As I’m sure that many of you are aware, the sixth generation of the Pokemon games is come later this year. Which means a whole batch of Legendary Pokemon that I’ll probably do posts on. For right now though, there are still a few Legendary Pokemon from previous generations to cover. So for this week I’ll be covering one of the Sinnoh Region’s big legendary trios. Presenting the Lake Guardians of Sinnoh, Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit.
According to the myths of Sinnoh, in the beginning there was Arceus, who supposedly created the universe. Once the universe was created, and Arceus had created Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina to guard the realms of time, space, and antimatter respectively, he created Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit. And it was said that the three hatched from a single egg. With the birth of the group now known as the Lake Guardians came the creation of spirit. Uxie was the embodiment of knowledge, Azelf the embodiment of willpower, and Mesprit the embodiment of emotion.
There are a few individual legends about these three Pokemon. If one were to look it Uxie’s eyes, that person’s memory would be wiped, which is why Uxie always keeps its eyes closed. A legend about Azelf states that if one were to try and harm in, they would lose all willpower. As for Mesprit, it is thought that if anyone were to touch it, they would lose all sense of emotion. This is supposedly what happened to Cyrus, the leader of Team Galactic. Originally I wasn’t a huge fan of these three Pokemon, but after using them in this one fanfic I did last year they kinda grew on me.
Hangout: As the name of the group suggests, all three of these Pokemon can be found at the three great lakes of Sinnoh back in Generation Four. Uxie can be found in the cave at Lake Acuity, while Azelf can be found within the cave at Lake Valor. Mesprit on the other hand can be found in the cave at Lake Verity, but can’t be caught there. Instead it roams around the routes of Sinnoh and has to be hunted down. The Lake Guardians make a return in Black 2 and White 2. After spotting them within a place called the Cave of Being, the Lake Guardians scatter to three different parts of Unova. Azelf moves to a spot on Unova’s Route 23, Uxie takes up a spot in front of the Nacrene City Museum, and Mesprit can be found atop the Celestial Tower. And this time it won’t run away.
Anime Role: With Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina playing major roles in the movies, the Lake Guardians were given a bigger part in the anime’s Team Galactic storyline. During the Sinnoh Saga, each member of the trio appeared to Ash and one of his friends, choosing them as a partner. Azelf chose Ash, Mesprit chose Dawn, and Uxie chose Brock. Dialga and Palkia did appear towards the end of the storyline, but it was more of a minor role in my opinion. Needless to say I was rather disappointed at the time. Still, my opinion of the Lake Guardians has changed since then.
