Dragon Week 6: Hydreigon

We now enter the sixth day of Dragon Week, and considering that today is the infamous Black Friday, this line of Pokemon seems rather appropriate. Presenting Deino, Zweilous, and Hydreigon.

I had kinda hoped that at some point there would be a Dragon Pokemon that was also of the Dark type. And here my hopes have been realized. Hydreigon is perhaps the hardest Dragon Pokemon to train, partly due to its malevolent nature. Even as Deino this Pokemon can be hard to handle. They bite pretty much anything, especially since their blind due to eons of living in caves. So one can imagine that Hydreigon is even more vicious. Hydreigon will pretty much attack anything that moves, making it a dragon that truly lives up to the Dark type.

In the Games: The only place to find Deino in Black and White is in Unova’s Victory Road. In Black 2 and White 2 however, the only way to get Deino is to breed one of its evolved forms. That seems to be the case with a few other Pokemon in B2/W2, which still seems weird to me. As for Zweilous, the reverse seems to be the case, as you have to evolve Deino to get it in Black and White, but can be found in Victory Road in B2/W2. As for Hydreigon of course, the only way to get that Pokemon in any of the games is to evolve it from Zweilous.

Evolution: Another reason why Hydreigon is the hardest Dragon Pokemon to train is because it takes so long to evolve it. Deino does not evolve into Zweilous until level fifty. Yes, I said level fifty. That’s pretty much around the level when most dragons usually reach their final form. Anyway, after evolving into Zweilous, they gain a second head. These heads apparently do not get along with each other at all. Zweilous does not evolve into Hydreigon until level sixty-four (yes, level sixty-four). At this point they gain a third head and eyes, along with some wings. The heads no longer fight with each other, probably because head number three is the boss. And as I said before, Hydreigon will pretty much attack anything that moves or looks at it funny. In short, this is a Pokemon that’s pretty much meant for experienced Dragon Pokemon Trainers.

Brutal: Hydreigon is classified as the Brutal Pokemon in the Pokedex, and that is a classification that this Pokemon lives up to quite well. For as hard as this Pokemon is to train, it’s even harder to defeat in battle. And it kinda sucks that Hydreigon is used by Ghetsis of Team Plasma, and at least one Unova Region champion (how is it that Iris is so powerful in B2/W2?). According to something I read on seribii.net, there aren’t any good ways to counter Hydreigon in battle. I mean type-wise, Pokemon like Lucario or Articuno would have a good advantage against Hydreigon. But that doesn’t really help when you consider that this dragon can learn some pretty powerful Fire-type moves, among other things. So it seems like the best option is to just hit Hydreigon fast and hard, which would be my usual fighting style anyway. Or you can just try using your strongest Legendary Pokemon and hope for the best.

That covers it for today. Tomorrow we wrap up Dragon Week with the next Legendary Pokemon of the Week post, which will be covering one of the first Legendary Dragon-type Pokemon. So until then, stay tuned. And remember, today is Black Friday; so if you value your life, do not go into any store other than a grocery store. If you really want something to do, go out to a movie. Or better yet, just stay home and read a book, or play some video games, or watch some anime or something. Just stay safe, and thank you for reading.
