Legendary PKMN of the Week 31

For this week’s edition of Legendary Pokemon of the Week, I’m going to be covering what may be the deadliest Pokemon in existence. Presenting the mascot of Pokemon Y, the bird of destruction known as Yveltal.

Not too long ago as a response to the Pokemon GO craze, the Anime News Network’s weekly feature series known as The List covered the top ten Pokemon that we as humans would not want to exist in the real world. The Pokemon that had the honor of earning the number one spot on the list was Yveltal, and I for one think that position was well deserved. Yveltal could be considered as sort of an evil version of the phoenix, as it dies only to come back to life later on. Instead of bursting into flames at the end of its life cycle though, Yveltal spreads its wings and absorbs the life force of every living creature in the area before turning into a cocoon for a thousand years. Meanwhile, everything that happens to be around Yveltal when it turns into a cocoon is completely laid to waste. In Yveltal’s only anime appearance, the forest where it entered its cocoon stage was transformed into a gathering of dead trees. One could only imagine the damage that would occur if Yveltal’s life came to an end in the middle of a large city.

Hangout: In Pokemon Y, the only place to find Yveltal is in the basement of Team Flare’s secret headquarters. In that version of the game, Yveltal’s cocoon has been embedded in the heart of Team Flare’s doomsday device as the power source. One can only imagine where Team Flare had originally found the cocoon, or how they transported it to their base without accidentally awakening the bird of death and incurring its wrath. In any case, the player has to capture or defeat Yveltal in order to ruin Team Flare’s plan. It could probably be noted that Yveltal has a fairly high capture rate for such a powerful Legendary Pokemon.

Signature Move: Like most powerful Legendary Pokemon, Yveltal has its own signature attack in the form of Oblivion Wing. In addition to dealing some major damage, Oblivion Wing allows Yveltal to regain lost HP equal to over half the damage inflicted. In essence, Oblivion Wing is the personification of Yveltal’s power to absorb the life force of other beings. It’s interesting to note that Oblivion Wing is a Flying-Type move rather than a Dark-Type move. Of course the reason why Oblivion Wing is a Flying-Type attack instead of a Dark-Type is because it would otherwise be weak against Yveltal’s archrival, but I’m getting ahead of myself by a week.

Signature Ability: In addition to having its own signature attack, Yveltal also has its own signature ability in the form of Dark Aura. Dark Aura gives a major power boost to the Dark-Type attacks of every Pokemon in play, including the opposing Pokemon it seems. Yveltal benefits from its own ability pretty well, since it can learn some pretty good Dark-Type moves like Dark Pulse. Of course the real power of Dark Aura shows its true power in double or triple battles, as it would power up the attacks of the other Pokemon one might have sent out with Yveltal. In short, Yveltal is a great addition to any Dark Pokemon-based team.

That pretty much covers it for this week’s post. For next week, I’ll be covering the Legendary Pokemon that’s Yveltal’s opposite number. So until next time, stay tuned.
