As Kotone’s sprite climbed mt Silver, I could feel the nervousness rising in my stomach. I mean, this is Red. The pokemon master. My Lucario , who was sort of the thug of my team, (I had him to make sure I won every battle, he was sort of a last resort) was at the front of my team for one of the first times ever. It reassured me a bit, seeing his sprite hopping behind Kotone, always there to help her.
But when I got to the very peak of mt Silver, I heard an odd noise, like growling. Before I could mute the ds, a text box came up. “LUCARIO wants to protect Jessica!”
Please note that I had named my player Kotone. I simply shrugged it off as a name glitch, I mean when my brother had given me a cyndaquil egg in exchange for a baby totodile, Ethan started thinking my starter was a Chikorita, this game was full of glitches, nothing to worry about… Right?
When I went to take another step, another text box popped up.
“LUCARIO is looking up at Kotone and whimpering! It’s worried that Jessica might get hurt!”
Now I was really confused. But still, I tried to walk. It let me this time, but Lucario was a few steps behind me now, walking slowly, as if extremely worried.
When I reached the point where Red was, that was when things got really weird. The sprite was the player sprite from pokemon Yellow, the very first pokemon game I had ever played. And instead of me walking up to Red and starting the battle, the sprite turned and looked at Kotone, and Lucario’s growling started again.
“…YoU…-some lines of glitchy text-“
“What the…” I whispered, and it seemed as though “Red” heard me through my microphone.
“YoU.. HeLp mE… FiNd RevEnGe… PeoPlE uSEd mE… LiKE A ToOl.. You DiD nOT… yOU hElpeD mE.. FiNISh JoURney.. YoU.. FrIEnD… WhEN WiTH YoU.. No MissingNO… No M’… NooOOO NiGhtMArES… But ThE OthErs BEnT ReALItY… MadE THiNgs ThEY ShOUlDn’T… RuINEd ThE WorLD… NoW.. I NEeD to GeT ReVenGe.. YoU… hElp ME… GeT RevenGe…”
For a second, I was dumbstruck. Then, fearing what would happen, I began to humour the game.
“Revenge? What do you mean?”
“HeRE.. TaKE ThIS…”
The ‘Item GET!’ theme played, and the text box said ‘Kotone received a bowie knife!’
I realised that Lucario’s growling had stopped. Infact, I couldn’t see him anywhere.
“We wON’t NeED PoKEmOn FoR tHis…”
I ended up pulling the cartridge out before I could actually get “Revenge”. Nobody ended up dying, the game plays fine now, and my soul isn’t stuck inside of it or anything.
But one thing…
I am never going to mt Silver again.
But when I boot up my pokemon Yellow for nostalgia, I am greeted with “WhY Did YoU LeaVE, FrIEnd? I mISSed yOu.”
