Though I felt bad for leaving Badrak and Gale and the doctor guy back there, all of that caring nature bubbling around was really making me uncomfortable. I sighed as I walked down the hall, hoping that the leader was somewhere near.
…Gale was a great guy, but every time he looked at me his eyes sparkled as if we were the best of friends. It made my stomach churn. The only real friend I’d never had was Chii… And look how that turned out.
BB squeaked for me to talk to her and I cupped my hands around her to remove her from my hair where she usually wrapped her vines around to stay in place. I felt her unfurl her vines and I lowered her to eye level.
She spoke slowly, first of Gale and Ivax… And then of Chii. At this I hushed her, but she continued with greater fervor.
What a bold little berry she was. Everything she said about Chii and I almost made me believe we still were friends. But even she had to know that could never be again. He hated me. The two times he saw me in the dream he had screamed and tried to beat me to a bloody pulp.
A knot formed in my throat as I whispered to her, “….He hates me, BB. And because of what I did he’ll never know me as his friend again… I stole his family away. I saved them and left him for dead… I-I told Shay where he was.”
She was silent and I repeated, “He hates me.”
I placed her back to her spot on my head and felt her vines curl into my hair once again before we walked in silence, my bare feet knotted into the carpet with each step I took.
And there we met again.
I turned the corner and stopped dead in my tracks.
Chii.
He stopped dead, too, as soon as our eyes locked. Neither of us moved, neither spoke.
But someone had to break the silence and it happened to be one of his many companions of whom I didn’t even notice before.
He was a mightyena Gijinka standing next to Chii. “Who are you? Are you new too??”
No one said anything. Another Gijinka, a lopunny, looked to Chii with concern. “Chii, are you alright? You know him?”
Again neither of us said anything and the lopunny girl began to get angry about it. She looked to me. “Who the heck are you?”
But it was Chii who interrupted my answer. “Your not real, Cheruu. You’re from the dream--that nightmare! You’re not really--”
I was tired of this. He still believed that was JUST a dream? “No idiot, I’m as real as you. I was hoping not to find you here though.”
Yet another Gijinka, a poochena, spoke up. “What the heck is going on guys?! And YOU, quit being so rude!”
I could have growled at her, but again the lopunny shouted in agreement, “Chii who is this freak?!”
“Lupe, take the others to the kitchen, I’ll be there--”
“Don’t even THINK about it,” She seethed. “I’m staying right here.”
Augh, women like her are what I’m most afraid of… And I could already tell.
“Please Lupe Darling, this doesn’t have to do with any of you!” Darling? Well well, another admirer. I was sick and tired of his fan girls, but the way they looked at each other made me think there was something more going on here.
“Who are you?!” Lupe asked harshly, ignoring him again.
I answered just as curtly. “Cheruu. I’m looking for the leader.”
“I’m her, but hell will freeze over before I give you a room--Now how do you know Chii?”
I sighed in exasperation. Time to let the cat out of the bag--Seemed like I wasn’t getting a room any time soon in any case.
“I lived in the island with Chii since we were children… We were best friends.”
“And then he left me,” Chii hissed.
All I could do was nod. “That I did, but you’re too blind to understand. I had to.”
“You LAIR. You sold me out!” Sparks began to fly from his earrings and I prepared for a fight.
Lupe prepared as well, but this time Chii said more sternly than ever, “Get out of here, Lupe!”
“No!”
“Please--”
“Let her stay.” I said calmly. “Let her see.”
He sighed in anger as he said, “Fine. Lupe, Poochy, Hiro--Stay back or run. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
Then the dog-like Gijinka, Hiro I think, spoke up. “Why the heck do you two need to fight?”
That stopped us both in our tracks and we stared at him.
He continued, “You said you two were friends and had a misunderstanding… Can’t you just--”
“No, Hiro. We can’t do that.” Chii looked back to me. “I’m sorry guys.”
He then roared, sending from his mouth and fingertips a huge bolt of electricity. I dodged barely, feeling the vibration of the sparks on my skin.
“MAGICAL LEAF!” Leaves of every color danced from my hands and unwillingly from under BB’s leaves, cutting in several places on Chii’s skin. Blood from shallow cuts began to flow, but he continued to run towards me in the large hallway.
“Hey guys knock it off!!” I heard Lupe scream. “This is a house where people LIVE not a BATTLE FRONT!”
I smiled grimly. “Then let’s take this outside.” Before he could pummel into me, I grabbed his shoulders bursting with electricity and wrenched us both backwards until we were in a bigger hall. He growled at me to let go but I put all my energy into heaving the both of us into a window and smashing it open with the force.
I hear someone scream from the mansion as we hurled through the air and onto the grounds. I took the time to let go of Chii and leap onto a tree while he kicked off from the wall of the mansion and torpedoed to me with the strength of his legs.
“HEY! YOU FRICKN’---YOU’LL PAY FOR THIS!” I heard that Lupe woman scream, but I was much too preoccupied with my fight.
Only a few feet away from me, thunder on his fist, he delivered a blow that nearly crashed into my face, but I swung from the limb of the tree and ran for new cover. He didn’t let me have that time though. As soon as he missed, he jumped down and pursued me.
“Tell me why you left me!!” He yelled. I felt the cold chill of thunder graze my back, stinging like heck but I kept running. “TELL ME!!”
“I HAD to!”
“THAT’S NOT A REASON!!” Again he hit me, and again I continued to run, but not without a short falter. BB wailed in a high-pitched voice, trying to get to Chii and speak to him. Why did she care--He was never able to understand her.
Now my turn to fight back, I stopped and immediately turned. “Vine whip!” Two small vines came from BB and four from the back of my neck, lashing out and slapping Chii across the face mid-run. He hit the ground and cried out when his ankle twisted a bit. It did not break, but a sprain would slow him down.
I looked at him writhing on the ground for a time, before sniffing in unconcern. “I’m leaving.” I said bluntly. “Live your life here for all I care. I could never stand to be in the same residence as you in any case. Goodbye.”
“Wait a frickn’ minute!” He stood on one leg and glared directly at me from a few feet away.
“What is it?”
“Tell me why.”
“You’d never--”
“Then MAKE me understand.”
We were silent for a moment, both of us staring the other down.
I felt BB stir and give a small string of squeaks. Tell the truth…? My heart wrenched. It hurt too much….. But it had to be done.
Without emotion I began. “The storm was coming, but none of us knew it but Shay’s gang. He told us, a group of us when you were doing yoga at the house. We didn’t believe him and he told us we’d be sorry… And we were.” I didn’t have to remind him. “The very next day I sensed it in the air and began to get everyone packed and ready as fast as possible, but before I could get to you… That gang was there again. Shay told me that for not listening to his warning, we’d have to leave someone behind.” I paused. “… He wanted Monique to stay, because she was a safegaurd neusince but I wouldn’t let him have her.” I watched as Chii’s face changed ever so slightly. This was the hardest part.
I swallowed. “…I said to take you.”
The anger returned to his features and his yell cam again, “YOU DISGUSTING--”
“It was either you or her!” I screamed back. “I chose you above anyone else because back then I had begun to think you only cared for yourself and it was about time you learned a FRICKN’ LESSON!!”
There was silence after my scream and darn it all… I felt tears in my eyes. “… you were so full of yourself, so sure of yourself…. I was angry. I was tired of you. So I let them have you and left with the rest.”
Why--Why was I crying?!
“Cheruu--” He began in a whisper.
“But now I know… And I was too stubborn to tell you that I had begun to change my mind in the dream when you attacked me--you know how I am. But the more I saw you protect the people here… These people you love I began to realize what an… Awful thing I did.” Angry and embarrassed tears burned their way down my face, and yet I kept a firm expression.
I saw them in his eyes as well.
“…You love these people.” I finally stared sincerely into his eyes. “…I’m sorry for thinking the way I did.”
We stood in silence until I turned. “That’s all.” I was about to leave when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned briefly before he spun me around and into his arms. We cried proudly, trying to stay strong for the other, but the realization of so many weeks of hurt were falling.
“…I forgive you,” He pulled away, smiling brightly and whipping away a stray tear in his eye. “… Honey bunches~”
I pushed him away immediately and heard him wince from his ankle. “W-way to ruin it!” I stuttered through tears.
He laughed. “T-that’s the Cheruu I know!… I’m so happy your back.”
I sighed, whipping away my tears and trying to keep my unhappy demeanor in check. “Pffftt… Well, me too.”
I heard someone coming in the forest, but I didn’t care much.
I had my best friend again.
