As I stood up and smelled the air for signs of fresh food, I caught a chill.
"Oh...?" came a voice from behind me, "Does everyone really smell that bad that you had to escape?"
I whirled around on the spot to find the dark Luxray leaning against a tree smirking. I tensed as I glared at him.
"My my, what's with that look?" he raised his hands in mock surprise. "I merely came out before dinner is ready to catch a bit of fresh air. We've still got about an hour and a half before everything's ready, don't we? By the way, I am Xio. Pleasure to meet you."
I raised an eyebrow, "I heard your introduction... I won't be joining in tonight, sorry to say."
He smirked and took a step to the side while looking at me. I also stepped to the side so that we circled one another. He appeared to be examining me, then he opened his mouth to speak again, "Oh? A bit anti-social, don't you think? Or do you not want to join everyone because you're different from them?"
I started to feel apprehensive, "What's that supposed to mean?"
Xio smiled, though it didn't particularly feel warm, "Well just look at yourself. You're not like most Absol... Your tail is short, your horn is short, you're short..."
"What's your point?!" I snapped.
"... And with a short temper to boot," he said. "Seems like you're the type to be the target of much teasing and abuse." He shrugged as if he was bothered by it. This guy's speech just oozes "phony..."
"And what? You thought you'd make me your target as well?" I said a growl rising in my throat.
"Oh, but of course not...!" He raised his hands again, "I merely thought I'd say I understand being different. But you shouldn't let something as trivial as that keep you from getting to know such fine fellow gijinka."
I looked at him sideways, not liking anything he was saying, despite him trying to make it sound sugary, "I'll worry about that myself, thanks..."
He shrugged, "That's fine. Don't say I didn't try. I'll leave you to your business out here. I should go explore a bit myself. Another time..."
He disappeared almost instantly. "..." I stared off in the direction his scent seemed to be traveling. I do not like that guy... I thought. He seems to have ulterior motives, but I won't do anything about it. It's got nothing to do with me and I don't even know what his aims are.
I decided to go a bit further into the forest to gather some wild mushrooms and herbs and anything else I could find. It took me about a half hour, but I also need to make something to cook them in. I searched for a big enough rock and used a scratch attack on it until it resembled a pot. I made two smaller bowls as well. Gathering water, smaller rocks and branches, I built a fire and placed the pot on it to boil the water. I wondered if maybe there were some wild roots or something growing and went off to search again. I probably shouldn't have left the fire going, but I would smell it if it started to go out of control. I managed to find some wild potatoes, onions, and other tubers. I looked up and noticed I was closer to the mansion again. I saw the a bunch of gijinka eating around the table. Some looked like they were finishing up, too. Guess it took me a while to gather up this stuff... I noticed the flareon from earlier getting up and running away from the kitchen table. Seemed like something spooked him. As I was trying to listen in, I smelled cooked meat coming from the kitchen again. I ran in the direction of my campground before I reacted again.
Setting the stuff off to the side I rubbed off as much dirt as I could and rinsed my spoils in one of the smaller bowls. I used my horn to chop them over the pot. As it was cooking, it seemed like something was missing. I noticed there was a patch of wild rosemary growing not too far from where I was sitting and went to gather them up. As I did, I heard a branch snap from behind me. I could tell from the scent it was the flareon from earlier. I didn't turn around, but spoke up for him to hear me.
"You know, if you're going to stand there, you might as well come out..." I said.
He didn't respond but seemed to shuffle in place next to the tree he was hiding behind.
"I'm not going to do anything to you, you know..." I said turning around. He still didn't say anthing and his ears fell back. I sighed, "Do you want to help me make this stew?"
