Last night, since the latest Pokemon movie has been out in Japan for awhile, I decided to see how Mewtwo gained its new form in the anime. In other words, I wanted to see what triggered it. What I found out though rather shocked me. Now keep in mind that this information is from Bulbapedia, so it may not be a hundred percent accurate. But apparently, the Mewtwo in the new movie is a completely different individual from the one that first appeared in the anime. According to the info, this second Mewtwo was created by a new team of scientists and escaped into the wild. Unlike the original member of this species, this second Mewtwo has no desire to destroy all life on the planet, but prefers not to have anything to do with humans.
I was pretty disappointed by this news. I was looking forward to seeing the old Mewtwo that we all know and love make a triumphant return. But I suppose I was expecting too much from an anime that's now a shadow of what it was. On the other hand, it is kind of interesting that this new Mewtwo seems to be female (at least in the undubbed version). But the problem I'm having is it doesn't quite make sense. I mean I buy that there can be more than one Lugia or more than one Darkrai because those are Legendary Pokemon that occur in nature. But Mewtwo is a synthetic creation. The only way for this to truly make sense is if this second team of scientists somehow got its hands on the research notes from the original Mewtwo project and a fresh sample of Mew DNA. So I'm hoping that the anime will have a good explanation, but again, I'm probably expecting a little too much.
