Pokemon Bird Watch: Fearow

Sorry for not doing one of these posts last week. Last week I decided to take a little vacation from some of my writing. But I’m back now, and I’m picking up right where I left off. So in the last post I covered Farfetch’d, the odd but rare little duck that back in the first generation games could be obtained by trading a much more common bird. Now I’ll be covering that very common yet formidable bird. Presenting Spearow and its evolved form, Fearow.

Anyone who has either seen the very first episode of the Pokemon anime or has played the Generation One games should be very familiar with Spearow. This little bird can be caught very early on in the games, thus making them one of the first Flying-type Pokemon new trainers can capture. But despite their small size, Spearow can be pretty nasty. Not only are they ill tempered, Spearow are known for being very territorial and warlike. And a whole flock of these little birds can spell trouble. Fearow also exhibit this same aggressive behavior, but are also far more powerful. Thus making Fearow even more dangerous.

In the Games: As mentioned before, Spearow is a very common bird in Kanto. They can be found on many routes that are almost too numerous to mention. Not to mention a few Sevii Island locations in FireRed and LeafGreen. Spearow’s not quite as common in Johto, but are easily found on Routes 33, 42, 46, and 47. They can also be found by head butting trees and in Johto’s Safari Zone. In Sinnoh Spearow are even less common, being found only on Routes 225 and 226, and in Unova Spearow can only be obtained through breeding.

Though not quite as common as their pre-evolved form, Fearow can be found in the wild. In Kanto these great birds can be found on Routes 17, 18, and 23, and in a few Sevii Island locations. In Johto (depending on the version of the game), Fearow are usually located on Routes 42, 47, and 48, and in the Johto Safari Zone. In Sinnoh they can be found on Routes 225 through 227. And in the Unova Region, Fearow can be located on Unova Route 15.

Evolution: Despite their aggressive behavior and being effective in a group, one lone Spearow isn’t quite that powerful. Their tiny little wings don’t make them all that good at flying. But upon evolving into Fearow at level twenty these birds become quite formidable opponents. Not only do they become much larger in size and gain better wings, they also gain a much sharper and longer beak. This new beak not only allows Fearow to use a move like Drill Peck, it also allows the bird to use the Ground-type move Drill Run. This gives the birds a slight edge over Electric Pokemon.

Episode One: As mentioned earlier, Spearow appeared in the very first episode of the Pokemon anime. In that episode Ash inadvertently angered a Spearow in an attempt to catch it. As a result a whole ticked off flock began to chase after Ash and Pikachu, during a thunder storm no less. In the end Pikachu used a powerful electric attack to scare the flock off. Then the storm cleared and Ash and Pikachu saw the great legendary bird Ho-Oh fly through the sky above them. The same Spearow Ash ended up ticking off appeared again in a later episode as a wild Fearow. But that’s sort of for another post.

That wraps it up for this week’s post. Next time, I’ll be covering another one of Kanto’s common yet powerful birds. So stay tuned.
