Mear
“My wish was... to never evolve and I to have a lot of friends... maybe a boyfriend one day, but none of that came true...” Shupple said after a moment. She turned sharp red and seemed to cover her mouth quickly. Something twisted in my stomach, and I had no idea what to say. I had promised her that I would grant her wish, and yet I found it hard to even address. After a moment, Shupple released her mouth and breathed out starting to talk again. “Another part of it was for my family to stay together... The whole wish didn't come true. I mainly had wished for my family to stay together and to have a lot of friends...” Shupple let the last part out with a cynical laugh, and yet I was feeling somewhat numbed by her words.
“The whole wish itself was so stupid... But I am... glad I have you as a... friend, Mear,” Shupple said after another moment. I felt my face move into a half smile, but for one reason or another, I couldn’t will myself to finish the smile. It was strange as if I was holding back or something. I couldn’t explain, and it would lead to more internal questions later.
Just as I was about to start addressing the question as to why I was feeling that way, Shupple started talking and shifted my attention. “What... did you want to know about... evolving?” Shupple asked quietly as if to start up another conversation.
“I.. don’t really know a lot about it…” I answered after a moment realizing that a statement was not a question, and I was just adding more of a generalized understanding than anything. “Since Smeargle don’t evolve, I never really took it into consideration… what is it like? Or… do you know?” It had just come to mind that Shupple was still in her first form and hadn’t evolved yet, so my question was technically voided.
“It’s supposed to be….” Shupple said after a moment falling into a bit of silence as though she were trying to chose her words as carefully as possible. “Kind of difficult… and the change is supposed to be tremendous…and… life changing… and things…” Shupple shook her head as if the words she was saying were not the ones she was trying to say. I could understand this due to my own reflections and let a breath out in agreement.
“Do you change your name?” I asked after a moment.
“S-some do…” Shupple answered seeming surprised by the question. I inferred from this that she expected me to ask a different question. What that question as though, I had no idea. “Others… just keep their names… It just depends…”
“Ah…” I motioned back unsure of how to respond to the answer.
“Evolving is supposed to make you stronger though,” Shupple said after a moment. “Attack and defense power goes up… but it also makes more … trouble than it is worth….” Shupple looked down and was trying to address the floor at that moment. “But there is no real way to not evolve.. unless you use and Ever Stone… and even then… It’s… I don’t know… kind of limiting…” Shupple shook her head even as she continued to look down at and address the floor. In that moment, I wished that she would look up and be happy or something, and yet I didn’t know what to do on the matter at all.
“It’ll be ok,” Shupple commented into the silence that had suddenly formed between us. Shupple suddenly seemed to force herself up and out of the chair. She was still pale and looked even more tired than before, yet as she looked at me, Shupple tried to force a smile. “How about….. just one more dance?”
