Finding Snow

***** - I've been reading some Pokemon Creepypasta from Tumblr (look it up, it's a great site) and I HAD to put this up

You may think I’m one of those lame, jump-on-the-bandwagon types who’re writing a creepypasta to gain fame and populatiry or some other stupid crud. If you knew this story, though, you’d probably wonder why I’m even bothering; this isn’t particularly scary. You can think of me as a dumb n00b trying to pass off a lame story as scary, and you have every right to do so. it’s a free country and a free internet from where I’m standing.

But forget you negative people, I’m telling this one.

This actually happened. And no, I don’t care if you believe me or not. I hadn’t been into the pokemon scene for years, and not really video games at all, besides Drawn to Life and the new Kirby game. When I was younger, I’d followed along with my two sisters collecting the games and doing to mindless battles. Eventually, it became boring and tedious for me, and I quit. I still watched the movies and whatever, but spending huge chunks of my time trying to “catch ‘em all” and beat everyone I could had no appeal, so I either gave or sold all my old games. That changed on my last birthday, when I was given Heart Gold as a gift. I started right away and followed my old routine: breeze along for a while, get stuck at a particularly tough point, don’t play for a couple of weeks, get back in the groove, repeat. I was freed from a particularly tough spot with luck and a traded high-level pokemon, so off I went.

Now what’s important is that as I was getting back into the Pokemon scene I had also gotten into Pokemon-based creepypastas. One of the first ones I read was Snow on Mount Silver, or something with that kind of title. Basically it was a sick messed-up cheat code that made one kid go insane. Go ahead and read it if you haven’t—if you dare, muahahaha—I’ll wait…

Context is important here.

Usually I liked scary stories. They freaked me out in the dark of a lonely bedroom at 3 in the morning, but as long as the sun was out they were the coolest thing—especially those that had actually happened to people I knew. I always wanted something creepy like that to happen to me. I know, I know, ya’ll think I’m crazy, for sure; people I admitted this to did. But when they protested, I would insist; just once, just to get it out of my system, and after that my life could be as normal as it wanted.

But Snow on Mount Silver was different. My sisters and even my young cousin just thought it was just a creepy story, and even liked it, but that story, out of all of the others, just freaked me out to no end. I didn’t like it, didn’t want to re-read it, and when my younger sister wanted to make a jack-o-lantern based off of the possessed Pikachu’s face, I openly protested. Maybe it was my open resistance to this one story that set me up later, I dunno.

So one of the tellers that something was wrong in Snow on Mount Silver was that, when playing the first version of the game, it was snowing on Mount Silver, even though that wasn’t a programmed animation at the time. That’s how one of the people in the story knew something was wrong in the first place. Anyone who’s read the story knows how things go from there.

Oh-kay, context out of the way. So I start the game, over the months beating all the gym leaders, then the Elite Four, then the gym leaders in Kanto—using an old tactic of mine of saving whenever I thought something important was going to happen— and finally working my way to being able to go to Mt. Silver. No bugs at all. Nothing weird, not even something to make a blip on my paranoid creepy-radar. I had completely forgotten about the story at this point, and was excited to see what was up there.

It was great. Training-wise, anyway, I was looking forward to exploring and training here. I knew I had to beat the Elite Four one more time, and my rival, and a trainer I’d never heard of called Red. I only knew of him because of what I found online, and all I knew was that he was a secluded somewhere on Mt. Silver. Somehow this had never really sunk in. Odd, I know.

But after finding the pokemon center at the base of the mountain, I was struck by something odd; there was no one in the pokemon center beside Nurse Joy. No one. There is usually at least someone, but there was no one here. I brushed it off, figuring a place with super-strong pokemon was bound to be secluded, and the designers were trying to be canon. What was even weirder, and I just realized this now: no one was on the path to challenge me. Not on the route leading to Mt. Silver, not at the pokemon center, not even a hiker on my eventual trek up the mountain. Pokemon, sure, but not a single person. I figured someone would be training here like I was going to; it made no sense otherwise.

The higher up the mountain I went, the more weirded out I got. Something was off about this area; it was on the tip of my tounge but I just couldn’t—

Snow on Mount Silver.

That was literally my train of thought when I saw a snow-environment maybe the third level up. The story, the story I never wanted to mess with! Shoot… No turning back now, I figured; I’d already saved at the bottom of the mountain, so I was good. Besides, the chances of having something creepy like the story were slim to none, especially on a new game… right?

As I walked through a cave, I saw a spot that looked important. Hopefully anyone who’s played the game knows what I’m talking about; it’s got big landmarks either above or to the sides of the entrance, it’s usually centered, and all paths lead to it. Quite literally. I saved before entering.

Snow.

Gently falling snow fell down. I shivered just a little in real life and made my character run forward, eyes widening as the footsteps behind my pokemon slowly vanished.

“just like in the story” I thought, and I forced myself to keep moving forward. This was it. This was my one freaky, unexplainable thing, and then I would never look for this sort of trouble. It seems dumb, now, to think that way, doesn’t it?

Finally, after walking along what looked like a catwalk made of mountain, I saw a bland-colored sprite at the end, staring of into the distance. I mindlessly clicked A. It said nothing, just challenged me to a battle. What else was I expecting really.

“RED wants to battle!”

He sent out his first pokemon.

It was a Pikachu.

Aaaaaand I could not turn off my DS fast enough. I turned it off, closed the lid, dropped the DS on my bed and tore out of there, thundering down the hall. I never physically jumped or screamed, just took off. I calmed down, breathed a bit, and after a few minutes manned up and went to turn the game back on.

Everything was fine. The snow was still falling, but I was able to get my togechick and fly away. Nothing creepy happened after that. Infact, nothing creepy had happened at all.

I found out later that was the falling snow was added to the new version. Lame huh? I’d gotten all worked up over stuff that was supposed to happen anyway. I mean, I still haven’t beaten Red, because compared to me he is scary strong, but there’s nothing odd or creepy about it. And certainly nothing scary.

But the worst part—or maybe the best part?—was that nothing abnormal had actually happened. Which means it was all in my head. Which means this DIDN’T COUNT, so it’s still not out of my system.

I’m still trying to figure out whether that was for the best or not…
