“Nai-Kun! Can you do your big sissy a favor please?” Yuina sat at her vanity carefully removing the tangles from her long gray hair. I put down the fish I had just caught in the fridge and walked over to her. “Good, okay Nai-Nai, you know the little town we live next to? The one with all the Pokémon like us? Yes, good. I need you to go into that town and get us some food. We can only get some many things out here and I have a craving for chocolate!”
My eyes widened nervously. Into a town? Full of other people…? My nervousness must have shown on my face because Yuina continued. “Normally, Tesla or I would go, I know. But Tes hasn’t been feeling good lately and I’m lazy, so that leaves you my adorable, persuadable baby brother!” She smirked as only a ghost type could, creepily.
“…” The worry felt up inside me. What if someone sees me? Finds me? Catches me!? I was sure my cheeks paled, which would be why Yuina spoke again. “Oh it isn’t that hard, Naito. All you have to do is go by night and steal a few things. I didn’t teach you Shadow Sneak so you could be unhelpful to us.” I reluctantly agreed.
“Good! That’s my brilliant baby brother!” She ruffled my hair affectionately. I begrudgingly accepted her affection and shook my head once she finished. “Hehe, you’re too cute! Okay, we need this list of things.” She handed me an essay’s worth of things; I was horrified, until her tone softened. “It’s okay, you got this. You are my little brother after all.”
I threw my sister’s black cloak over my shoulders and headed out once the sun had begun to set. The village was quiet. It was almost nightfall so very few people were out, that made it easier to traverse without being seen. I crept along the streets, avoiding any light sources. If anyone saw me, they would surely think I was suspicious… My shoulders slumped at the thought. But I can’t get caught. I can’t! I can’t let them know we’re here… We’d surely be run out of town… maybe even with pitchforks and torches! I shuttered at the thought.
In the dying light, I saw a sign that read “Bakery” in fancy script. I sniffed the air. I could smell it. Sweets! Cakes, cookies, cupcakes, doughnuts and so much more! I knew my eyes were aglow with excitement. This had to be my first stop!
Changing my form to that of a shadow, I snuck under the door and rematerialized on the other side. The place glittered with many types of breads and sweets. Before anyone could stop me, I stuffed my pockets full of what I could, leaving no sweets behind. I was doing fine until I lightly tapped the shelf. It made a thunderous noise in the silence.
Someone came barreling down the stairs and coughed loudly to gain attention. “If anyone is there, I'm not s-scared!!!” In my panic, I stumbled over a container of bread, making more noise. No, no! D-don’t catch me!
The person screamed a little, also startled by my noise I assume, and flipped on the lights. “W-wh-WHO ARE YOU??” The pink haired man pointed a rolling pin at me. As he did, a small girl with yellow hair and an older woman ran down to join him. It’s over... this is the end for me...
The older woman snatched the rolling pin out of the man’s hand and put it on counter. “Hello dear, don’t be afraid... do you need something?” The remaining two bickered for a moment. I couldn’t take it, I backed away as slowly and cautiously as I could. Maybe I can make a run for it!
“Did you take something?” I froze. Everything stopped. I was terrified. This is why I don’t go out! “You can have it, don’t worry. Take what you need.”
I pauses. Breathing resumed but confusion set in. What? “... Th-thank you... m-ma'am...” I still had to get out of here.
The older woman held out her hand to me. “Don’t leave yet! Would you like to stay for dinner? What’s your name by the way?”
I could feel my face heating up. “I-I... I c-can't... I um...” My stomach betrayed me and I looked away. Finally I sighed and pulled down my hood. “N-Naito... m-my name is Naito m-ma'am...”
The old woman smiled brightly. “Naito? Ah Naito welcome! You can call me granny!!”
The blonde pointed at herself. “I'm Kiiro!!”
“..... Silca.” The remaining rolling-pin-pointing man commented.
Once again they invited me in, I cautiously covered my stomach and shook my head, declining their invite. I was hungry yes, but I couldn’t stop now. “I-it w-was g-good meeting y-you all... b-but I have t-to g-go…” Now that the moment was calm, I had to leave. This mission was important.
“Okay that’s perfectly fine don’t worry about it, we can keep this a secret from everyone too, please come by again!” I was surprised by how kind the strangers were and bided them another farewell before exiting the store like a normal person. Those people were strange... but... I'll have to come back and thank them again someday... I glanced down at the bread and sweets and smiled. I'm sure they'll like this~
***** Like two minutes of time passes! *****
I drifted around the town idly; I had to find something more to eat. My stomach cried out again. I wondered if Tesla and Yuina were waiting for me at home. The night air was chilly but still pleasant. The island usually had pleasant weather. Once again, my stomach grumbled. I knew I had bread and sweets in my side bags, but I couldn’t eat them until I got home. I groaned despairingly.
Without realizing it, I stumbled into a beautiful garden of flowers. My eyes lit up. I can eat flowers! I always ate the flowers on the trails we walked. They were always delicious too. I quickly gathered a handful of flowers and started munching on them. They were perfect! I stopped when I heard a noise.
Someone in the distance yawned. I hastily buried myself in the flowers, one still hanging out of my mouth, and searched for the source of the sound. I hope I don’t die… I could vaguely see a person through the brightly colored buds. The person spoke in a commanding tone. “Who's there?”
I tried to bury myself more. “No one…” The words slipped out of my lips quietly.
The man came toward me, towering over my hiding place. “What are you—” I looked up at him, scared for my life. “You..” He clenched fists and crouched down before me. This is where I die… The man’s voice was deadly calm. “You're eating my flowers. What...”
I was horrified and could only think to curl my hands over my chest like a puppy. “I-I... I! I-I-I... b-but f-f-flowers a-are f-f-food...” I have always eaten flowers.
“Don't look at me like that.” The man looked a little conflicted. “My flowers aren't food. My flowers are like my children. You just ate my child. How does that make you feel?”
I immediately spit out the flower and looked down at it. The crumpled little mess in my hands suddenly looked so sad. “I-I... I h-had no i-idea you w-were so i-important...” I mumbled to the heap. Feel beyond guilty, I dug a little hole to put the dead baby flower in then looked up at the no-doubt grieving father. “I-I... I'm s-so s-s-sorry s-sir... I-I...”
The man’s face slowly began to turn red. Is he still mad?? I was starting to get worried. “Oh, look... Look, it's... its okay... The man hastily stood up, running a hand through his beautiful white and green hair, then, after a moment, he offered a hand to me. “Look, it's whatever. Don't... don’t worry about it. Just... don't eat my flowers anymore... alright, uh... Uh, what's your name?”
I felt my face heat up as I stood and dusted himself off. “I-I'm r-r-really s-sorry I a-ate your c-children s-sir... I-I promise I w-won't do it again, s-sir!” Instinctively I covered my stomach. “M-my n-name is N-Naito... s-sir...”
He rubbed his nose for some strange reason. “Really, it's fine. I was just... They're not really my children, but they're important to me so...” He cleared throat. “Uh, thanks for the apology... And stop calling me 'sir.' It's Ryota. Just Ryota.”
“Y-yes R-Ryota s-sir... I-I m-mean R-Ryota... I-I um...” My face heated up even more so I looked at the flowers to change the subject. “Th-they're s-so b-beautiful... I-I just th-thought they m-might... b-be good t-to eat... I-I... I h-haven't had anything b-but f-fish in a-a long while...”
The man, Ryota, was tall, and relatively handsome, though he wasn’t a ghost. “That sounds disgusting. There's a diner in town, and I promise their food tastes better than my flowers. *pauses, blushes* If you're new to town, I could, uh... Show you the way?”
I got lost in thought and almost missed what he was saying, but I caught just enough to realize what he was saying. “I-I... uh... c-can't... I-I r-really s-should get b-back home... m-my sisters m-might get w-worried i-if I'm out t-too late... Th-thank you th-though... S-some... o-other time? B-besides... I-I have n-no m-money...”
Ryota’s face turned an even brighter shade of red, I was worried he might explode. He almost glowed in the dusk. “Uh, yeah. Yeah I can show you around some other time... I guess, I mean... Not like I owe you any favors, but...” I stared up at him and he looked away. “I mean, I guess, I'd be happy to...” I could only stare. He was a confusing person. “As for money, I can take care of it. No worries. Just don't mention it ever, to anyone, okay?”
I nodded. “I-I... I... um I... Th-thank you so m-much s-sir- Ryota... Th-thank you Ryota...” I looked up at him and smiled softly. This man was rather interesting, albeit he was a lot strange; he was funny too. “I-I w-would really l-like that...”
He turned every shade of red that that point and slapped his hand over his face suddenly, which started me. “Just... just go home to your sisters, alright?” He once again ran his fingers through his weirdly cut hair. “And I, uh, I guess I'll see you around, Nai.”
“I-it was n-nice meeting y-you! B-bye bye Ryota!” I hurried off into the woods. I heard Ryota call out something, but I couldn’t tell what it was. I’ll have to return there sometime! Ryota had really flowers there and I’m sure Tesla would love one! I chuckled. And that man is kind of funny! I need to tell sis about today! It was exciting! ♥
