"What can I get you two this fine morning? Drinks first?" The Gardevoir asked with a pen in one hand and a pad of paper in the other. I gave a nod, and she continued talking. "Okay, what can I get you?" the waitress asked. I smiled a bit and then returned my gaze to the menu that I had looked down on somewhat more intently than usual. I slowly found that my eyes were lifting of their own accord, and I was looking up over the menu at Shupple.
"Just a glass of water," I finally answered, and the Gardevoir turned to Shupple as she finished writing down the order.
"And you?" She asked Shupple.
"Just a glass of iced tea." Shupple answered. The Gardevoir nodded, finished writing, and moved back into the back room of the café.
My head turned to Shupple for a moment, and I found that she was pushing her stray bangs away from her face. I hadn’t really ever seen her eyes in that way before… I felt the strange need to draw them just as they were with a few perspective concepts maybe added in… Shupple seemed to look down at the menu, and I found my eyes drop as well.
There was a mix of fruits and breakfast foods that all seemed appetizing at that point it time. However, I wasn’t in the mood to have another fruit incident and decided on getting a pastry with cream filling instead. The Gardevoir had come back with the drinks and set them delicately on the table. My eye moved back to the menu, and yet my eye wouldn’t stay put. I wanted to draw something… no… I wanted to draw everything… I wanted to try out a mix of patterns and sketches and everything at once…..
“Did you decide on what you wanted?” the Gardevoir asked.
“Oh yes,” I answered returning my gaze again. “I will have the pastry with the cream filling please.”
“Why certainly,” she answered back writing it down before turning to Shupple. "What will you be getting, dearie?" The waitress asked with a smile forming on her face lightly.
"Just a doughnut with fruit on the side." Shupple answered. The Gardevoir nodded taking the menus and quickly gliding back to the other end of the café. Before I turned my eyes back, I realized that the Gardevoir was not walking at all but rather hovering just a few feet above the ground and pretending to walk for the sake of those that were in the room. I shook my head for a moment and then looked back at Shupple for a split second. The entire café seemed to have a feel to it that intrigued me. There were pleasant ascetic items all over the place. I couldn’t help but take in all the sites in. My fingers twitched, and I found that I had started to draw the scene with a nail on the table methodically.
Finally my eyes came back to Shupple, and she smiled lightly, but suddenly she darted my glace, and I found my eyes shift away nervously as well. It would have continued like that someone strangely had not the waitress come back carrying the breakfast food just a few centimeters above where here hand was actually placed. Setting down everything, the Gardevoir smile again.
“If you two need anything,” she began lightly. “Don’t be afraid to ask.”
Hovering away again, the Gardevoir moved off to the rest of the customers in the café. I looked down at the food that had been placed before me and then up at Shupple. We both stared for a moment and then returned our gazes to the table.
“It looks really good,” I commented thinking that it was probably some form of selling point within the café as a whole to have everything set up that way. It was very pleasant to look at, and for a moment, I didn’t even want to eat it.
However, my stomach changed this notion within me, and I looked back at Shupple for a moment before we both picked up the food and started eating. It was incredibly tasisty, and I couldn’t even begin to say what it tasted like. It was so light and warm. Eating with careful bites and making sure that I knew my table manners well enough, I continued eating looking up every once in a while at Shupple who also ate with a careful stride.
After we finished eating, we sat for a bit taking sips of our designated drinks. I found I was looking more and more intently at Shupple every chance I got, but as soon as she would look back, I found that my eyes would dart downwards or away. I couldn’t understand this strange feeling that was now working its way through me. Then it hit me again, and I started to wonder exactly what had caused Shupple to crash into me and had set off this row of dominoes.
“Shupple?” I asked quietly looking up at her.
It must have been the way I had said it for Shupple gave me a strange look as she answered.
“What?” she asked, but in that moment, the question no longer needed to be answered in my mind. It had left and gone off to the void of things that I would actually never pursue again. However, this left things in the air, and I had no idea what I was going to say anymore.
“The food was good,” I commented. Oh for the love of Ho-Oh. I had failed that start of a conversation and knew it. I felt my eyes drop unsure of what she would reply with.
“Ya it was,” Shupple agreed starting to spin the straw that she had in her cup methodically.
“I’ll pay for everything,” I said quickly. Shupple seemed surprised and made a motion to raise her eyebrow. However, it fell after a second as Shupple seemed to come to her own conclusions.
“Are you sure though?” Shupple asked.
“Ya…” I answered feeling a strange amount of force in my voice for one reason or another.
“Ok…” Shupple answered quietly, and I was left with a strange feeling about it.
The Gardevoir came back, and I took the bill paying for it in full. It was then that I realized that I still had a lot of money left. I had not even thought about it since I rarely thought about money anyways. Whenever I ran out, I would just do a commission to two and collect on that. For some reason, this seemed insignificant to me in that moment. I shook my head to clear it.
“D…do you want to go straight back to the mansion?” Shupple asked in a tone that I registered as unassuredness. I truly didn’t want to go back to the mansion just yet. I couldn’t quite place why, but suddenly I wanted to draw again and had wished that I had brought my sketchbook along. However, I was also conflicted with wanting to stay with Shupple here… it was… nice….
“Maybe…” I said keeping my voice level but finding it strangely shaky. “Maybe we could just walk for a bit though…”
It was a quiet suggestion, and I couldn’t quite explain it. Shupple seemed to look down at her arm suddenly, and my eyes moved as well. However, her sleeves were up all the way passed her hand, and I couldn’t see anything out of the norm. Yet there was something in the way that she was looking at it that worried me. Shupple looked up as if she had suddenly realized that I had answered.
“That would… be nice,” Shupple said. Her face flushed red, and I found that my face did as well.
