As you might’ve guessed, it’s that time of the week again. A few of you have probably figured out by now that I’m a fan of mechanical Pokemon, so for this week I’ll be covering one such Pokemon that’s also a Legendary. Presenting the member of the Legendary Golems representing the Iron Age, Registeel.
I first learned of Registeel and its two brethren from the strategy guide of this one dude I knew a few years ago. He was not by any means a friend of mine; actually he was kind of a jerk. But somehow I had seen a few pages of his strategy guide and that’s how I learned of the Golems and where they were located in Ruby and Sapphire (and by extension, Emerald). It’s also how I learned of Rayquaza and the Sky Pillar, but that’s for another post. Anyway, when I saw Registeel I thought it looked like a big robot. So naturally I wanted to get my hands on it.
To fully understand the story of Registeel, I must first discuss its creator, Regigigas. It is said that when the world was young, Regigigas took some ropes and moved the continents into place (because Groudon didn’t do a good enough job I guess). Then later on, perhaps because it was lonely, Regigigas created three new Pokemon in its own image. From rocks it built Regirock, from ice it carved Regice, and from magma it forged the hollow body of Registeel. For a time, the ancients worshipped Regigigas and its golems, but after awhile they became afraid of its power and locked it away beneath the Snowpoint Temple in Sinnoh. Then they carted the golems away to the Hoenn Region and placed them behind a series of elaborate seals.
Hangout: In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, Registeel is found within a small structure known as the Ancient Tomb. But in order to unlock the tomb, you have to break the outer seal. And to do that you must go to the underwater Sealed Chamber, which is a little hard to get to. Then you have to break the inner seal of the tomb by deciphering an easy but somewhat poetic riddle on the wall. Then all you need to do is go in and interact with Registeel.
In Pokemon Platinum, Registeel can be found within a special chamber on Iron Island. But to unlock it you need a special event Regigigas received during the eleventh movie. It’s kind of a switch since you need the three golems to awaken the normal Regigigas. Registeel can also be found in Black 2 and White 2 in a place simply known as the Underground Ruins. But to get to it you first have to capture Regirock and obtain the Steel Key. In Black 2 you get the Steel Key automatically, but to obtain the key in White 2 you have to switch it over with the Ice Key in White 2 using the Unova Link function.
Cracking the Code: Even though I had learned of the existence of Registeel and its two counterparts, I didn’t know how to break the seals of the Sealed Chamber because the inscriptions were written in brail. But the strategy guide of that guy I mentioned before had the brail alphabet towards the back. I asked to borrow the guide so I could copy it down, but as said before the guy was a jerk and would not hand it over. I mean I only needed it for a few minutes so I could copy the brail, I didn’t see what the big deal was. So my friends and I, with the help of the teaching staff of the school, came up with an elaborate scheme to sneak the book out onto the bus long enough for me to do my copying, after which I of course returned the book.
In retrospect I suppose I could’ve just used the Internet, but this was more fun. Anyway, I went back to the Sealed Chamber in the game and translated the first inscription. It read, “Dig here”. I laughed a bit because I was expecting something a little more elaborate and poetic, but I had also screwed up because I had already used the TM for Dig and had deleted the move on that Pokemon. And at the time I didn’t know of any other Pokemon that could learn Dig naturally in Sapphire, so I ended up resetting my game. In attempt two I broke the first seal, then used Relicanth and Wailord to break the second seal, then it was off to the Ancient Tomb. After one more seal and a few resets I had captured Registeel, and do to its appearance I had given it a nickname after a classic song, Mr. Roboto.
That wraps it up for this week. For next week I have a sort of special event planned for this series. All I’ll say is that it’s a tie-in with my next Charater Salute Post. So for now stay tuned. In the meantime in honor of my first Registeel, here's the classic song by Styx that inspired its nickname.
