after capturing Darkrai, a voice will tell the player that Darkrai fled to the island so that it would not needlessly harm others with its power to inflict nightmares. This voice is implied to either be Arceus, or Darkrai’s counterpart, which will be the subject of next week’s post. Anyway, after the event in Platinum the player wakes up back at the inn with Darkrai either in the party, or in their PC. Sort of like the twist ending to a horror story I guess.

Signature Move: Like most of the more powerful Legendary Pokemon, Darkrai has its own signature move, in the form of Dark Void. Dark Void doesn’t cause any damage, but it does drag the opponent into a deep dark sleep. Combined with Darkrai’s signature ability, Bad Dreams, this can cause some damage. This attack also combos well with Dream Eater, which can cause even more damage. In my opinion, this is a really fun way to torture the opponent.

Noir Mask: So at the beginning of this post I mentioned that Darkrai plays an important role in a fan fiction project I’m working on. That role is as the secret weapon of an OC I came up with, an elite Team Rocket agent known as Noir Mask. Noir Mask has already appeared in two of my other fanfics, Fire for Ice (which is not my best work), and Trial of the Phoenix. I’m currently working on Noir Mask’s origin story, Rise of Noir Mask. You can read Fire for Ice, Trial of the Phoenix, and Rise of Noir Mask on Fan Fiction.Net, or here on TheO in my fan fiction world, Tales of Light and Darkness.

So that wraps it up for this week. Next week I’ll be talking about Darkrai’s opposite, which I guess makes this a two-part post. Until next time then.
